An estimated 1700 structures in Turkey were destroyed and hundreds are known to be dead already, in both countries. Aftershocks have reached as high as 6.6, and a tsunami has hit the coastline of Turkey and Syria. Turkey is estimating there will be around 11,000 deaths.

The vids of the destruction are mindblowing.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing at least 641 people. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.https://apnews.com/article/earthquake-shakes-turkey-b927808f6a5c54bdb669120faa40b7bc

Watch out for fake vids, some of the tsunami and building collapse post are attempts to go viral online. Happens every time.

Affected as in just they felt it? I was in a 7.1 but it didn't do any real damage in my area since the epicenter was ~100 miles away. If it would have hit in LA though would have been a very different story. Seems like it shook for fucking ever though.

The quake was felt in Cairo and Sarajevo.

It's log scale, so each whole number reflects a ten fold difference in measured amplitude. 7.8 is a lot stronger than 7.1.

Meh in San Antonio I felt that 5.4 earthquake between Odessa and El Paso a few months ago. Seems like media sensationalism to say some huge area the size of England was 'affected'

South-East the most poor. Rain & darkness caused panic.

I've been to Turkey 5 times, not this region.

Didn't say it wasn't, but OMG affecting an area the size of England is over the top.

Volatile part of the world in more ways than one. Guess that mother earth had to wait for ISIS and Covid to be over to do this to us tbh.

If it was that big and in populated areas Im thinking 6 figures dead.
The depth of the quake is also important as I understand it.
Also the type of material that gets shook.

I think there is more to it than just the scale number. For BB.
Diff wave types created by diff earthquakes... The Richter scale is apparently somewhat obsolete.

Whoa...

Should this be mistaken for compassion for people in other parts of the world?
In other words, you give a fk?

yeah, my mom banned me from tracking hurricanes for like a year as a small child in October 1998 when hurricane Mitch killed like 100k in Central America. I remember crying my little eyes out in front of the TV especially when they mentioned whole families and children drowning and perishing in the storm

I only hate liberals from like July to November of even numbered years

Rest of the time I'm more a compassionate right leaning moderate/normie

Yep, depth and ground composition are big factors

2010 chile had an 8.8, in my house only one picture frame fell.. a friend two blocks down had cracking in his walls and ceiling, as well as trees falling in his yard

Places where quakes aren't as frequent get more damage/deaths because construction isn't engineered to resist

Earthquakes are frequent in that area of the world, it's just corruption and poor construction is even more frequent.

Such a tragedy. Why can't these quakes eat up Erdopig though? No silverlinings either.

The GOP announced they were deeply saddened that the loss of life in Syria and Turkey wasn't caused by drones or bombs.

Sorry about your countrymen but I doubt anyone here trusts you enough to click on any link you post. You got maybe 10 active individuals here including Fuzzy Lumpkins' therapist. your chance of getting funding for your cause is pretty low. Best wishes though.

They might yet. His government's response has so far been underwhelming.

Now the real aftershock is coming.

Anger directed towards the government.
The government arresting looters and anyone associated with construction.
The Army sitting around.
And now it’s not deemed safe for many relief groups to try to recover bodies and help wounded and homeless.
25,000 deaths and 80,000 injured. This will go way up but they can’t even get to people.
This is truly horrible.

And their president will make no sacrifices to get things right. He is just trying to arrest people to blame. No worried about helping the citizens who are experiencing this tragedy. People are going to die who escaped getting buried just through horrible surrounding circumstances. Totally not ready to help their own citizens.
