3 arrested, firearm recovered from Walnut Creek Nordstrom store looting involving 80 people: Police
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- New video shows a large police presence in Walnut Creek Saturday night, where witnesses say about 80 looters targeted Nordstrom.
The incident was first reported at 8:46 p.m. while the store was still open, according to police.
Two employees were assaulted and one was pepper sprayed by the suspects, Walnut Creek place said.
Officers arrested two people, one of whom was in possession of a firearm. A third person was arrested nearby a short time later in possession of stolen Nordstrom property, police added.
A manager at a nearby restaurant says his stunned customers just watched as the thieves grabbed merchandise, loaded it in waiting cars and drove off.
That manager described the chaos.
"We probably saw 50 to 80 people in ski masks crowbars a bunch of weapons. They were looting the Nordstrom's right here. And I thought they were going to start beating cars. I had to start locking doors lock the front door lock the back door," PF Chang's manager Brett Barrette said.
A BMW convertible was stopped by police - believed to be somehow connected with the mayhem there.

In fundraising pitches, the Trump campaign made monthly recurring payments the default in multiple online drives.
Some supporters of Donald Trump had a rude awakening after realizing they were donating more money than they intended to the former president’s failed reelection campaign.
The Trump campaign had been deceptively making supporters file for recurring donations rather than one-time payments, according to a report in the New York Times.

Someone rolled up on the son and shot him 8 times. The mom says he wasn't gangbanging. She is then targeted at his service.

$25,000 in luxury purses stolen in latest 'grab and go' theft in California: What to know
Five people rushed into a Nordstrom store in Southern California the night before Thanksgiving and fled with several purses, the latest incident in a string of grab-and-go thefts and organized robberies plaguing luxury stores.
Los Angeles police said a security guard was sprayed with an irritant meant to deter charging bears at the Westfield Topanga & The Village shopping center in Canoga Park. The stolen bags were estimated to be worth $25,000, local media reported.
The LAPD was also investigating a similar incident in which groups entered several stores in the Beverly Center on Wednesday, grabbed merchandise and ran out. And on Monday, about 20 people took roughly $5,000 of merchandise from a Nordstrom store at Grove mall.
Police have described the incidents as "flash mob thefts," and they've been happening in several other cities across California.
In the San Francisco Bay area last week, more than 80 people stormed another Nordstrom armed with crowbars. Donning ski masks, the mob ran off with thousands of dollars of merchandise. Three people were arrested.

Ah. I wondered where you were going with this. Crime is an unusually bad problem in the sense that sensitivity to especially brazen crimes is cranked up high. That is a reaction that happens upon discovery whether or not media/social conflates/inflates these events.

At least 12 major U.S. cities have broken annual homicide records (https://abcnews.go.com/US/gunviolence/) in 2021 -- and there's still three weeks to go in the year.
Of the dozen cities that have already surpassed the grim milestones for killings, five topped records that were set or tied just last year.

"It's terrible to every morning get up and have to go look at the numbers and then look at the news and see the stories. It's just crazy. It's just crazy and this needs to stop," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said after his city surpassed its annual homicide record of 500, which stood since 1990.
Philadelphia, a city of roughly 1.5 million people, has had more homicides this year (521 as of Dec. 6) than the nation's two largest cities, New York (443 as of Dec. 5) and Los Angeles (352 as of Nov. 27). That's an increase of 13% from 2020, a year that nearly broke the 1990 record.

12 U.S. CITIES THAT HAVE BROKEN ANNUAL HOMICIDE RECORDS
Chicago, the nation's third-largest city, leads the nation with 739 homicides as of the end of November, up 3% from 2020, according to Chicago Police Department crime data. Chicago's deadliest year remains 1970 when there were 974 homicides.
Philadelphia's homicide record was broken in the same week that Columbus, Indianapolis and Louisville eclipsed records for slayings.
Experts say there are a number of reasons possibly connected to the jump in homicides, including strained law enforcement staffing, a pronounced decline in arrests and continuing hardships from the pandemic, but that there is no clear answer across the board.
5 cities surpass records set in 2020Other major cities that have surpassed yearly homicide records are St. Paul, Minnesota; Portland, Oregon; Tucson, Arizona; Toledo, Ohio; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Austin, Texas; Rochester, New York; and Albuquerque, New Mexico, which broke its record back in August.

"The community has to get fed up," Capt. Frank Umbrino, of the Rochester Police Department, said at a news conference after the city of just over 200,000 people broke its 30-year-old record on Nov. 11. "We're extremely frustrated. It has to stop. I mean, it's worse than a war zone around here lately."
Indianapolis, Columbus, Louisville, Toledo and Baton Rouge broke records set in 2020, while St. Paul surpassed a record set in 1992.
Among the major cities on the brink of setting new homicide records are Milwaukee, which has 178 homicides, 12 short of a record set in 2020; and Minneapolis, which has 91 homicides, six shy of a record set in 1995.
According to the FBI's annual Uniform Crime Report (https://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/fbi-releases-2020-crime-statistics) released in September, the nation saw a 30% increase in murder in 2020, the largest single-year jump since the bureau began recording crime statistics 60 years ago.
'Nobody's getting arrested'Robert Boyce, retired chief of detectives for the New York Police Department and an ABC News contributor, said that while there is no single reason for the jump in slayings, one national crime statistic stands out to him.
“Nobody’s getting arrested anymore," Boyce said. "People are getting picked up for gun possession and they're just let out over and over again."
The FBI crime data shows that the number of arrests nationwide plummeted 24% in 2020, from the more than 10 million arrests made in 2019. The number of 2020 arrests -- 7.63 million -- is the lowest in 25 years, according to the data. FBI crime data is not yet available for 2021.

Christopher Herrmann, an assistant professor in the Department of Law & Police Science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, said the decrease in arrests could be attributed to the large number of police officers who retired or resigned in 2020 and 2021.

A workforce survey released in June by the Police Executive Research Forum (https://www.policeforum.org/workforcesurveyjune2021) found the retirement rate in police departments nationwide jumped 45% over 2020 and 2021. And another 18% of officers resigned, the survey found, a development which coincided with nationwide social justice protests and calls to defund law enforcement agencies following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
On average, the survey found that law enforcement agencies are currently filling only 93% of the authorized number of positions available and Herrmann said many departments have been hampered in hiring because of an inability to get large classes into police academies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think, unfortunately, police departments are just losing a lot of their best and experienced officers and then because of the economic crisis, because of COVID, are having difficulties in hiring or just delays in hirings," Herrmann said.
Herrmann said he suspects that a confluence of other factors has also contributed to the spike in lethal violence over the last two years. He said the COVID-19 pandemic not only prompted a shutdown of courts and reduction in jail population to slow the spread of the virus but also derailed after-school programs and violence disruption programs.
Confluence of factors"I wish there was one good solid reason that I could give you for the increases, but the reality is there is none," Herrmann, a former crime analyst supervisor for the New York City Police Department, told ABC News.
Herrmann said he was surprised to see the number of homicides going up in major cities across the United States after an overall 30% jump last year.

“I knew 2020 was going to be a bad year because of the (COVID-19) pandemic but I really thought that a lot of these numbers would come down in 2021 just because a lot of society reopened and reopened pretty quickly," Herrmann said. “We don’t have the unemployment problem, we don’t have a lot of the economic stresses, housing and food insecurities aren't as much of an issue. A lot of those things were leading to the mental health stressors that were plaguing the country."
As part of a recent ABC News series "Rethinking Gun Violence," (https://abcnews.go.com/US/experts-gun-violence-rose-2020-amid-pandemic-lockdowns/story?id=80466932) Dr. Daniel Webster, the director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, said 2020 was the "perfect storm" of conditions where "everything bad happened at the same time -- you had the COVID outbreak, huge economic disruption, people were scared."

Chief LeRonne Armstrong of the Oakland, California, Police Department told ABC News recently that the lack of resources to fight crime is one of the reasons he suspects is why his city is seeing the highest number of homicides in decades. Oakland police have investigated at least 127 homicides in 2021, up from 102 in all of 2020. The Bay Area city's all-time high for homicides is 175 set in 1992.
Armstrong said his department's 676 officers is the smallest staff his agency has had in years, nearly 70 fewer officers than in 2020.
"To have 70, nearly 70 less officers a year later," Armstrong said, "is definitely going to have an impact on our ability to address public safety."

If they're refusing to make arrests because getting criticized for violent abuse and murder hurt their feelings, hiring more cops won't do shit.

I wasn't aware that there was a suppressed arrest rate at this time. From what I read in the article I don't think it's because the police don't want to arrest, I think it's because once an arrest has been made there appears to be little action. As I said I haven't really kept up with arrest rates or anything of that nature and this was kind of the first I've heard of it. But I do find it telling that there may be some kind of correlation between a lower rate and police retiring or quitting out of frustration if that's indeed the case.

Great find, Snake.
Snake
You could ask your real estate agent, “Is this a good neighborhood?” But don't expect a straight answer.
Your agent isn't purposely giving you the run-around. Certain details about a neighborhood or community can violate the Fair Housing Act, which was enacted in 1968 to eliminate housing discrimination. The law protects against discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or family status. In particular, it prohibits any real estate professional from steering prospective homebuyers or renters toward or away from a community based on any of the classes under federal protection.
Removing crime stats may or may not have anything to do with the fair housing act, but crime isn't exclusive to certain demographics. For example, if I was looking at buying a home in Westlake, I don't need to look at crime stats. The housing prices and the actual neighborhood tells me enough. Even if I was moving across country to NY, I'd not need to know crime stats to know which neighborhoods are safer than others. It's readily apparent in the upkeep.

once through quickly. I found it underwhelming, plus it panders to a preexisting narrative and a manufactured moral panic.
What impressed you?
What isn't a manufactured moral panic these days?
There's a giant contingency of the youth today that seems to work hardest at fabricating elaborate facades that paint them to be victims in almost every imaginable way. There are hundreds of thousands of young youth today, completely ignoring their first world privilege, crying about self-indulged issues that make them victims. Too many to name to go down the rabbit hole.
I'm the first to say it's a two-sided street/coin, etc. in this regard, but you're dismissal of Teysha, one of the few genuine posters here, as you once were, is just a byproduct of the biases you've put on display recently as you try and combat the same 1-2 people who trigger you.
We have "moral panics" about EVERYTHING in this society and a lot of those manufactured, moral panics are backed by today's youth on both sides of the coin.
You're advocating that cat shit smells better than dog shit. Not that that comparison doesn't hold true to this entire board, but it's a giant glare coming off the top of someone like you- seemed like an objective poster. RGItis as it is known from here on.

You don't have to hide some things, you can flat out eliminate the obstacles that make the truth less hurtful to the tribalists.
Case in point, California, the richest state in the nation, again, bragged about the surplus of billions in tax revenues while addressing the fact that California completely refuses to return public education budgets to 2009 budgets, even with inflation to consider. California has a bottom 5 public education and hasn't resumed music or similar creative arts to most school budgets and has an abysmal and unacceptable graduation rate, but have no problem adding to the curriculum things that have zero consensus science to back them such as their takes on gender and cross dressing, social commentary moreso than proven science and fact.
So, how do they address their inexcusable public education while they hoard and brag about the riches they've drained from a suffering general public? Remove Ds and Fs from their grading scale and now are allowing, in some instances, endless retakes of Finals and major exams they don't pass, just so they can pass these unprepared students as to not look as the statistics prove. The excuse? Students are taught to learn the curriculum but "most students test poorly and testing isn't the best way to gauge how a student comprehended the subject matter". And the question these same educational "Experts" completely ignore, dodge or refuse to answer is, "how do you measure how well a student has absorbed and mastered the subject material if they aren't tested?".
1st world privilege ignores the obvious and enables the stupid, weak and selectively incapable to continue a selective narrative in the name of "feelings". We live in sad times in a society incapable of addressing the objective issues plaguing us.

As for objectivity, there is no value-neutral perspective. Pretending there is effectively hides bias.
Fwiw, I don't think I brushed Teysha off, I replied to his post and showed appreciation for his response to my reply. We just don't agree, is all.

Beaumont and Lubbock are as dangerous as East Chicago on this list.
Washington DC is #80.
NYC isn't in the top 100 most dangerous cities, and neither is San Francisco.

Chicago has a problem with lying cops.
The state’s attorney’s office in July made public its list of officers in Cook County who it has barred from testifying in criminal cases — more than 300 officers in all, the vast majority of them from the Chicago Police Department. About 60 officers were added this year, and the office adopted a new policy last month that spells out prosecutors’ duty to disclose its problematic witnesses to defendants.https://www.propublica.org/article/chicago-officer-kriv-perjury-prosecutors-dropped-criminal-cases

The collapse of Kriv’s cases shares some similarities with the problematic DUI arrests made by Chicago police officer John Haleas nearly 20 years ago. Even after the police administration confirmed that Haleas had falsified reports in DUI arrests, he remained on duty. (In fact, he is still a Chicago police officer, though he was later convicted of attempted obstruction of justice and the department tried to fire him.)

You can't be in there after dark. We went to see a Norman Rockwell exhibit and were told that repeatedly as we spent the day there in Philadelphia.
