To everyone worried about Westbrook playing here:

Westbrook would never play one minute here. They would explore a buyout, but would release him regardless. The salary is immaterial, since we are way below the cap, and would have to pay out to the players to hit minimum salary anyway.

Horrible timing for Blake but it’s a long season. More minutes for other youngins.

Ariel
11-01-2022, 10:38 AM
Actually this team may be kind of the ideal destination for Westbrook: devoid of a PG, with plenty of shooters and team oriented players around. But yeah, rehabilitating his career is not a priority, if he ends up a Spur I don't expect him to play one minute, he's not someone you want your youngsters to look up to.

couchman
11-01-2022, 10:48 AM
Bummer timing for Blake.
He will still get a lot of run later in the season as a backup PG but this time RIGHT NOW would have been gold for him.

Crazy to think that Westbrook would look much better with the Spurs, but he would.
He needs shooting around him to unlock whatever game he has left.
Still not worth giving him any playing time of course... hahahha

I agree with Ice. I'd like to see this question answered, if anyone has an idea about if it will affect his athleticism. Thanks.

When it comes to knee injuries, a torn MCL is regarded as relatively minor. ACL, LCL and PCL tears would all be worse. Cartilage/meniscus damage is worse. Patella or patellar tendon damage is worse. A torn MCL is pretty bad but it usually doesn't require surgery and is rarely career threatening or career altering. Athletes are basically cleared to play once the stability of the knee is sufficient and pain has subsided. You can even play through a torn MCL (IIRC, Tom Brady and Dwight Howard played through torn MCLs) if you wear a brace and can deal with the pain.

With the way Wesley went down, an MCL injury is one of the better outcomes. Still bad and sometimes it can linger but far from the worse. The Spurs might sit Wesley for the rest of the season since he's so young and so dependant on his elite athleticism just to play it safe -- but chances are he'll be back at some point in January.

Thanks a lot for the very detailed explanation. I really wish it didn't happen as he was already looking good. I hope he comes back 100% this season and plays. I can't remember the play, but was there direct contact that led to the injury, or did it happen on it's own?

Thanks. I am guessing it's always better if it was due to contact rather than it happening on it's own, right? I recall Kawhi's ACL happening without any contact.

I don't mind him returning later rather than sooner but good to hear that it's only sprained and not torn, assuming the report is already official.
Usually, I think players having injury with a "torn" kinda affects them mentally so it affects their athleticism a bit. The fear of being injured again esp. in the same body and quite understandable. Not all players have the same mental capacity in regaining back their confidence coming from an injury.

The biggest issue is one of his weak points was ability to finish at the rim with this it’s going to take awhile to get over the mental challenge of a possible re injury. Blake Wesley said he’s started rehabbing after suffering a knee injury that threatens to keep him off the court until late December or possibly early January.

“It’s going good,” he said in the locker room before Friday’s win over Milwaukee.

“I’ve started jogging, lifting and getting my routine back," he added. "I’m on the court, not moving, but getting up shots and taking it day by day.”

The 25th overall selection of the 2022 NBA Draft says he's kept his spirits up through prayer and conversations with his parents, who are visiting San Antonio from South Bend, Ind.

Wesley said it was a “blessing” his injury didn’t require surgery.

“When it happened, I thought I was going to have to have surgery,” he said. “I’m glad that didn’t happen.”

While Malaki needs to get it going. He got great form but lacks confidence and aggressiveness (something Blake I’m not worried about). I liked it that they were giving him PG minutes and that could get him going with the ball in his hand instead of passively waiting for catch and shoot. I think it helped Lonnie somewhat when they tried to make him a facilitator. It wasn’t a natural fit but I think it helped his confidence somewhat. I’m hoping Malaki just learn to trust his shooters touch (while even missing). Just keep shooting, and moving without the ball.

Players purposely extend their leg to foulbait though

I can't wait for Blake to get back to the big club. This team needs some attitude and self-confidence so badly. And not like fake IG confidence, but real self-assuredness.

You want us to win? Because I’d just as soon he stay in Austin for a month or so.

Didn't Dejounte do the same thing? And wasn't it gone by the time he came back from the torn ACL?

I'm basing this on memory so I might be way off.

Somewhat torn on that- really like to see him in the bigs- but long term may be best to stay in Austin a while. He's got talents that can't be taught- but definitely has holes in his game that can be potentially corrected.

Our guys can't rebound or defend. Tim wouldn't win. It's more about just seeing him get some burn and seeing someone with some moxie, even as we lose.

He's like ten years old. I'd watch him play out his mistakes in San Antonio, but the arguments to leave him in Austin are fair.

Wesley produced 19 points, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot in the 127-107 loss at the G League Winter Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada. He went 5-of-16 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in 24 minutes.

his shooting efficiency has been ridiculously poor, but at least with the big boys he wont be asked to play that kind of role to be the do-it-all guy on offense. i love that they see him as a PG

It's the reason why many teams shied away from him. A lot of it is shot selection -- knowing what is a good shot or not -- but he's also erratic in his release. He rarely shoots the same way every time.

Yeah he has the right attitude and he has elite athleticism he just needs to work on the basics one of the things he definitely needs to stop is kicking his one leg out when jump shooting. He is a raw player but definitely the type of player you want to put time in investing in

A couple things I noticed after watching him play and some of the takes here seem a bit off.

I think he has decent touch in and around the basket just not good shooting mechanics or a good shooter.

I don’t think he’s an elite athlete but he has elite intangibles and potentially elite defense.

Kinda seems a little bit more athletic than say Magic Johnson who was arguably more athletic than he looked. Size and PG mind frame seem good in that same regard.

He doesn’t need to be a good shooter. Just a serviceable one. He could be a better version of Ben Simmons and as of right now he’s not afraid to shoot like Ben is.

He could be a game changer while only averaging 12-14. In 2 years we’ll see a significantly better shooter.

I think if you surrounded him with some shooters he would be very good he has the ability to beat his man sometimes pretty easily so if you do not clog the paint he can easily do damage.

He'll definitely be a vastly better shooter than Ben Simmons, who isn't even close to serviceable. Wesley has a lot of capacity and could become a good to very good shooter.

He is an elite athlete as far as burst and speed goes -- he quite easily blows by players. He does not have elite vertical pop, which is what people sometimes think is the only aspect of athleticism. He could be one of the fastest players in the league, potentially.

So, from an athleticism standpoint, sort of like Parker? Great horizontally, average vertically?

I was going to mention Parker. They're a bit different in their speed, but yeah. In fact, Sochan's athleticism is sort of horizontal more than vertical, too. I'd say Sochan has great lateral and sorta omni-lateral movement and shifting. From what I've seen, Wesley is sort of bull-ahead without a lot of swivel (yet), but has elite burst and stride. Parker was sort of more controlled and circuitous in his open-court quickness and sort of did it from a standstill.

Some good thoughts here. To clarify my point, his shooting form is awkward, including his stance. Lacks vertical pop which could be why he appears to have challenges at the rim, going back to college, which is what I simplified into “poor touch”.

But long arms, great instincts, gets in passing lanes, already showing good pnr and passing IQ. Tenacious. If he and Sochan both figure out their jump shots, they will be a great part of our future, at least for their infectious energy.

Some video around draft time from a guy much smarter than me pointed out a major reason why Wesley is so bad around the rim -- he takes off way too soon. It's true, you see it all the time. He takes off and glides toward the hoop. If there's any resistance, he's already under the rim and easily gets swatted.

Solutions include: recognizing when shotblockers are coming over, learn to create contact for fouls, learn to take off much closer to the rim so he doesn't lose elevation, or most likely start learning a floater. If he doesn't take off too soon/distant, he has a lot more options.

You want us to win? Because I’d just as soon he stay in Austin for a month or so.

My thoughts too. With all three of our first round picks showing some good promise, this team might win a lot of games down the stretch when other coaches and players have thrown in the towel. Play-in tournament in here we come.

Like 10 days ago, we had the 4th worst NBA net rating of all time. We could go all in, fuck up our draft position some, but there is no way in hell we make the play in. Pop continues to hold out players for untied shoelaces, or a hang nail. The tank is on.

Yeah, I kind of believe there's a secret sabotage going on. But I don't know if they'll super-tank like some teams will. I don't think the Spurs are as shitty as they were in that bad patch, but then there was a lot of suspicious DNPs.

Spurs will be recalling rookie guard Blake Wesley today after his stint with the Austin Spurs. He’ll be inactive tonight but could see action Friday night in Orlando. If so, it would be his first with the Spurs since he injured his knee in late October.

He’s officially available for tonight’s game against the Magic.

spurraider21

in summer league and now gleague, spurs have been giving Wesley the "go do everything on offense for us" role and its painfully clear he's not good enough for that. but in his limited action with the big boys, and a much more contained role, he looked reasonable

with Jones still having the starting role and Sochan/Richardson both up to the task to handle some backup duty, they dont have to thrust Wesley into anything he isn't ready for. ideally we find a suitor for Richardson and allow Wesley/Sochan to share those backup PG minutes

Blake Wesley is here in Orlando, but he won’t be available tonight. Basically a numbers game in that the Spurs need more bigs against Magic.

Too early. He’s just back from injury and still testing his game. I’m just happy he’s putting up numbers. And I don’t mind him staying awhile at Austin. I’m liking Branham pkaying backup PG for now to get him aggressive more with the ball in his hand, which I think he’s responding well.

basically a bunch of 3's

Thanks for the vid. It's just what I was looking for.

Wesley came down with his lower body rotated almost 90 degrees and his right foot well in front of his left on each three. The left foot was sideways each time on landing. This certainly looks unorthodox, but is it bad? More importantly, is it dangerous? With regards to future injury potential, that is.

The Truth #6

Shooting stance seems bad. Not sure about for injuries but if he isn’t already making jumpers consistently with that stance I have to think it’s part of the problem. But I’m not a shot analyst.

I didn’t turn on Lonnie because he wasn’t an All Star, I turned on him because he wasn’t a serviceable NBA player. His career net rtg when he left was-12, the deficit for every 100 possessions he was on the floor for 4 years.

That’s a bit disingenuous. Imagine having a net rating on a shitty team. The bottom line is that he’s a serviceable player and at this point he’s exceeded his draft position.

You can be on the same bad teams and have different net ratings. Most of the guys during the seasons he was here had slight negatives, -3 to -5. Derrick White and Dejounte had positive net ratings seasons while Lonnie was here. STs favorite whipping boy Bryn Forbes out performs him. In their two overlapping seasons, Forbes was -1 and -8, and his overall Spurs mark is -5.

Lonnie Walker was one of the worst, most atrocious defenders to ever lace up for the Silver and Black.

Not Primo’s game. Primo instead was getting stronger to backdown his smaller defender. So no need for comparison there.

Lol. Yes it was clear to anyone watching it wasn't his game, except PATFO.

He and Bassey were called up for last night’s game. Don’t know what their status is today.
