My brother-in-law works in construction and his company won the bid to construct it. He showed me some of the floor plans. It’s gonna be pretty badass tbh. The practice facility itself will be 3-stories with a rooftop.

It will all depend on what Michael Dell wants to do with the team. It will take him a couple of years to get a new stadium built in Austin once he acquires another 31% of the team.

I don't think there was ever really a serious threat to leave and the team was already heading a good direction, but yes...Wemby definitely makes it easier.

Frank Miceli, chief revenue officer of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, said they expect it to be a record-breaking year for ticket sales.

I think the threat was probably a lot more serious than a lot of people want to admit to. Thankfully I think it's all going to be moot now, but a new arena is going to be discussed soon. Hopefully the City doesn't fuck it up again.

If the Spurs hadn’t won the Lottery and were still dogwater in 2030 when our lease is up with the AT&T Center, there’s a significant chance the team would’ve been headed up I-35 imo. Had we not landed Wemby but were still at least competitive over the coming years, then that’s prob not the case. But this franchise has been bleeding money the past 3 years and were near dead last in ticket sales the past 2 seasons. Tough for a market as small as ours. I don’t see how they would’ve managed a new arena had that continued. Assuming Wemby can stay relatively healthy and isn’t a complete dud, that more likely isn’t a valid concern any longer, as the above stated. Spurs won the jackpot with this years draft lottery tbh.

Meh, I doubt the Spurs lost any money the past few years. Definitely not as profitable, but ownership knew leaner times were ahead when they agreed to the rebuild.

Read an online blurb that these will be the two cities. Yet another divisional re-alignment as we go from 30 teams and 6 divisions of 5 teams, to 32 teams, and probably 8 divisions of 4 teams.

They either should go back to four divisions, this time with 8 teams each, or better yet just do away with divisions entirely. All that really matters is the conference table anyway.

You only have to move one team East to give them 16, then Vegas and Seattle plus the other 14 West teams makes 16 there. I think Minnesota makes the most sense.

West divisions:
PHO, LAL, LAC, LV
POR, SEA, SAC, GS
OC, DEN, UTA, DAL
MEM, NO, SA, HOU

East divisions:
MIA, ORL, CHA, ATL
MIN, MIL, CHI, DET
IND, CLE, WAS, PHI
NY, BRK, TOR, BOS

The Wolves have always been closer to the East's Central division than any of its Western conference mates. I don't see a way to keep the Texas Triangle together while moving MIN to the East and trying to keep geographic proximity as a priority. Otherwise they could switch MEM and DAL.

I would go a step further and eliminate the conferences. Seed the playoffs 1-16. This way you have a much better chance of the Finals actually being the two best teams in the league.

The play-in would be 13 vs 16 and 14 vs 15, with the winners getting the 13 and 14 seeds. 17 vs 20 and 18 vs 19, losers are out. Loser of 13/16 plays winner of 18/19 for the 15 seed, loser of 14/15 plays winner of 17/20 for the 16th seed. (Maybe 18/19 and 17/20 should be switched there)

I would also want seeds 1-7 (in order) to be able to pick their first round opponents, so that a team can't tank into a specific matchup or give a lower seed the advantage of playing a higher seed with an important injured player. I'm not sure if I would want that to extend past the first round, but my instinct would be yes so that teams give more priority to winning regular season games.

We will never know, and I am halfway of the opinion that the makings of a relocation were slowly building momentum but with that being said look at what one draft pick can do to bring all of us together again.

I agree. All 3 major N.A. sports and even Stanley’s Cup does the finals by conferences though. It’s uncompetitive and backwards imo tbh fwiw.

Can’t think of a reason why except maybe they want some kind of precious historic Finals rivalries but they just don’t happen. That actually might happen more in a 1-16 because the two best records in the league historically don’t change teams wildly over a two year period and over the last 3 decades have been absolutely stacked in the Western conference.

taps
07-20-2023, 07:17 PM
If keeping conferences makes sense for reducing team travel in the RS I’m all for it, but do 1-16 seeds in the playoffs because the current system reduces the quality of the playoffs so much. Maybe they’re afraid of the East Coast turning off their set because Philly and New York suck so vigorously but they haven’t made it to the playoffs much this century anyway.

They’re lucky the spurs went on a run or else it would have been a major fuck up. That wasn’t some amazing foresight, just dumb luck.

I’m not allergic to paying taxes. Having lived in various American cities now, I can definitely see the value of having a stabilizing draw to your city’s primary economic/entertainment center. Have to say last time I was in SA a few year back, I was very concerned the downtown seemed to be dying (I don’t count the Pearl as downtown, some may disagree). Not saying having the Spurs down there is a panacea, but it doesn’t hurt either.

Don't confuse Divisions (which really serve no purpose) and Conferences!

Divisions, and to a lesser extent conferences, exist to have teams that are geographically close to each other play more often than those that are far apart.

In the days of players flying commercial and such it made sense. But personally I think there is no need for divisions or conferences at all anymore. The current setup makes it far too common to have the two best teams in the league meet before the Finals, and sometimes even before the conference finals.
