They were last until last week. But Houston has overtaken them. Bulls no 1. Discuss.

The only one concerned about free throws in this forum is me. Nary a word about how this is costing us games from posters here. We don’t get to the line and when we do we suck at shooting them. I’m glad Chip is earning his keep. There’s another dude that needs to gtfo

Is this a huge dip? How were we in FT percentage last year? (Don't remember).

Johnson has been bad at the line

We had terrible FT % during most of Tim Duncan’s career…because of Duncan. Doesn’t mean anything at all.

Lack of 3s & free throws are killing our efficiency. For as well as Murray has played this year, he's been fairly inefficient as he does neither of those things.

Here’s a player comparison. Some players have shot very few, of course. Beware of small samples.

FT percentage last season / this year so far.

Murray .791/.686
Keldon .740/.692
Devin .843/.727
Derrick .851/.793
Lonnie .814/.808
Eubanks .726/.765
Forbes .770/.667
Jones .895/1.000 (3 for 3)
McDermott .816/.667
Young .628/.357
Diop .667/1.000 (4 for 4)
Poeltl .508/.333

Basically, every Spurs player who gets much court time is starting out worse than he was last year. Except Eubanks, of all things.

Wow! Down across the board. Thanks for suppying that! I read somewhere that when player's are tired their FT percentage can dip (not sure if that is true), so maybe the greater playing time is playing havoc with their free throws. But Pop doesn't let anyone get anywhere close to exhaustion, so likely that is not the case.

Hopefully things revert to the mean.

We had terrible FT % during most of Tim Duncan’s career…because of Duncan. Doesn’t mean anything at all.

Different situations. Obviously, we don’t have Duncan now to ameliorate all our deficiencies. We need every single bit of help to win any close game now.

You read that when players are tired their FT % can dip? Have you ever played ball?

I am pretty sure in 14 we were #1 in free throw percentage. In fact, Tony and Manu had several interviews stating how that was a goal of theirs. Free throws win games. Getting to the line and making them is the difference between a loss and a win.

We start each game on average of 2-6 points down vs pretty much every team besides Denver. Then you add another 3-15 points from our lack of 3 point shooting and there is several victories right there. Hell our offense is ranked in the 20s. Small things like this add to wins

Best post in this thread.

our % sucks because we don’t take a lot and the guys that do take them aren’t hitting them but this is what you get with a bunch of young players and middling vets

The point being good FT% =/= good team (last two years) and bad FT% =/= bad team (Big 3Era). It’s a fairly meaningless stat, but I guess it’s something else for ST to pick at and bitch about.

It’s the opposite of meaningless and if you can’t see that then idk what to tell you. Sure when you have a top 8 player of all time then we can survive off shooting bad free throws. But I looked it up and from 2003-on in the big 3 era we were never this bad percentage wise. But we have zero superstars so our margin for error is very small if we want to win. We go into every game basically down by atleast 2 points bc of free throws. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker. Yeah those guys could make those points up. But Derrick White, DJ and KJ? Yeah those guys can’t. Then you add in we go into every game down 3-15 points from us not making 3s. Those turn winnable games, like the Lakers game, into losses.

Btw if we could’ve shot free throws well in the playoffs then we probably 4peat. We won in 03. If we don’t go 9 for 17 in the .4 game we win that game and the series, we won in 05. And if Bruce fucking Bowen knew how to make a free throw he wouldn’t have been hacked and basically unplayable down the stretch. Never mind game 6 in 2013. Point is that free throws win games and series.

Yep. I was on my high school basketball team. Not that I have any clue what it is like for a pro.

Except when it does. See #6.

More FTs would be nice. Not the same thing we’re discussing. See the thread title. Spurs had plenty of FTs when Duncan was clanking them. The % was just low. We also had plenty of FTs last year when DeRozan was railing them. We won with Duncan, and lost with DeRozan. FREE THROW PERCENTAGE DOESN’T CORROLATE WITH WINNING OR LOSING. ITS NOT IMPORTANT TO THE TEAM.
