No, the point is that we're sending them to Ukraine entirely at our expense... an expense that could better be spent here. We have to buy many more as a result of giving them away.

Which is incredibly cheap considering we would still need to send them, alongside warships, planes, troops, etc if we need to even monitor the borders should Russia take over Ukraine. There’s simply no more buffer zones against our bases in Europe.
And don’t even get me started on the economics of this. We might actually be a net positive in this conflict so far. We’ve sent Ukraine a grand total of $64 billion in aid, we’re projected to increase our GDP by $1.3 trillion in LNG exports alone (https://press.spglobal.com/2024-12-17-Expected-Growth-of-U-S-LNG-Exports-to-Support-Nearly-500,000-Jobs-Annually-and-Add-1-3-Trillion-to-United-States-Gross-Domestic-Product-Through-2040,-New-S-P-Global-Study-Finds).
And that doesn’t even take into account collateral like getting Iran and Russia out of Syria, basically for free.

There are obviously events that could happen and derail this, like, say, China invading Taiwan. But as things stand right now this is probably the best spent money in our defense budget, by a long mile.

We have a problem now. $1 Trillion on Interest Expense and $900 Billion on military. If you don't see a problem then you'll have to find out the long and hard way if we don't fix it.

I mean, our GDP is nearly $30 trillion and all inflation has done is liquidate some of that debt.
But I do agree we need to cut expenses, including defense, specifically in wasteful areas with doubtful benefits. Do we need to spend over $1 trillion in just F-35s? I think that’s excessive. Do we need another DOD department in Space Force? I don’t think we do.
If you ask me, TSA should be on the chopping block as well.

With Assad’s fall, Putin’s dream of world domination is turning into a nightmare

As Bashar al-Assad fell, Russian nationalist military bloggers turned on the Kremlin. “Ten years of our presence,” fumed the “Two Majors” Telegram channel to its more than one million subscribers, “dead Russian soldiers, billions of spent roubles and thousands of tonnes of ammunition, they must be compensated somehow.” Some didn’t shy away from lambasting Vladimir Putin. “The adventure in Syria, initiated by Putin personally, seems to be coming to an end. And it ends ignominiously, like all other ‘geopolitical’ endeavours of the Kremlin strategist.” These weren’t isolated incidents. Filter Labs, a data analytics company I collaborate with, saw social media sentiment on Syria dip steeply as Assad fell.

It was in stark contrast to Putin’s silly claim at his annual news conference last week that Russia had suffered no defeat in Syria. Unlike social media, legacy media tried to walk the Kremlin line, but even here there were splits. “You can bluff on the international arena for a while – but make sure you don’t fall for your own deceptions”, ran an op-ed in the broadsheet Kommersant, penned by a retired colonel close to the military leadership. He then used Syria as an example of how “in today’s world, victory is only possible in a quick and fleeting war. If you effectively win in a matter of days and weeks, but cannot quickly consolidate your success in military and political terms, you will eventually lose no matter what you do.” Though the piece didn’t mention Ukraine, Vasily Gatov, a media analyst at the University of Southern California, told me he thought it was a message from the general staff to the Kremlin: be realistic about what we can achieve in Ukraine, too.

Assad’s fall is not just a blow to Russia’s interests in the Middle East but to the essence of Putin’s power, which has always been about perception management. His early spin doctor Gleb Pavlovsky once explained to me how, when the Kremlin was weak domestically in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Russian leaders learned to dominate TV to create ersatz grandeur. The Kremlin couldn’t really control the regional governors at that point, but it could give the sense that the president ruled everything by being omnipresent in the media. Since then, Putin has taken perception management to the international stage, trying to tell a story that he is leading a new generation of authoritarian regimes destined to inherit the earth. But that image suddenly looks shaky. Now is the time to apply more pressure before he can patch things up and project his superpower movie once again.

Russia terrorizes Ukraine with mass missile, drone attack on Christmas morning

Russia launched a mass aerial attack against Ukraine on Dec. 25, targeting cities across the country with missiles and drones.

The northeastern city of Kharkiv was among the hardest hit, coming under "massive rocket fire" from ballistic missiles, according to local authorities. At least six people were injured.

Explosions were also reported in Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Kryvyi Rih, and the western city of Ivano-Frankivsk.

Multiple cities in Ukraine imposed emergency blackouts amid the attack.

It Took Nearly Two Years, But Large Numbers Of German-Made Leopard 1 Tanks Are Finally Arriving In Ukraine

It took German industry an eyebrow-raising 19 months to refurbish and deliver the first 58 of at least 155 Leopard 1A5 tanks a German-led consortium has pledged to Ukraine. But the three-country consortium—Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium—has apparently resolved parts shortages and is finally picking up the pace.

Since those first 58 Leopard 1A5s arrived through early September, an additional 45 of the 1980s-vintage tanks have shipped.

The delivery schedule matters. The four-person Leopard 1A5 is set to become the most numerous Western-made tank in Ukraine, outnumbering the 104 newer German-made Leopard 2s, 80 American-made M-1s and paltry 14 British-made Challenger 2s.

Moreover, the Ukrainian general staff has already assigned the Challenger 2s, M-1s and Leopard 2s to their respective brigades. The Leopard 1s are the only Western tanks that are available to equip the dozen or so new heavy brigades the Ukrainians have formed in recent months. A Ukrainian mechanized brigade typically has a single tank battalion with 31 tanks.

Russia-linked cable-cutting tanker seized by Finland ‘was loaded with spying equipment’

Eagle S, the Russia-linked tanker suspected of damaging an underwater electricity cable on Christmas Day, was kitted out with special transmitting and receiving devices that were used to monitor naval activity, according to a source with direct involvement in the ship, which has since been detained by Finnish police
FREE TO READ Finnish coastguard with Eagle S in background after suspected cable sabotage incident Source: Finnish Border Guard / X Finnish coastguard with Eagle S shown in the background after suspected cable sabotage incident.

RUSSIA-LINKED dark fleet* tanker Eagle S (IMO: 9329760), seized by Finland on December 25 for damaging an undersea cable, had transmitting and receiving devices installed that effectively allowed it to become a “spy ship” for Russia, Lloyd’s List has learnt.

The hi-tech equipment on board was abnormal for a merchant ship and consumed more power from the ship’s generator, leading to repeated blackouts, a source familiar with the vessel who provided commercial maritime services to it as recently as seven months ago.

Cook Islands tanker suspected of damaging Estlink 2 cable and possible other damage by police investigating aggravated vandalism on the undersea infrastructure

As well as Eagle S, another related tanker from the same ownership cluster, UK-sanctioned Swiftsea Rider (IMO: 9318539), also had similar equipment installed, Lloyd’s List was told.

Cook Islands-flagged Eagle S and Honduras-flagged Swiftsea Rider are two of 26 elderly Russia-linked tankers with opaque ownership structures connected to three related shipmanagers, including two sanctioned by the UK government 12 months ago for “propping up Putin’s war machine”.

Slovakia will continue supplying electricity to Ukraine despite threats from Fico, reports iRozhlas. State-owned SEPS, Slovakia's power grid operator, confirmed it will uphold its emergency assistance contract with Ukrenergo. (https://mstdn.social/@noelreports/113766335033174585)

OPINION: This year could spell the end of Slovakia’s Robert Fico government

...

The possibility of early elections in Slovakia was first publicly acknowledged by Fico himself during a speech at Smer party’s ceremonial congress on November 17 last year. “Let’s be realists and prepare ourselves for parliamentary elections outside the end of the regular term in 2027,” declared the Smer leader.

Since then, his warning has become increasingly realistic. Even some members of the ruling coalition openly admit the possibility of early elections. The year 2025 is seen as decisive, with the first major test coming during the first parliamentary session in February.

The ruling coalition currently has just 76 MPs, giving it a majority of only one in Slovakia’s 150-seat parliament. This wafer-thin advantage is the result of three rebellious MPs leaving the parliamentary group of the smallest coalition partner, SNS. Later, another three MPs, this time from the Hlas party, defected, leaving the coalition uncertain about whether it will still have a majority come next month’s parliamentary session.

According to public opinion polls, half of Slovaks expect Fico’s government to fall. Michal Šimečka, the leader of the opposition party, Progressive Slovakia, predicts that due to the government’s troubles and the coalition’s disintegration, early elections could take place in Slovakia this year or next. His party, which has been consistently leading Smer in the opinion polls for several months, is projected to emerge as the winner.

...

The confusing Moscow trip, which further tarnished Slovakia's reputation among its Western allies, offers another interpretation; Fico may be laying the groundwork for an election campaign in which Russia could play a role. This mirrors the recent Romanian scenario, where the constitutional court annulled the first round of presidential elections due to Russian interference.

Though this may sound speculative, Fico himself hinted that this might happen during his New Year’s speech. He criticized developments in Romania and Georgia, framing them as examples of election results being disregarded when the “wrong” candidate won. His comments seemed to foreshadow a similar narrative for Slovakia.

...

However, even early elections may not guarantee political change. A potential victory for Šimečka’s pro-European Progressive Slovakia party would not automatically mean it could form a stable government due to lack of coalition partners.

A new parliament would likely include the far-right Republika party and Aliancia, a party representing Slovakia’s Hungarian minority which aligns itself with the policies of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian prime minister, and these parties could become viable coalition partners for Smer. If joined by the Christian Democrats (KDH) and Hlas, a strong coalition with the potential to get a constitutional majority could emerge, paving the way for a transformation of Slovakia modeled on Orbán’s Hungary. But for now, Fico's government remains fragile, and all scenarios for Slovakia's future are still on the table.

it seems Trump is set to continue the US's quasi-Cold War footing with China, the main suspense is whether we'll see a Trump reversal on Russia/Ukraine

As part of its green transition, Norway has decided (https://www.nrk.no/vestland/ressursrapport-fra-sokkeldirektoratet_-status-for-elektrifiseringa-av-sokkelen-1.17041134) that its oil and gas platforms should be powered by electricity from the mainland rather than gas turbines. That means most of (https://www.eia.gov/international/content/analysis/countries_long/norway/) Norway’s energy production depends on the impeccable functioning of electricity cables—and in turn, so does the rest of Europe, since Norway is now the region’s top supplier (https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/infographics/eu-gas-supply/) of natural gas. Russian Intelligence Paid Taliban Fighters Up to $200,000 Per Attack on US Forces, Investigation Finds

Russian military intelligence (GRU) allegedly paid Taliban fighters and other militant groups in Afghanistan to carry out attacks targeting US and coalition forces. According to an investigation by The Insider, in collaboration with Der Spiegel, the scheme reportedly operated between 2016 and 2019, offering payments of up to $200,000 per killed soldier and costing Russia an estimated $30 million.

"For years, GRU paid various terrorist groups in Afghanistan for attacks aimed at US and coalition forces. The Insider not only uncovered evidence of this program's existence but also identified specific GRU officers involved. To transfer money to Taliban fighters and other groups, Russian intelligence operated a network of Afghan couriers disguised as a gemstone trading company. After completing their missions, the couriers were granted Russian documents and refuge in Russia," the report stated.

Treasury Intensifies Sanctions Against Russia by Targeting Russia’s Oil Production and Exports

WASHINGTON — Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury took sweeping action to fulfill the G7 commitment to reduce Russian revenues from energy, including blocking two major Russian oil producers. Today’s actions also impose sanctions on an unprecedented number of oil-carrying vessels, many of which are part of the “shadow fleet,” opaque traders of Russian oil, Russia-based oilfield service providers, and Russian energy officials. Today’s actions are underpinned by the issuance of a new determination that authorizes sanctions pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 14024 against persons operating or having operated in the energy sector of the Russian Federation economy. These actions substantially increase the sanctions risks associated with the Russian oil trade.

The United Kingdom (UK) is also taking action today, joining Treasury in sanctioning two major Russian oil producers.

“The United States is taking sweeping action against Russia’s key source of revenue for funding its brutal and illegal war against Ukraine,” said Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen. “This action builds on, and strengthens, our focus since the beginning of the war on disrupting the Kremlin’s energy revenues, including through the G7+ price cap launched in 2022. With today’s actions, we are ratcheting up the sanctions risk associated with Russia’s oil trade, including shipping and financial facilitation in support of Russia’s oil exports.”

The Department of State is also taking steps to reduce Russia’s energy revenues by blocking two active liquefied natural gas projects, a large Russian oil project, and third-country entities supporting Russia’s energy exports. State is also designating numerous Russia-based oilfield service providers and senior officials of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom.

He will most likely talk tough with empty threats but slowly reduce aid to Ukraine.

All that will do is cause the Ukranian army to collapse in next few months.

Then he will probably wash his hands on the whole thing like Pilatus

At the end of June last year, the volume of exports of Russian goods to the USA fell to the lowest level since 1996 - only 186.7 million dollars....there's not much meat on the bone.

Nuclear brinksmanship is back

Russian security official Sergei Shoigu warns in an interview published this morning that the risk of an armed clash between nuclear powers is rising.

Shoigu, the secretary of President Vladimir Putin’s Security Council, tells TASS news agency: “Against the backdrop of increasing conflict and aggravation of geopolitical rivalry in the world, the risks of a violent clash between major states, including with the participation of nuclear powers, are growing.”

The former defense minister charges that NATO is increasing activities on its eastern flank, close to Russia and Belarus, and rehearsing offensive as well as defensive scenarios there.

NATO says it is Russia that is raising tensions, including by announcing in 2023 that it was deploying tactical nuclear weapons in its ally Belarus, which borders three NATO countries.

Trump and Zelensky pushing for talks with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/volodymyr-zelenskyy-become-global-phenomenon-rcna24355)has accused Vladimir Putin of being “afraid” to negotiate after his Russian counterpart refused to engage in peace talks with him and once again questioned his legitimacy.

The latest exchange between the two leaders came amid mounting pressure on both sides from President Donald Trump to end the war. Trump last week threatened Moscow with a new tranche of sanctions (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/donald-trump-vladimir-putin-russia-ukraine-war-sanctions-threat-rcna188960), saying that Zelenskyy was ready to negotiate a “deal” to end the war that has been grinding on for almost three years.

Writing late Tuesday in a post on X (https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/1884340357032247731), Zelenskyy said that “Putin once again confirmed that he is afraid of negotiations, afraid of strong leaders, and does everything possible to prolong the war.”

NATO scrambles for drones that can survive the Arctic
By Reuters January 30, 2025

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) In 2023, Mads Petersen, owner of Greenland-based startup Arctic Unmanned, sat in a car to keep warm while he tested a small drone at minus 43 degrees Celsius (minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit).

The cold soon drained the drone's power.

"The battery only lasted for three minutes," he said.

Governments in the world's far north are seeking to overcome such challenges as the region comes increasingly into the geopolitical spotlight.

Russia and China have stepped up military activity in the Arctic, while NATO states in the region are reporting more acts of sabotage on energy and communications lines. President Donald Trump has recently revived U.S. claims to Greenland.

The conflict in Ukraine, meanwhile, has shown that unmanned aircraft can provide critical intelligence and strike capabilities on the battlefield.

The United States, which sees the Arctic as crucial for territorial defence and its early warning system against nuclear attacks, said in a July strategy document it would focus on unmanned technology to counter Chinese-Russian collaboration there. Russian and Chinese bomber planes flew together off the coast of Alaska in July and their coast guard ships sailed together through the Bering Strait in October.

But drones whether multicopters or fixed wing models are vulnerable. Only the largest, long-range models have enough power for anti-icing systems like those used by aircraft. Cold, fog, rain or snow can cause a malfunction or crash.

With countries boosting military spending, a Reuters survey of 14 companies and six defence ministries and armed forces in northern Europe and America shows the industry working at pace to buy or develop drones that can endure icy conditions, and increasing urgency among NATO states to acquire them.

"We are all having to catch up with Ukraine and Russia," said General Major Lars Lervik, head of the Norwegian Army.

No global data is publicly available on states' military drone fleets, but Lervik said the war in Ukraine has given Moscow and Kyiv valuable experience of drone technology that NATO countries lack.

Russia, whose military began building up a drone fleet in the Arctic in 2014, took an early lead in the race to control the Northern Sea Route, a passage between Europe and Asia along Russia's northern coast, said James Patton Rogers, a drone expert at Cornell University and a UN and NATO policy adviser....

We heard for over two years from Zelensky that negotiations couldn't even begin until Russian troops had completely left Ukraine... now it's Putin that doesn't want to negotiate? Please!

And as long as Biden, and now Trump bankrolls this war for Ukraine Z has no reason whatsoever to stop it, nor negotiate.

It's up to Trump now. Will he follow in Biden's footsteps, or, will he pull the plug? Don't be surprised if the old man didn't make a deal in the 11th hour of the campaign to continue as prescribed by Biden. He's got some time...Biden gave Z enough money to get thru till Summer.

Two top Russian colonels plunge from high windows with one killed and the other left fighting for life as spate of mysterious deaths involving Putin officials continues

A top Russian colonel has died after mysteriously plunging 50ft from a window, while another was seriously injured from a similar fall in the latest spate of suspicious deaths involving Kremlin officials.

Colonel Alexey Zubkov - an employee for the Russian Investigative Committee - is fighting for his life after he plummeted 40ft from a bathroom window, according to Telegram channel VChK-OGPU.

Miraculously, Col. Zubkov was 'conscious' after his fall and 'briskly answered questions' but was unable to explain the reasons for his plunge.

He is the head of the forensic investigations department specialising in the study of digital information, with access to detailed information about secret investigations.

Col. Zubkov's fall came soon after a Russian anti-monopoly service official Artur Pryakhin, 56, who had previously been a police colonel, was found dead after he fell from a fifth floor window in Petrozavodsk.

Authorities were reportedly looking into his death, but official media outlets rushed out reports that he died by 'suicide' before an investigation had concluded.

Amen. Let 'em keep Kursk. We'll keep everything we regained including access to that southern water.

& Trump wants that 350+ billion dollars Biden already gave them back.

Turns out everything the EU gave them (100 billion smackers) was on loan.

Do what you think best. Give us the 350 billion dollars you owe us and we'll leave with all the military shit we have over there. You'll still have Poland, England, Italy, France, all those countries.

Keep your minerals, give us cash, American cash, or, back to the gold you got stashed.

Zelensky is actually the one who first proposed the "minerals for aid" concept.

This happened under Biden, yet some people are outraged at the notion because Trump actually played along with the offer

He's saying first Biden asked for the minerals in lieu of repaying the money. Then Trump came along and half portended that it was his own idea to dun Z for said minerals. And earlier this week Z said "yes."

Now Z is is saying "no."

They didn't have much by the time we beat them. The country was in ruins.

It is a bit ironic though because the British had to repay us billions for aid we gave them during WW2, and the country that started the war had to pay us nothing.

Zelensky proposed to Biden the idea of minerals for aid. I don't think Biden asked for it.
