This is interesting. I just think it's way too hard to predict.

My hope is that we don't settle for Kandi. The Spurs have stated that if the player they want is not available, they're not going to spend money just to spend it. I have a feeling that Kandi is no longer very high on the Spurs wish list. If he still ends up a Spur I'd be surprised.

My hope is that the Spurs order of pursuit is. . .

1. O'Neal
2. Brand
3. Kidd

If Kidd is signed, I hope that the Spurs trade Parker for a big.

If the Spurs are unable to secure any of those guys I hope they try and sign a veteran or two to one-year deals, and wait until 2004, and re-assess then.

I wouldn't be surprised to see multiple sign-and-trades involving other fairly hot mid-level commodities like Kenny Thomas this summer. Philly has way too many tweeners on their team, and a guy like Thomas is probably their most tradeable commodity.

I think Indiana is going to be forced to move some talent with high-priced guys like O'Neal, Miller and Miller on the roster. I haven't heard that Reggie is retiring. . .how much of a paycut is he going to take? Either O'Neal or the younger, whiter Miller will be gone I think.

I think Karl Malone's ego will keep him from signing with LA. He'd never be happy as the 3rd fiddle in a two-man band. Anyway, he and Andre Miller will make a decent tandem in Utah.

I believe the Clippers will implode this summer, as the Clippers always do, and other teams will raid their young talent. I think Miller will be gone, and probably one or two other players like Maggette, Odom or Kandi. But I'm not sure that even the Clippers would be dumb enough to let Brand go without a fight. I could see him sent off in a trade though, the Clippers like those draft picks you know, and the limited rookie salaries that come with it.

If I'm the Spurs I think I try to get a quick guage on O'Neal and Kidd as soon as they are able. If neither are gung-ho about being a Spur, then they should offer Brand a max-deal. If the Clippers match, then the Spurs should just try to fill holes until next season and Holt until 2004.

The Spurs could offer a 1-year deal that's very substantial to a player like Zoe, or PJ Brown. Even Derrick Coleman proved this year he has something left in the tank. How about platooning the 4 and 5 spots with Tim Duncan, Malik Rose, Kevin Willis, PJ Brown and Derrick Coleman? Not too bad if you ask me. I will guess that something like this is how the Spurs will shape up for the upcoming season.

BB, I hadn't looked at the Brand situation that way. If what you say is true, going after Brand would definitely back-fire if the Clips matched his offer, and the team's available funds aren't going to be what I had anticipated next year. I figured the Spurs would have the money to pursue a top-tier free agent in '04, but I'm sure you're right if you say they won't.

That kind of changes the urgency in doing it right THIS off-season, doesn't it?!



I'd much sooner have the Spurs get their man this year anyway. I don't think I could handle another year of speculation. The "Kobe to SA?" threads might drive me nuts.
