Shame, but I guess he wasn't going to be around forever.

Sad news, but he lived a long and fulfilling life and was a better player, person, and icon than anybody could ever reasonably hope for.

May he rest in peace and his family find comfort knowing that he left it all out there on the court and in the world.

A man of great conviction and integrity along with a fighting spirit. Even though he was way before my time I will always remember him as the Godfather of the NBA.

On a sidenote I remember Bill many years ago telling Tim Duncan in an interview that he would want him at his funeral. I wonder if Tim will go to his funeral.

I actually remember him saying that he wanted Tim to be one of his pallbearers.

Still can't believe Russell's jump was so quick and anticipation so good he could tip his shotblocks upward so he could grab the rebound too. Never seen any other player who could do that.

He helped put the NBA on the map when it was little more than a carnival act.

Lord of the Rings. The greatest winner in the history of American sports. And a man of conviction.

RIP to a legend and one of the GOAT’s.

Don’t know , don’t care. Being a decent human being transcends time/era’s; basketball is basketball.

The world is a little bit darker today. We lost a shining light.

Champion on and off the court.....this is his legacy.

He was a fighter, a warrior, a winner, and did so with so much class, dignity, and respect.

RIP Mr. Russell

If he suited up for the season he's in the top 12.

Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlin were so amazing as basketball players. They wil never get the respect they deserve against the modern greats.

russell transcended the sport, in a myriad of ways; i'm sure he would have been detested by all the ST members of the "shut up and play" chorus.

RIP Bill Russell, a true remaining NBA legend from that glory days of black and white television. Somehow I find him closest to Timmy in style of play, defensive-minded who just knows to win, while Timmy was a more dominant offensive player. But they just win when it matters most, in the playoffs.

Great guy. Sadly ironic that one of the most racist towns in the NBA is where he suited them up.

In the 50s and 60s cities in the south were more racist than Boston.

Nope. I remember watching the news at night, and Southie threw cinderblocks at busses of black kids heading to formerly all white schools. They didn’t have any laws, or segregated lunch counters, but their racism was as virulent as the south.

I never saw either of them play, but I am always in amazement looking at their stats, especially Wilt on offense. Both would probably still be very good if they played in a different era.

This news really does suck. Anytime Bill Russell spoke, I always enjoyed hearing what he had to say. I don't know much about Bill Russell the basketball player as it wasn't anywhere close my era that I grew up in, but I do know Bill Russell the person was an amazing man with all the stuff he did off the court. Great, great man.

Bill Russell played in 22 winner-take-all games throughout his basketball career. Ten of those were Game 7s.

He won all 22 games.

Dear God. Talk about a winner.

Wow! It's weird to me that these days the GOAT conversation is always Lebron VS. MJ, and that Kareem, Magic and especially Bill Russell are often left out of the conversation.
