Who cares? This guy has been living off of Parker becoming a solid mid range pullup shooter and Scumbag a relatively well rounded one for years.

In recent years, only Murray (but he was a virtual non shooter when he arrived and is still mostly limited to mid range pullups) and possibly Johnson (still a relatively small sample size on his spot up 3) have shown significant improvement in their shooting. White, Walker IV and it's still early, but Vassell and Primo have all underperformed expectations, among others.

I don't blame him, but he isn't the miracle worker he's made out to be.

I highly doubt the Spurs have a proper replacement. They will have somebody to replace him, but given how this fanchise has replaced people for the last half a decade the quality will take a huge hit. It's like replacing Dejounte Murray with Tre Jones

I'd argue it would be replacing the best PG with Tre Jones. Chip Engelland was widely regarded as the best shooting coach in the league, bar none. This is like replacing Steve Nash / Magic Johnson with Tre Jones.

RC_Drunkford

He's got a great track record, but many other organizations have also had great success improving player's shooting, like Toronto and NO among others. I don't know where he is going, but if it's Golden State (they're paying north of 170M in luxury tax) or he's retiring, there's nothing you can do but find the best possible replacement.

Seventyniner
07-11-2022, 05:36 PM
He was never going to stay forever. He isn't terribly old (61) but might be ready for a transition now that the Spurs are no longer even pretending to be competitive.

Sucks, but things like this happen.

DAF86
07-11-2022, 05:39 PM
Yeah the guy who fixed the completely broken shots of Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard ain't shit.

I'm not saying Chip ain't shit, but he's definitely overrated. There are thousands of shooting coaches who have fixed broken shots all around the globe but aren't seen as the second coming of Jesus. For every shot that Chip "fixed", there are just as many players who couldn't improve their shooting under his tutelage. The guy is definitely good at what he does, that's why he's where he is, but he isn't some kind of difference maker. All shooting coaches tell you more or less the same shit. It all depends on the players.

I'd argue we need him now more than ever. So many young players to develop, several with seeming shooting deficiencies (Jones, Primo, Vassell, Sochan, Branham)....and now he decides to jump ship?

I agree that he's either angling towards retirement, or going to Golden State to work with his buddy Kerr.

Again. The Warriors are paying 170 MILLION in luxury tax... if he's going there (like someone said over here), do you think there's a chance in hell we could stop him? The Spurs have made a habit of finding and promoting staff... they're going to have to do it again.

Someone said He and Kerr went to high school together so that puts him as a native Californian, as Kerr says, "...from the mean streets of Pacific Palisades". Maybe he just wants to return there and prepare for retirement with a championship quality team. Not to mention he probably has some great retirement benefits after 20 years with the Spurs. He can be a double dipper until he decides to finally retire.

Looks like the same high school- Pacific palisades Kerr 83, Chip 79 not sure they overlapped but close.
15 years with one team, 61 years
Current head coach a retirement possibility every year. Makes sense- thanks Chip and best of luck with whatever you do.

Also makes sense for the Spurs to move on from him. They have a whole team of under age drinkers and need someone more long term

Wouldn't be surprised if the Warriors are poaching him. They probably see the writing on the wall with their big three aging and don't want to end up like the Spurs after Duncan/Manu/Parker retired. Apparently, they're doubling their developmental staff and already took key people from Toronto.

I think they're set for another 3 to 5 years. I think their odds or ringing next year are better than they were this year.

Not only do they get Wiseman back, they have two guys from their G League team that have dropped 30+ in summer league outside of Wiseman. Steph and Klay will eventually fall off but they'll be good for another 5 yrs. I'd count on at least 1 if not 2 more rings on that span.
