Tre Jones (ankle), Jock Landale (concussion protocol) and Lonnie Walker won't be participating in tonight's Silver & Black scrimmage. Not sure why Lonnie is out.

I think he'll play a lot of wing, then have an opportunity to run the offense at times later in the season. His shot is really good, but what appeals most is that he plays under control and has nice court vision. He was spotting guys on the drive.

So is Eubank's jumper going to be a thing? He humble bragged about how hard he worked on it with Chip. And sure his footwork looks bad with such an awkwardly wide stance, but damn if he isn't looking like Jack Sikma out there raining jumpers. One game, and I wasn't watching closely, but I'm intrigued.

I see no reason why he shouldn't take those shots. We don't seem to have improved much in 3-point shooting, so if Drew can at least pretend to be a threat from out there, great.

Drew is a blue collar, gritty kind of player. Luka seemed entitled with all his God-given.

But Poeltl must be feeling the heat with Drew improving every year. Drew now has outside shots, and continuing rmto improve. Drew is cementing that backup C position.

Good scrimmage to watch..Joshua Primo is making all of us doubters eat crow. Kid looks natural and smooth. White seems to be slowly rounding into rhythm ..his playmaking is still good...his shooting and scoring in the paint is coming along slowly. Dejounte Murray's jumper looks much better. Vassell is also showing a lot of good touch on midrangers plus his uber attentive help defense is still preternatural. Poeltl's involvement as a playmaker on offense is encouraging but his free throw shooting is still very bad. Eubanks seems a keeper while wieskamp is not a total bust. McDermott had an off night ...Bates-Diop works well within the system but his shooting mechanics seem off.

This is a big year for Lonnie.

We'll know a lot more about what their plans for Lonnie are in a few days because they have until the 18th to give him an extension. It's been very quiet so far but if they can extend him to some figure smaller than his cap hold next summer ($13 mil), they'll probably do it.

Not really. Coach nate put him in a limited role. I do think nate will do well recruiting moving forward.

He was the best player on the team. But coach nate wanted to keep herb jones more involved and put the ball in his hands alot.

Primo, being a team player, played within the confines of his defined role and deferred to the players with seniority.

Theres only one player from last years team still there who might make it in the nba. Quinerly (transfer from villanova). Would be a longshot. He can get in the lane at will but I dont know if he can finish at the nba level.

If he were to sit out, that would probably have the opposite effect of what he would hope for.

I think they’ll offer him what they should, $8-9M/yr, he’ll decline, and he’ll be restricted next summer, like Kyle. His analytics are horrible, so he probably won’t get any large offers.

10-14-2021, 11:43 AM
Even Michael Jordan had to blend in at UNC because he had great players around him.

Primo is obviously no MJ (no one is) but it looks like blending in at Alabama may be to our benefit drafting 12 and getting him. Sometimes it works to your benefit.

I'll have to check out the scrimmage to see what he's doing.

Primo looks like a 12 YO kid. The Spurs may not have a great record this year and there will be some ugly games and stretches of games. But just going down a different path will be more interesting than the last year or two.

Nice. Yeah, I don't see what he's supposed to learn in the G-League. He obviously has a lot to learn, plus skills that need to be improved (ball handling is a big one), but I just don't see what playing with lesser competition is going to do for him.

It gets him playing time. He played well in some preseason games, and a scrimmage, but he’s not bumping ant of our more experienced guards/wings out of the rotation. He’d be reduced to PT scraps, and that’s not what he needs to develop. The only place he gets serious burn is in Austin.

The Truth #6

Let him dominate in G League, hopefully, for a month, and see where we’re at. They’re still figuring out Lonnie and maybe even Tre. And soon enough Primo can get quality minutes in San Antonio.

Which should happen often, this team sucks and the 12th pick is going to be in the G League? I can see if this was a playoff team but it's not. I honestly think Pop will have him by his side this season, I think it's beneficial for him to be going on these road trips and be with the team building relationships, be in the locker room, huddles, all of that. He needs to be with this team plain and simple.

While I get what you mean, my Spurs fan side wants to just shove all the experts on Draft night who gave us F grade (admittedly I’m one of them :lol). I don’t doubt Primo feels he belong and seems to relish the spotlight

Kawhi Leonard couldn't do jack shit his rookie year, besides defense and shoot a corner three and was on a playoff team and didn't play a game in the G League, and he turned out alright. Dude could barley dribble and we're talking about Primo going to the G League to work on his handles and passing lmao. This team sucks I am sure he kills these players in practice tbh, there's no reason for him to be in the GL.

Definitely not PATFOs style to throw the new kid to the wolves but one thing that's interesting is that with whites injury prone glass slippers (and I love white) it might be in the coaches back mind to fast track primo just in case.

Especially with Tre coming off some issues too, how are you going to feel if white gets hurt and you've had primo toiling in kindergarten instead of potentially getting him ready to jump in.

Obviously depends on primo and pre season 3rd stringers and scrimmage level effort is a far cry from real NBA action.

We may very well see primo hit the wall and this is not even a discussion soon enough.

if primo takes the route that KJ did in the G-League, I'm okay with it. He can work on ball-handling/play making and other areas of deficiency and then work his way back to the roster. Again, I'd be okay with it as long as it wasn't for too long a stretch of time.

I think he will get a little bit of both spending some time in G League will get him major minutes and he can work on things he needs to. I think if Vassell had went to G League last year he would be a much better player but it is what it is. I do think that it’s almost a given that White will miss games and he will have to be brought up and given good minutes. One thing to look out for us when he hits that Rookie wall he will definitely hit.

But one thing for sure is that he is now the best Spurs player and is definitely a corner stone for us going into the future. It will be interesting to see how he fits in and if Pop is going to give him the Green light to shooting or will he have a quick chain on him in making any type of mistakes. Just curious what position do you all see him playing more of PG or SG or SF in his future?

Primo needs to get some time on the floor in the NBA. He will obviously spend time in Austin, but I'm hoping Pop sees something in him and gives him the Tony Parker treatment - tough love, but a lot of opportunity. Obviously not a starting gig, but at least a chance to play real minutes.

Chomag
10-15-2021, 08:25 AM
First, You don't put a lottery pick in G League that's just silly. You especially don't if your not even a playoff team when the goal is to get better. Since your not contending for anything the best thing is to let your future gain experience and learn against NBA level talent which he would lack just playing in the G league.

I agree that he would get more PT but would all of that PT really be a benefit versus going up against NBA level talent?
