Super fun game to watch but I definitely don’t take this win too seriously. LMAO.

we beat down a bad team who had a ton of injuries.

I did love the pace, defensive intensity, and how a lot of the game they played a very pretty motion offense. Fun fun game to watch.

It just took Forbes in Milwaukee and Coach Bud showing Pop how to use him that made a big difference.

If the guy isn't shooting well, then there's no need to start him and let him average 25 minutes a game.

It's been years since the Spurs have had a legit garbage-time unit. Back in the M3 era, they had really good deep benches due to having signed so many young bench pieces to long-term deals and being willing to develop them. They have that again. Don't love Thad being out of the rotation at all. But Bates-Diop showed he deserves to be in it. Gotta reward guys who are scrapping.

Even if we totally suck ass, the games will still be more fun than anything we saw in the last couple of years and we can then just add ANOTHER good young player in the next draft.

We should have started this project two years ago.

IMO, they wouldn’t be as sharp as they are now without the vets they had over the past two years. You give and take. Otherwise, you’ll look like the Rockets right now who have a bunch of young guys who can’t execute worth a lick.

Good statement follow up game against the Magic.

You can tell the coaching staff identified the key issues regarding why they lost to them in preseaon.

Poeltl was very aggressive I want to say 1/4 of the way into the 1st and really set the tempo for the game with his performance dominating the offensive glass, his defense and court awareness.

Murray was up and down in certain areas throughout but a constant bumble of energy throughout

Keldon had some minor hiccups on defense but was bully driving into the paint and made some key mid range jumpers coming around screen. One looked like set play after a timeout which was nice.

White was a little cold at the start but after the 1st quarter really warmed up and solidified his presence with the lineups out there with heady plays driving, shooting and rotating on defense.

McDermott was a little sloopy during moments but he was very aggressive throughout and his overall movement with and without the ball just opens things up for everyone on the court. He really is the glue guy when he gets going and opens everyone elses game.

Eubanks had some fumbles with passes thrown his way, but I don't think those were his fault entirely a lot of those looks thrown his way were forced, thrown too low and too high for him to grasp. Overall he had an average game but his energy really kept the momentum going.

Forbes had a off night shooting and although he struggled moments on defense he did have a few plays on that end that disrupted the Magic from gaining rhythm. He got benched after the 1st half and that was well and good.

Lonnie didn't get going until the 2nd half I felt. He showed some awareness for teammates but often times a bit late. His relentlessness in not giving up on his shot was encouraging and began seeing them drop. His penetration as I mentioned throughout the game is annoying to watch for me personally because he just telegraphs "The path of least contact" an average defender just has to recognize this and not leave his feet right away and can force Walker into a bad shot at the rim. Other than that he put commenable effort on defense.

Vassell was the other notable mention player next to Poeltl that wins the Spurs this game with his defense and midrange game he showed in Summer League. Those 3 pt shots really just pour energy into his teammates and really got them going.

Had a KBD sigthing and he is had his moments is an excellent end of the bench reserve that really allows you to not be too concerned about pulling your starters and heavy rotation players early with a lead.

Landale with his passing and BBIQ has the potential after 15 games to take Eubanks Minutes.

Tre Jones really look good out there with his first minutes of the season. Finding minutes for him is going to be tricky but it's a good problem to have and one you can appreciate having when other guys are having off nights from the bench.

Primo really looks promising.

The Lakers are trash. Don’t believe the media hype. Yes they have LeBron and AD, but they also play Melo, Westbrook and Rondo. Their spacing is garbage. Go zone and run them off the floor. They the oldest team in the league and don’t have enough shooting

Random Thoughts:

First half: A barrage of Wagner brothers complaining about foul calls. Not to be outdone, Lopez gets in on the action. DJ looked way less calm and poised compared to the preseason. Lonnie looked to have some positive energy/motivation/mojo. McBuckets may need to play 40 minutes to help with spacing.

Second half: Defense was impressive. Vassel looked better and better. Enjoy the victories when they come. But with some extra cohesion the defense should keep us in a lot of games. Great comraderie if not exactly great chemistry yet. I'll admit it's probably good Luka is off the team. Despite my gripes with his overall development and the process, I love how well everyone gets along and his flat affect would possibly drag the team down.

Devin Vassell . looks like he's taken his game to another level this season. His three and midrange game was deadly and was all over his man on D..

Good first win. Didnt let up in the 4th . Liked the fact the 3rd unit came in to seal the deal.

Everybody did well and it’s hard to choose who was the top performer tonight. Poeltl was a beast and rebounded like a madman. Dejounte did his thing defensively, and Vassell mirrored him there too. Lonnie provided a nice spark. Keldon was physical and scored in a myriad of ways.

I’ve got to agree with this, even though missing the playoffs again would surely frustrate guys like Murray, White, Poetl and even Keldon all of whom have had a taste of the playoffs before or Olympic competition and want to succeed sooner than later. Nevertheless, for us, it’s a good season to see these kids develop without DeRozan.

I'm with timvp that if the Spurs don't have any interest in figuring it out Thad should've been gone by now. That second unit would've shined with last year's Young playing instead of Eubanks -- and I like Drew and thought he played fine tonight.

I see where you're going with this, but McDermott is already here in that role. I also don't think the rotation could support a fourth bottom-of-the-barrel defender.

That was an exciting game. The players loved it. They had a swagger to them sitting on the sideline in the 4th.

I know the magic suck. That's a given.

But if all young guys take a step forward (which seems to be the case)and you subtract DeRozan and aldridge ( net negatives who destroy spacing and were atrocious on defense) who's to say they cant squeak into the playoffs.

This is going to be a fun season to watch. The defense was swarming and everyone was competing and operating on the same page.

If Derrick stays healthy and confident, devin takes a big step forward and tre jones plays well enough to surpass forbes in the rotation - this trifecta might get them to the playoffs barring major injuries.

Slippy

Pretty sure he was iced after missing a rotation on a PnR play the magic ran. They got a easy score as a result.. The misses didnt help his cause im sure.

The adjustment for the game however was pop leaving him glued to the bench in the second half. Lonnie and Devin as first subs feasted in that half and we saw the separation the team needed.

I seriously never felt this way after a win the last 2 years. Last year even after a big win we knew what we had in our team. This year, no idea. Untapped potential.

Why are you making up stupid scenarios?

You're the one who said:

There's probably not been the right trade yet.

That only has two extensions:

1) The Spurs haven't traded Young because they haven't found an offer for which they'd trade Young -- This is obvious to the point of almost being tautological.

2) The Spurs might have found a trade they like but still haven't made it for some reason -- This is the scenario I was asking about, because if they found a trade for him they like but haven't traded him yet, that would be hard to defend. Yet you proposed it like it would make sense. Hence me asking you if you'd truly defend a situation where the Spurs have a trade for Young they think is good but are still sitting on their hands right now. I don't consider that a remotely likely scenario, especially considering they haven't officially shut Young down like they did with LMA. But you brought it up, so I thought I'd ask.

Number 2) is so stupid I can't even. Here's my scenario: you walk into the cafeteria at work and immediate shit yourself. I mean, no one can imagine how much shit comes out of your body. Even the ladies scooping green beans onto plates can smell it and the shit is running out your pant legs. What do you do? Defend why you just shit yourself for some reason.

Checking on DeRozan, I see that he hit a 3 in the first game of the regular season with 3 steals to boot! On a more familiar note, he turned the ball over with 2 minutes left to play and missed a shot with a minute left to play in a close game lol.

Portal was good bur he was late on a couple of defensive rotations, allowing Orlando to hit a couple of 3s , not sure why he hesitated

Fun game ... nice home crowd energy ... 1 of the 3 wins I pencilled in for the first 10 games! Game ball goes to Devin Vassell ...

I seriously never felt this way after a win the last 2 years. Last year even after a big win we knew what we had in our team. This year, no idea. Untapped potential.

even if lose the next 4, at least today was fun lol

but with that said, Spurs will shock some people!

That, my friend, is called hope. I was telling my buddies the exact same thing. I haven’t get this easy since the last time nephew was still playing for us.

Checking on DeRozan, I see that he hit a 3 in the first game of the regular season with 3 steals to boot! On a more familiar note, he turned the ball over with 2 minutes left to play and missed a shot with a minute left to play in a close game lol.

He started last season hitting 3s too. He got everyone hope up by matching total 3s in first few games as the previous season. Then for some reason he just stop shooting 3s

Magic might be the worst team in the nba with all these injuries. But we played some nice ball.

Not sure how other team guards would feel playing against us, we can throw TJ, DjM, DW and DV against them. Pop can even unsettle them by rotating the player defending them so that they are not able to get use to the defenders. Even KJ, LW and Primo are quite good on 1 on 1 D.

Oh, you're a poop joke person...

gotta say, i didnt expect this big of a win. Now if only these players would stay consistent and play like this most of the time.

This game was fun as hell to watch. I loved the energy the players showed out there on the court. If this is what I can expect to see night in and night out from them, then win or lose, I will be a happy man.

I think the best chances for this team to win some games is to wear the other teams down by running players in and out in waves. We have a lot of players on the bench like Drew, Diop, Jones, (and maybe Keldon and/or Devin depending on who starts) who can play a running game with some pressing defense) Exploit our youthful stamina, athleticism, and team speed, and other teams will grow a half step slower by the third quarter. Perhaps that accounts for our pulling away in the second half in this game. It looks like Lonnie and Murray have sorta learned how to make layups.

We have a lot of players who can run and gun, playing fast break basketball out of defensive breaks and motion offense. It could be a very entertaining team to watch, even without All Star caliber players this year.

Might've meant Leonard, but I guess that would still make sense.

That’s his achilles heel. If only he continues to attempt, even if he misses, just as long as he makes the defender honest. But as the 2nd or 3rd option of that team, I think he can feel more relaxed to make mistakes and shoot them 3’s. It’s more difficult when you’re the 1st option and you’re too tight not to make mistakes, eventually limiting his game. That’s what TD allowed Manu, TP, Kawhi to grow. Bruce could just be Bruce and not play outside of his character. Unlike last coupke of years when we saw Patty playing PG, Bryn starting.

Anyway, I’m glad for Demar. He was a good soldier, never really complained during his stay here. Pop helped him expand his game, played him and the vets to earn their next contract. And Demar paid back agreeing to the S&T that got u some assets. I wish him well.

Thanks man for the thoughts.
One thing that can’t be understated is how much this team seem to genuinely celebrate each other and their accomplishments on the court.

They're glad the dead weight is gone

Pop didn't help him expand his game... He was a good passer since he was in Toronto... It's just that Lowry was the primary ballhandler... Here he was, so his assists increased...

Wrong again :lol Lowrys USG was nowhere near Demars. DD was the primary ball handler for those Toronto teams. The numbers back that up

I am not too sure about DDR giving back by agreeing to S&T. Not many teams have the cap to sign him as a free agent, at least not bulls.
