The bar better be pretty damn high to guarantee his contract for next year. Might be able to get a first for his expiring if we are willing to take on a salary in return.

Negative, ghost rider. Any multi year deals that teams want to move will still be there this summer, and you can sort out which is best. The ONLY thing you might do is to trade WHG for a more expensive player on an ending contract, plus a pick to enable a team to get under the tax this year. Otherwise you just waive him before 30 June.

Unless we are barred from trading him again before the deadline, a team looking for cap relief could trade a similar 2 yr contract for Juan (not Willy) and decline their team option on Juan (again not Willy) before June 30th. Free agency starts July 1st so we can’t sort that out in the offseason as you mentioned above.

I don’t think I’d take on a multi year, right now, unless it was for a FRP. we can probably pull another SRP for taking a larger ending contract, and still have options this summer. I’d rather not tie up our cap for next year until we explore FA and any and all salary dump options.
PHO is in bad tax shape, so we can probably pull a FRP to take Saric’s deal, AND he will be healthy and a serviceable player next year, AND maybe we can flip him at next season’s deadline to a contender, or a team needing tax relief.
You’ve got to think ahead and not close off your future options unless the deal is really favorable to you.

From my vantage point FRPs don’t trade hands like they used to, are in high demand, and especially sparse supply with multiple teams leveraging their future FRPs on suspect bets. My suggestion clearly stated an FRP yet, you still attempted to rebut. We don’t need Saric’s serviceability to make an FRP make sense and that will still be there regardless. If you are in a position to land FRPs now take them. That is me thinking ahead. We just ate 24mm in salary and gave up an MVP candidate for a 2025 protected first; hardly thinking ahead. We have 30mm cap space this summer with very moveable contracts to clear more cap space as required. We have 0 free agent targets.
JHG can’t clear cap space for another team this off-season because, as you know, we have to guarantee him on June 30th

I don't see what the Spurs would lose by playing him some. If Pop likes what he sees, he might offer Juancho a medium sized contract, maybe 2/10?
Cutting him doesn't make much sense, and the team is thin at PF anyway. His stats at least look passable: half his shots are threes, he hits around 35% for his career, WS/48 is meh but not terrible. I haven't watched him so I don't know how his defense is.

Nothing to lose by giving him a shot but have to decide by June 30th to pick up his option and guarantee his 2022-23 salary of 7mm. I don’t know the rules around if we can cut him and resign him in. the offseason for less. I’m also getting fed up with all these deep end of the bench signings. Eubanks, Landale, KBD potentially Juancho the list goes on.

Problem is it’ll take him half the season to earn some minutes.
I’m very confident he will be waived before June 30th. That 14 game stretch in Minny is nice and all but pretty small sample size. 7mm isn’t alot I know but there is likely a much better use of the cap space. Getting pretty tired of these end of the bench singings and misuse of cap.
This year >50mm or ~45% of our cap space was used on the following players (compensation we received for it):
- Thad, 14mm (no contribution to team and buyout probable)
- Aminu, 10mm (bought out, fair to equate the 2 SRPs in the DDR trade to eating his salary)
- Carrol, 1.7mm (~20mm total bought out 2yrs prior for >90 cents on the dollar)
- Huthison, 4mm (waived, early 22 SRP for 4mm = fair return)
- Luka, 3mm (paying him to play elsewhere)
- Forbes, 4.5mm (far out SRP and optionality on Juanco = fair return)
- McDermott, 13.8mm (3yr/42mm was probably an overpayment, jury still out)
When Spurs fans talk about the great contracts our 3 best players are on: DJ (15mm), Jak (9mm) and to a lesser extent White (15.4mm) they should remember where those savings are going.
^ based on your list above, seems that outside of the Carrol blunder and Luka situation that the returns aren’t that terrible.
Another way to look at it, the space produced: 1 FRP and 4 SRP, with Thad situation TBD.
Also, wasnt there a favorable pick swap in the McDermott deal?

I suspect there is a better chance than most here believe that he will stay on beyond this year, especially if Thad is bought out.
I personally like the idea of carrying an expiring 7M-10M for potential trade ballast next year. It’s a reason I don’t mind carrying Sarics deal in that hypothetical Thad trade either.

2026 SRP swap with Indy. No real way to value this but in my eyes a below average return for 50mm in cap. I see the FRP as compensation for giving up DDR.

Agree on Saric but he is a much better player than Juan. Curious why you think Thad being bought out makes Juan more likely to be retained next year?

Maybe it’s a stretch, but if Thad gets bought out I can see them keeping their lone “traditional PF” next year whose gotten at least some run already with the guys. If/when free agent signing (or rookie) surpasses him, he can be moved or relegated to a better role.
(As an aside, I think the Keldon at PF thing has proven to be a failure this year).

I don’t really see how Thad’s situation effects Juan’s likelihood of being retained as regardless of Thad being bought out, traded to finishing the season with us he won’t be back next year.
Keldon as a 4 has not been ideal and he needs to play the majority of time at the 3 in my
opinion. Poor roster construction and Pop’s fetish with small (poor 3pt shooting small ball nonetheless) the last 3 years has had guys playing out of position. Vassell is another who should be strictly a 2/3.

He seems like a hustle guy, I think got an offensive rebound and tried to save a possession. Again his international background fits Spurs culture. We can never have enough mobile big who can shoot outside. With the way Spurs play defense, Pop can put another fresh legs in the 3rd, and keep the starting unit fresh to close the 4th.

Yeah, remember when we all thought the Parker/Mills back courts were too small? Good times. A lot of this team's problems revolve around Pop not realizing that the SF position is basically a "big guard" but for the PF position you need someone with the size and strength to play on the interior, at least 6'8". Seriously, if we simply played Thad at the 4, a lot of these problems go away.

Thad has no lateral speed to chase mobile 4. Besides Thad was never meant to stay, but a trade piece that has not gotten through.

Well, they cut Chriss immediately, so I’m not sure what there was to say about him. He had the rep as a dumbass, and he was injured. Totally different situation to JHG, who may stick for the year, or may be shipped out in another deal. Since he came alone from BOS, not in a group of players, he could be packaged and sent out before the deadline.

I think that’s only when you’re traded from one team to another in a group of players to begin with. He arrived alone from Boston. Denver could hypothetically flip Forbes again, if they wanted, even with other players. Only Boston is limited in this deal since they received two players. If they weren’t injured, they could move both players individually, but not repackage them with other players.

Can’t see too many scenarios where we’d need to aggregate with Thad but with Walker and/or Eubanks would have been nice.
As you can probably tell I’m pretty anxious for PATFO to show some savvy in the coming months. I’m obviously not privy to what goes on behind closed doors but they seem lackluster in this rebuild, almost as if they were forced to rebuild as none of the vets wanted to come back.

I’m sure they’re working the phones. Most trades just happen on deadline day, especially if they involve value, and not finances. Front offices don’t want to rush, and miss a better trade that could have happened.

He came in listed as 6’6 but NBA.com has him at 6’4 now. Pretty common these days to have inflated heights when they enter the draft. Well he just turned 19 so I’m sure there is a chance he has another 0.5-1. Still shouldn’t be playing at the 3 if he doesn’t have to.
