gotta love the softness of this team
This team should easily be able to compete with the Pelicans, but multiple guys are just shitting the fucking bed
Murray, Keldon, Primo....wake the fuck up
Vassell is probably our best player so far, along with Poeltl

Don't go cliff jumping just yet. And I'm not talking about this game, the Spurs are almost certainly going to lose.
But to take one bad game and act like the team is just chock full of players who will always choke in future years when it counts is lazy. It's a one-game sample.

Pelicans playing more exciting basketball. spurs relying too much on the 3 ball. Spurs need to add a future star who can break down a defense and take it to the basket. Bring on Ivey with some lucky lottery luck.

It’s disappointing to be sure but this game is magnifying the team’s greatest deficiencies from the regular season.
Lack of length and rebounding from the two forward spots, inconsistent defensive efforts and lack of gameplan understanding.

Yeah once again, playing for THIS shit wasn't worth the couple of draft spots. What a waste of time.
The play in is fucking worthless and meant for teams/fans that can’t accept that their team is not good enough to make the playoffs so they want to watch one game to tell us what we already know. Other than the Grizzlies beating Golden state last year and I can see the Hawks beating the Cavs (although that’s not much of an “upset”), the play in has played out exactly like the seedlings should have been anyways.

This the type of game that makes you question whether or not you can bring back guys next year lol
Which is what I think is more valuable than a draft pick.
And maybe...just maybe this stops the old man from playing Keldon at the 4 :lol
"Keldon at the 4" is the new Bryn Forbes :lol

Honestly a beat down here wouldn’t be a bad thing for the Spurs imo. Shows the FO, Pop and players they have a long way to go. And especially it should show the FO the teams gaping holes (4-man, defense, rebounding, IQ) need to be fixed in the draft and off season trades/free agency.
paperboy77
04-13-2022, 10:16 PM
Funny you mention that. We became a better team when we started playing 2 of Poeltl, Collins, and Landale together, since Landale and Collins will shoot from the perimeter. I doubt we see one second of Landale. And the Pop had the nerve to complain about poor rebounding. Meanwhile a rookie coach in Greene has no problem putting his second round pick this year on whoever he thinks is our best offensive player on the floor.
Funny you post this. We just might see Landele but way late contributing too a wayyyyy too late comeback. Don't know how long you've been following the Spurs but Pops historically stubborn and won't try all options for what ever reason.
I guess Kelden Johnson over packed for this trip.

IMO you always learn things in game like this. Defense and physicality plus nerves aren’t the same as the regular season. This is a different kind of beast. Some players mature and get betters others don’t and you move on from them. I hope.

Your totally ignoring the lead up to get to that play in. Too many teams would have called quits 15 games ago. Spurs played well to get into that 10th spot. It was a great achievement for the team and they needed that experience.
And you bring up grizzlies. They straight up said that play in which they lost to the blazers was a huge learning experience.

The grizzlies have a legit franchise player in Ja Morant.. We still don’t while our best player is Murray. All we’ve learned from these past two play ins is that the spurs aren’t good enough to make the playoffs. It just would be nice to have a direction that isn’t just getting 35 wins and hoping to make the play in.

I agree, but Pop is such a stubborn dickhead that who's to say that he will even care about what this game shows him.
Every single defensive metric tell you not to play Keldon at the 4. Just play him at the 3, and have Primo come off the bench, and between Collins, Poeltl, and Landale, play 2 of the 3.

People also need to remember the Pelicans have a good squad and home court. Since the CJ trade they have been balling, and even before then. It’s a well constructed team. They have size, athleticism, defense, rebounding, scoring, two all-star caliber scorers in Ingram and CJ.
This version of the Pelicans next year is a 45-50 win team if they stay healthy. If Zion comes back they move Hayes to the bench they could win 50+. Although Zion being traded is more likely given his Kawhi/Uncle Dennis type actions this year.

Watching CJ play, I can’t help but feel like Portland traded the wrong guard. The dude gets his teammates involved, plays in the flow of the offense, and isn’t afraid to take over. He also competes defensively. He’s kinda the antithesis of Lillard. Plus Portland could’ve gotten a bigger package for Lillard

It’s not. And he never will be. Dejounte’s a good player, but he’s just not that guy, especially in big games, where he tends to shrink. That can always change down the line of course, but what won’t ever change is the fact that he’s not a #1 scorer. And realistically, he’s not even a #2 if you’re actually trying to contend for anything. He’s a #3 on a contender.

Agree 100%. And playing CJ as the lead guard or point guard next to a bigger defensive 2 guard just makes him even more of a beast because he has the ball in his hands more (underrated passer and decision maker) and hides his deficiency (size, defense). The Blazers literally wasted 5 years playing CJ and Dame together, I said 3-4 years ago you need to break that shit up. They both gave the same weaknessses and similar strengths. A duplication of skills and multiplication of weaknesses.

Same issue all year, Spurs too small to play a traditional lineup and too poor shooting to play successful small ball.
I tried to tell people. They won a bunch of their games against teams that were tanking hard, and better teams who were looking past them. My biggest worry tonight was that the P's would tank, and it's too early to say that they won't do it still.
They have a PF who's really a 3, and a PG who really needs to be a 2 playing alongside a PG. And they plain don't have a PF. It's bad roster construction.
A lot of that could shake out if they got a real PF. I wish Jak was more aggressive and/or could drop out to shoot 3's. But he's better than Rasho ever was. He's not the problem. There are three potentially perfect fits at the top of this draft, and the Spurs needed to give themselves a reasonably shot at getting one.
Unless they catch lightning in a bottle and find a franchise player in the mid to late teens, get used to mediocrity.
If the Spurs lose this game, Dejounte is culprit number 1.

It's a one game sample. If you want to overreact to it, be my guest. But I'm not going to join you. The Pelicans are a slightly better team and they had home court, of course the Spurs were underdogs. And it wasn't a blowout, the 10-point final margin is pretty indicative of how the game went.
Meanwhile I will start burning incense for the lottery gods. A 20% chance at a top 4 pick is nothing to sneeze at, and #9 can produce a high quality player.

Look at how bad the bench was tonight. If you can't afford to have your star player in foul trouble for one quarter then your team is shallow AF. Disappointed in Keldon. He got straight up bitched. And it seems like the book is out on him. Run him off the 3 point line, put some length on him, and it nullifies his offense. He just doesn't have the athleticism or quickness to deal with someone like Herb guarding him.
I hope this is Lonnie last game. He just drifts in and out. To many games where he is a non factor. Would have been nice if he was more aggressive with Dejounte playing bad but oh well. Thanks for the memories Lonnie.
Impressed with Devin. I think he is going to take a big leap next year. He was ultra aggressive and went for his.
Most importantly I am disappointed in Pop and I pray this is his last game. Keldon at the 4 has been a colossal failure defensively all year, he was lucky enough that Doug got hurt and forced him to play Collins and Landale with Poeltl, and as soon as Landale got hurt he went right back to this shit again. I mean are we really even trying to get a power forward cause I feel like Pop is content with leaving Keldon there.

Its been clear all year that we don't have a #1 option. I think KJ and DJM would be good 2 and 3 options. Especially since Keldon should improve the next two years.
Honestly the longer it sits with me the more I am impressed with how DJM and Keldon came out in that 2nd half after being down. They showed a lot of heart. Would have been really easy to give up and pack it in.

He is easily the best player the Spurs have right now, all things considered.
That said, he sucked donkey balls tonight. And he does have a tendency of making stupid, costly mistakes in crucial moments.
You don’t have to agree with me. It’s just my opinion. But I watch all the games just like you do.
One thing we really never talk about with Murray is that he was just supposed to be a complimentary piece to Kawhi and instead he has to be the best player on the team now. He is going to have his growing pains cause he is trying to fit a role he was never supposed to have.

I like seeing more games, but the play-in is really unfair to the 7 & 8 seed. Everyone plays the same amount games and if you don't make the cut so be it. Tonight was not a great night for Murray to shoot so poorly.

Mostly good stuff from this game imo….DJ should see he has to get better at shooting next season, Keldon didn’t give up, Devin played great to build his confidence, Primo and Tre didn’t seem lost out there. Spurs should some heart in coming back after a gutless start. Game also showcased Spurs huge need for an athletic power forward type.

Not to mention, Murray got ill at a pretty bad time and had one game to get shit sorted.

Pop asked in his post-game presser if he’s coming back next season.
His response was, “That’s an inappropriate question.”

Herb Jones is one of the most underrated players in the league right now: 12 pts, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, while guarding Dejounte, Keldon, and Devin.

We need to pick someone in the draft with elite athleticism no matter what the position is tbh. Granted we need an athletic big, but I am sick and tired of having no athletic freaks on our team. Lonnie is the only one the entire team, most teams have multiple players.
Murray is athletic.

Team is too small-pops doing
Needed more and did not get it this game from DJM-I expected it
KJ tried but just could not make a difference
Vassel is a keeper
Jakob fought-he is OK for the right price
Young lotto left me wishing for more
Jones, Lonnie were OK if cheap
I like Richardson but who knows about him
I wish pop would leave

And then he talked about "who we draft". He's coming back.

I'll be in the minority here, but I would like to see Pop come back. This team will be better next season no matter what.

I think so too. But he could’ve just said that if we plans on it. Pop’s always gotta be aloof.

I thought it was an excellent game played by New Orleans. We could not stop them. In fact, I believe the Spurs got the benefit of the calls there.
Hoping Murray continues to grow and becomes our all-around general. This team goes, where he goes. Otherwise, I like our pieces and hope to get the core next season. Would be hard to see Lonnie go though. Part of drafting so well is letting some of these guys go.
Also, does anyone see a little Malik Rose in Keldon Johnson? Maybe he can fill that role in the team, you think?

Could have been worse, we could have seen Demar shoot 3/19 today if he was still on the team :lol
