Since we are getting the Hornets protected (top 16?) pick this year via the Hawks trade, they really need to start winning more for us to get that pick. They basically need to be a borderline playoff team for it to convey. So for now… Go Hornets!

Does anyone know/remember what happens if the pick doesn’t convey this year what happens?

It rolls to the following year and the protection goes down a little bit.

The protection is 16,14,14. We probably won’t get it this year, which is fine. We have 3 rooks already, and I’m not sure this draft is anything extraordinary outside the lottery. 2024 would be best for the CHA pick, as in 2025 we already have the ATL pick, and the CHI pick 10,8,8 seems extremely likely to convey, giving us 3 picks in one year again.

win-win in fact best case scenario is to stagger that pick to 24 or later to more smoothly reload the new troops.

but considering potential trades of JR, Poeltl and maybe Doug there may be some vacant slots to fill after all so if it conveys that's cool too as I'm kinda eager to have multiple FRPs in another draft after how delightful the 2022 draft was with the 3x picks that were all solid.

Kinda wanna see what Spurs could do with multiple picks again since last draft was so well managed imo

You can't know that this much in advance, the movements up and down the board until the last few months leading to the draft are downright crazy, take any draft at this time and you'll find bold predictions that in hindsight look ridiculous. That's especially true outside the top ranked prospects. Hell, Jalen Williams was completely outside anyone's radar until the combine even for professional scouts that make a living out of tracking prospects, and Sam Presti admitted so in the press conference for OKC rookies. By march we should have a much clearer picture. For that I'm very skeptic of claims that a draft is deep or shallow this early, I remember people hyping up the 2021 draft that turned very underwhelming, and then selling short the 2022 class outside the top 3 which to me seemed ludicrous after watching many of them play. In any case, I'm just hoping that pick eventually conveys in the first round, which I'm not so sure of given its protections and Charlotte's state of affairs. Hope those fears prove unfounded, though.

Spurs should absolutely try to get a late first round pick in this draft, since it's one of the better drafts in recent years and it's almost a given someone will slip as usual. There's no way the Hornets pick conveys this year.

Not borderline -- the Hornets would have to make the playoffs. But not only make the playoffs, there would need to be two other teams who made the playoffs with a worse record. There are scenarios where the Hornets are the 7th seed in the East and the pick still doesn't convey. So ... pretty darn unlikely this season.

The lowest pick you can have after making the playoffs is 15. That basically means the Spurs need the Hornets to make the playoffs next season or the following season to get the pick. If LaMelo Ball takes another step, it probably happens, IMO.

The Hornets looks wretched. When your best players are Kelly Oubre and Mason Plumlee, that ain't good.

Their star PG is out, they lost miles, this is a good lottery pick year. No way the Hornet is gonna bust their balls to get into the PO to convey the pick to us. Forget about it this year.

I think this pick should be used as a way to upgrade for something better. Like in a hypothetical Lakers trade, Spurs send it out with the other pieces of the deal as a way to get a more lightly protected Lakers pick.

This is a good point.

Hornets lose again. Starting the soft tank early. In no hurry to get Ball and Hayward back on the court.

Actually the Hornets flaming out and getting a high pick might end up being better for us, as opposed to them hovering around the late lottery and making the wrong pick time and again, until the pick they owe us turns into 2nd rounders.

I agree. A high pick plus Ball coming back can certainly make them into a playoff team, which is exactly what we want next season or the season after.

I've given up on the possibility of the pick conveying this year.

Michael Jordan drafting, however... Granted, 2021 was kind of a turd of a draft, but they came away with James Bouknight and Kai Jones. Bouknight is getting PT but is struggling. Kai Jones can't find the floor. Mark Williams is putting up big stats in the G League from this last draft, though.
