View Full Version : The Arsenal FC thread : reborn?

Yes it might end up being another LOL Arsenal thread, but during the 2nd half of last season they started showing positive thigs, even when they lost games (the home loss vs Man City was a good example of that)

They signed Jesus and Zinchenko; Jesus has been impressive, sure it's preseason, but scoring braces and hat tricks vs Chelsea and Sevilla is not a bad performance at all; he also makes plays for others and his movements off the ball are fantastic.

Zinchenko is a instant upgrade at the LB spot an he should benefit from more paying time; he can also play MF.

And Arteta knows them very well from his Man City days.

Martinelli is a talented player who improves every year; same with Oodegard (who was just named Captain by the way)

Negatives : Their defense is still a question mark and Xhaka is a walking red card, and they'll need Jesus to stay healthy.

But so far the Gunners aren't looking so bad; can they compete for top 4? probably not, but nobody picked Leicester to win a title in 2016 either.

City, Liverpool and Chelsea should finish ahead of them, as well a Tottenham if Conte doesn't lose his locker room - he literally killed his players in pre-season training :lol

Man United? Too early to tell, their offense in pre-season under their new manager Ten Haag looked really good, but United has been really cursed since Sir Alex left (and it's just the pre-season)

They can definitely finish top 4, given they choked on their d!cks last season while comfortably in 4th at the end of last season :lol

Jesus was a good pickup, I personally think they can be better than Chelsea even. We'll see, they're a walking disappointment for 15+ years (and phuck Xhaka)

There was an Arsenal pub I requented when I first started my footy journey. Depression. I dunno how they didn't snag Lewandowski.

From the Undefeated Season Gunners to this endless retooling.

I mean in the past before he joined Dortmund.

that’s one reason

ownership had to pay for the new stadium which prevented them from signing top players

Recent past, I usually dislike their signings. They seem to go so young and just unproven OR 2nd tier establishment player - Aubameyang and Xhaka. I think Wenger stuck with a formula too long and its gonna take a bit to shake that ingrained mentality.

Should be good enough head start to get top 4 tbh :lol

I've seen this around the top in 1/2 way through the season so I'm not overly excited, and thye need at least 2 buys in the January transfer window. But overall, happy they gave Arteta a chance to build (after wasting 1.5 years with Emery).

They have a good mixture in age and experience imo.
They will go through some rough patches.
I believe this is where the older players can help out if they are calm and not volatile transient types.
They are fun to watch.

I like the project tbh

First of all , give credit to the board for not firing Arteta after so-s results last year; shit takes time and most EPL teams fire managers like it 's a bodily function

Mikel has a done a good job getting rid of extra weight and believing in youth.

Also, naming Odegard cpatain was a smart move imo

Good points

Mahrez is a resilient player, sure he can be frustrated when riding the bench or being substituted early but he he reacts well and is certainly not afraid of any challenge and responds well
Pep also likes him because he is not afraid of taking big shots, even if he misses, Pep still appreciates initiative

He had a rough start, it ws probably due to that last minute elimination from the WC, now that the WC is over he has been playing well

And yes , obeying Pep and shutting up is important lol
Pep can't handle strong personalities IMO :lol

As for Arsenal, Jorginho is a smart hire, seasoned veteran who won almost every major competition bar the WC, important in a young team that is on the verge of winning a PL title and will have 2 huge games vs City, and attributes that fit this Arsenal team

Seems to be a good locker room guy as well

Trossard can play multiple forward positions, and with the absence of Jesus his versatility will be needed down the stretch

Pep

Master Class

Haaland could have easily 4 goals.
Pep absolutely annihilated the Arsenal press.
He turned it into a standing press. Arsenal had zero ways to get the ball effectively.
The score does not reflect the complete dominance of both players and coaching strategy.

That was not a 4-1 game, it was 7-0.
DISMANTLED by a strategy. Bow to Pep. He’s got Haaland utilized properly in less than a year with much more that can be added.
You really must bow to Pep immediately. He is the best.

Not really a masterclass; he just didn't fuck up this time and kept it simple instead of overyhinking

And Arteta went full retard, using the same strategy all season, you don't high press an in form City team, he should have used a low block and he has the players to cointer attack

disagree...

Arsenal changed the type of pressing they did and the counter was devastating. In a game as big as this one master class.
No one touches Pep now. He will go down not only as a master strategist, but a guy who can make players better. He positioned players and turned the press to a stationary mess.

I dont really like him or his personality. But... Its obvious. It does not really change with day to day performances, it comes over time.
This one game is yet another example. I will agree sometimes he tries to win games his way, but when his way works it is so damn obvious.
And his willingness to sit very good players or flat out get rid of them because he sees the game differently is also significant. But dont take it from me. I also see why people thought Messy and Penaldo as great players. Bad habit more people should have imo. Actually liking the game over players and managers.

Because they set up in a way that left giant holes and eventually it came to them standing and waiting.
That was Pep using positional press breaking AND superior on the ball ability.
And he peppered it with long balls to Haaland to keep them off balance. It was absolutely beautiful. All Rob Holding could do against Haaland was... well... hold.
Pep mixed it up magnificently.

Did you watch the game?

The two ex Arsenal color guys were awful. They were so frustrated yet had to give it up to superiority.
Arsenal is still a very good team imo. Their goal keeper was man of the match for them. Wait till the summer. Arsenal will get good players because of their exciting style and potential.
They got it going. Next year will be interesting.

If one tried to introduce soccer to a new fan through an EPL team I would use Arsenal.
They have to be one of the most fun teams to watch.
IMO if their season was reversed and they had to make up ground instead of maintaining a lead it would have helped them mentally.
They were worn out and started making very poor mistakes in the back. On attack I thought they were excellent.
Nice to see them back.
