A true giant for Spurs fans (and UT fans also).
:flag:
Man, I just bought a truck from his dealership on Saturday. I asked about him and was told he wasn't doing too well, but I didn't expect it. What can you say, he left a large legacy in this city.

RIP Red. Thank you for bringing the Spurs to San Antonio.
Actually met him at race at Churchill Downs several years ago, was huge into horse racing as an FYI and actually talked to him about the Spurs for a few minutes(Had on a Spurs hat lol) and he came across as a genuinely nice guy.
RIP and as others have said, appreciate what you did for this organization.

The man was a great Texan, San Antonian, sponsor and/or owner of so many enterprises that benefited the city and State as well as a super philanthropist. He started as a car salesman and grew into a hugely successful businessman. You can't replace a man like Red McCombs. RIP.

Both- though I always got the feeling Drossos was more involved with how things ran,
McCombs sold off his share not long after they entered the NBA, but bought the team in the late 80s.
Made some really questionable decisions. That said he probably ensured it stayed in SA.

It's amazing how much better Drossos was as an owner than billionaire McCombs. Drossos went out and paid for the Spurs to get Artis Gilmore and Mike Mitchell when they were struggling with the Lakers. Never got them over the hump but it was a legit effort to bring a title to San Antonio. McCombs was too cheap to get us Barkley and let a budding star in Strickland walk to be replaced with Shitty Del Negro and almost traded David Robinson because he didn't want to pay him. McCombs was the cheapest owner this team ever had despite being the only one that was ridiculously wealthy.

Why? Supposed to act like a bad person is a saint just because he died? His biggest legacy is trashing this nation's media and political discourse, not some car dealerships and a sports team.

Spot on.
I met Jon Voight on the set of Varsity Blues (my brother had a bit part). He couldn't have been a nicer more impressive person - as opposed to Mr. Vander Beek. My mom was practically in love with the guy after he spent 15 minutes walking around with us.. And it was before he had started speaking his mind on Fox routinely...think Obama broke something in the right wing.
Now I'm ashamed I once had positive views about that man given what a total asshat he turned out to be and how he peddled in racist, conspiratorial, anti-democratic rhetoric. He too is leaving the world in a worse place than it was when he entered it. Especially ppl like Red though by facilitating a station that pumps our literal lies to the sheep ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. Facts no longer have meaning because of radio stations like WOAI and Fox. We're furked beyond repair because of that shit.

Political doesn't cover bad managements of what should have been a golden decade before the golden decade. Its ironic the cheapness let us tank because the team couldn't survive a spate on injury to the top talent. Pop and holt didnt have to start from the bottom but thats damning with faint praise.
Red mcolm wasn't the worse franchise owner of the nba and NFL, but his style of old boy gentlemen management doesn't lead to sucsess. And seeing the amazing work pop, RC, holt puts red in a bad light. Holt is cheap and conservative and that cheapness hurt at times, but it was far far better. I guess they did give Malone the best rapist award this week so we can also say Red was a good person lol.

Holt actually spent money to keep a good team together unlike McCombs; Holt was an amazing owner. Losing Scola hurt but that's the only time Holt ever really got cheap. If McCombs was still owner he would have let Tony walk, probably Manu too, and then Tim would have gone to a franchise committed to putting out a winner. Peter Holt along with Angelo Drossos are Spurs legends.

https://www.nexstardigital.com/national-products/
Same 3:00 AM talking points as any "independent"/liberal station. Remarkable that so many still think that the way the newscasters politically emote during their airtime differentiates the underlying programming. Cornbread is still cornbread even if the recipe varies slightly from house to house.
Regardless, RIP Red and thanks for bringing the Spurs to our little city. Your investment served as the foundation for five championships, a consistently excellent brand, and some of the highest quality basketball the world has ever seen.

Clear Channel's Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck aren't a different recipe of cornbread. Nor is WOAI's Joe Pags for that matter. Those guys pump/pumped out lies and conspiracies. Political banter is far afield from straight up BS paraded as a different POV. And quite frankly, you equating them underscores how dangerous it is, because its so ubiquitous now, you don't even recognize how destabilizing it is.
Nothing matters when we collectively lose our basis in a universal undisputed set of facts. When facts become damned, there is no keeping people together. It's precisely why you have the right wing already starting to pine for a "national divorce" (see MTG's tweet) or worse yet, civil separation by any means necessary (see twitter on pretty much any day). Those local talk show hosts across this country spew BS (like Democratic politicians are groomers/pedophiles and have secret lairs where they perform said acts, want your child to have gender reassignment surgery at will, are in cahoots with dark forces, want undocumented workers voting, etc, etc, etc.) from their microphones daily.
And a bunch of that local radio show amplification of that filth originated with stations like WOAI, then Clear Channel where abominations like Rush gained national reach with their voluminous mouth diarrhea.
One last thing, that stuff was far from being just 3AM talking points. In fact that type of insanity permeated our national discourse and metastasized into being the predominant "talking points" of the Republican base voter.

Man, right and left wing conspiracy theories have always existed and will always exist.
What's sad is we live in a world, more than ever, where the only thing that matters to people is if a person is/was red or blue. I mean, how much of our lives are spent thinking about politics? And we reduce people and their contributions to this world to whether they meet this classification of red or blue. I mean, sometimes I think Pop goes off the reservation in interviews about "basketball", but when he dies, I don't think that his life and contributions should depend on how one feels about his views Columbus Day. I would like to think that the measure of one's life means more than that.
Texas was radically Republican well before WOAI and to be honest, San Antonio is mostly a democrat city anyway. And people believe what they want to believe. Doesn't matter if they hear it on Fox News or WOAI, some people are going to think Trump had the election stolen from him. The same is true with MSNBC and CNN and people that think Hillary lost because of Russia or that Stacey Abrams won Georgia. And I know it could have been played on other radio stations, but I'm glad I got to hear some of the games on WOAI when I couldn't watch them on TV or in person.

Sorry. Simply won't let you boil this down to both-sidesism.
There are times and situations wherein such an argument is germane, but this isn't one of them. One side is quite literally gunning for separation and division based entirely on a false set of facts. One side stormed the Capitol. One side is willing to usurp the Constitution. One side is oblivious to reality and unwilling to listen to facts, whether they be scientific, electoral, and situational. One side is increasingly authoritarian and radicalized by the rhetoric its elected leaders. Don't even try to deny this.
And Pop, like him or not, cannot be equated ever to the negative aspects that Red is responsible for, notably promoting and profiting from muddying the national dialogue with lies.
So I repeat, I'm not going to demure to folks, moving forward, when they attempt to dismiss those behaviors with a simplistic both-sidesism denial. One side is to blame for this. And Red made it worse. Those are facts.

To be honest, I don't really care what you think anymore than you care what I think. They are opinions and I hardly think that any one person is responsible for what today, in my opinion, has taken both parties to the extreme. And there is bullshit on both sides of the political spectrum. I'm not excusing storming the capital building. That was a horrid event and I think Trump did more to damage the integrity of the institutions of this country than any other politician in American history other than the Southerners that tried to succeed from the Union. But if you think that the far left isn't just as capable of doing the same thing, then you are kidding yourself. I mean, there are armed men consumed by leftist agendas and ideology that are showing up to conservative Supreme Court Justices' homes with guns.

Yes, a right wing media cult like Sinclair. Like Fox. Like OANN. Like Blaze. Like Clear Channel/iHeart media. The new and improved, next generation of propaganda pushers. This country is already irreparably broken precisely because of their nonsense. There is no longer any responsible right-leaning media. They all are awash in lies. Most frighteningly, they increasingly aren't even beholden to their corporate masters anymore, like the Dems are. They force the advertizers to bow to the lies because of the sheer size and buying power of their demographic.

Sinclair owns those local stations, and most are fox stations. But thats besides the point. Again, the point is the lies that create automatons that dont question what they're told yet think they're patriots. Often draping themselves in the flag. Etc.

We're talking past each other here, so I'll try to reiterate the point:
Left vs. Right doesn't matter, and . It's a trap to divide us. This division is performed by allowing us to emote our grievances through partisan news programming in a legislatively fruitless but socially destructive manner, while meaningful policy decisions (bailouts, war, corporate welfare, sickcare, domestic surveillance, etc.) are decided behind closed doors.

There is a bunch in this part with which I agree, primarily that if ppl would wake the eff up, they'd realize the rich and powerful have us at each other's throats.
But there's still a larger point of contention here and that is that one side is continually and blindly feeding at that trough of willful ignorance, such that they do the bidding of their masters.
One party continually gives us policy based on those lies and has led us, inexorably, to this moment. A moment where a sitting congresswoman recently called for a national dovorce and people on twitter not so subtly hint at civil war, daily. Where they can be outraged by a clearly proven set of lies to storm the Capitol. Where millions of ppl believe in their gut that Democratic lawmakers have child sacrifice and pedophilia dungeons, or that JFK Jr. was going to come back and serve as Trump's VP. Etc.
And they do it while voting for those same ppl election after election that slash the tax rate of our wealthiest Americans while they eek out a survivalist existence on, as you say, sickcare.
And the media that started the topic on this thread, has its roots in manipulation and disingenuousness through local radio and corporate media, like Sinclair, ClearChannel, Fox, Blaze, etc.
And much of that power they have comes down to bills enacted in Congress, largely passed on partisan lines, and affirmed in very conservative, partisan court decisions.
Thus, I wholeheartedly reject your conclusion this is a both-sidesism problem. Dems and Democratic politicians are FAAAAAR from perfect and you'll never see me say otherwise, but blame for our current state and future trajectory rests with one party and their zombified brains.

Meh you're so wildly uniformed you attacked someone on the left for being in a cult by posting an example of straight right wing propaganda from a disgusting company called Sinclair, thinking you were scoring points against ABC, NBC, and CBS like the major networks are the ones producing this local news garbage you posted. Bothsides apologists like you are almost universally hard right wing because there is no defending their side that uses culture war rabble rousing to manufacture consent for keeping taxes low on the rich. I don't have any problem with people walking on McCombs grave for the reasons already mentioned. I did the same fucking thing when Bud Adams died. If you a piece of shit alive you are a piece of shit dead. I'm not going to sit here and act like you were some great human just because you stopped breathing.

Red gave us 20 games of Jerry Tarkanian as coach. At least he had enough good sense to fire him.

PHI was willing to trade Barkley to us for not much in the way of player return. Red didn’t want to pay him, so he vetoed the trade.
Good trivia...never knew this. That would have been awesome to have Barkley here, even non-prime Barkley. Wonder if he would have begun his big ole women in SA shtick even earlier...

I’m of the opinion that Barkley just isn’t the guy you can win the title with. The suns came close because they surrounded him with shooters but even that team needed 64 FTs to just get to the finals. Barkley holds on the ball way too much, is not a good player off ball and a mediocre shooter. His defense is one of the worst amongst the top 30 players of all time. Him and robinson would not have worked.
And I love Barkley.

Would have still been a better fit than putting Shitty Del Negro next to David tbh

Supposedly for Terry Cummings and Willie Anderson. And then of course Cummings blew out his knee in a pickup game that summer after Barkley had been traded to Phoenix and TC's career as a productive player was done. Went from borderline allstar to end of the bench scrub overnight with that injury.

Them fighting words. Del negro led the spurs to 50+ wins year after year and then robinson blew it away by being soft in the playoffs.

Vinod Del Negro sucked ass, and was one of the reasons the Spurs always flamed out in the playoffs.

I'd clap back but I'm just happy the Spurs found a way to drop this game in Utah after leading by 10 at the half, was getting nervous for a minute. Should have had faith though, this team plays defense like the roster is twelve Shitty Del Negros.
