Barlow has one. Mamu has one. Here's a bulletin board thread for Philadelphia Sixers cast-off, Brooklyn-bred former St. John's Johnnie, and current holder of the most points in a game for a two-way contract rookie ever.

Does he have the #1 and #2 spots on the two-way single game scoring record now?

That would make sense. I think it's just for rookies, though.

I liked him in the second round a few years ago. Glad he finally made it here.

He’s not a rookie. He and Justin were in the 2021 draft class. Both of them spent the majority of las year in the gleague, with short stints in the NBA.

I though Justin went in 2021 then Julian went the year after??

Julian is a rookie. He went undrafted last summer.

I’m trying to think what his archetype/ceiling might be for the Spurs…Gary Neal?

Nea was more of a shooting guard. Champagnie is a small forward. In Spurs terms? I'd maybe say Michael Finley without the athleticism.

Article from "Hoops Prospect"
Champagnie’s No. 1 skill clearly is his shooting. He is a high-volume three-point shooter who attempts 6.2 per game. The majority come from catch-and-shoot situations as a floor spacer on the court. Thus far this season, he has eight games of four or more three-point makes and has the fourth most made three-pointers in the conference. Champagnie’s intrigue as a shooter is bolstered by the simplicity of his form and the lightning speed he is able to get the shot off.
The Brooklyn-native’s smooth jumper looks gorgeous when coming off down screens and curling into the mid-range. His impressive height at a little under 6-foot-8 with shoes is the cherry on top of his shooting form since he is not easily bothered by shorter players and those who are late to contest. Champagnie is willing to shoot over someone who may be draped on him without a dribble as well, arguably one of the best shooters in this year’s NBA draft class with a hand in his face. When creating his own shot, he prefers stepping back off his right foot to the left side from either mid-range or deep.
Champagnie is arguably one of the best shooters in this draft class, although his percentages are lower now than what they were last season. This season, he is shooting 35 percent from three-point range compared to 38 percent in 2020-21. In 15 games against conference opponents this season, he is shooting 29 percent from beyond the arc, a drastic decline from the 40.3 percent that he shot the previous year. It would be in his best interest to somewhat clean up the drop-off in efficiency if he wants to make a case for having an early second-round grade from NBA teams. However, it would not be smart to write off the 20-year-old as a below-average shooter due to the percentage declines.
On a side note his Twin brother plays for the Celtics....

Maybe Rogers Mason Jr as a comp?

Nah Roger Mason didn’t block nor rebound. Julian has shown he could actually defend. If he improves, he could be a McBuckets upgrade at SF with defense. An inch taller than Danny Green at 6’7” same wingspan 6’10”. Could be a 3 and D guy.

Philly really dumping prospects
Bassey, now Champagnie
Of course they're in a different place and don't necessarily have development time

Yeah they do not need picks they should be trading picks for a good vet that could fit into there system

They dumped Isaiah Joe who has been showing promise for OKC.

To some extent I was trying to be charitable
But Doc has a long track record of NOT developing young players
Champagnie seems to fit this profile of late round/undrafted who succeeded
They usually are really good shooters who get into a good situation

Yeah I think making it into NBA for the vast majority is 50% talent and 50% falling to the right team/situation.

Can he become the next Danny Green?
Hot take, just because I like to stir shit up: if he keeps this up in the regular season, he's a better fit in the long run than Keldon Johnson, tbh.

Keldon is a really good shooter. We lose sight of that.

Is he, though? He shot a below average % from 3 in 2 out of 3 full seasons. And even if his shot is for real, his defense isn't. I see his future being more of a guy that puts up pts coming off the bench, but not overly impactful on a winning team, tbh.

Maybe he can be an OKC Harden equivalent for us off the bench.

He should be the McDermott replacement tbh. Although McDermott is like the only real vet on our team, the Spurs could deal his expiring contract around the trade deadline and let Champagnie take his spot. Julien moves well off the ball and can fill it up from 3 as well, while being a way better defender

I was just thinking this. If you squint real hard, you can kinda see Harden in the way he plays.

Harden was always a p-n-r maestro, while Champagnie is an off ball shooter/scorer.

Is he championship good?
Would you design plays for him in the last seconds of big playoff games?

No, but the Spurs still need to find that type of player somewhere and I don't see Keldon being that player.

Yeah I don't get the Harden comparisons at all. Champagnie is much more finisher than facilitator.

I have to give kudos to Champ. His defense is getting better, even guarding Markkanen and denying him to get to Lauri’s sweet spots. I know Vassell will eventually get the SL back, but Champ is for sure making a case for himself. Him in the SL is acting pretty balance. Besides it allows more touches for Castle without Vassell in the SL. And Vassell, Keldon and Sochan can do real damage against other teams 2nd unit. It’s not going to happen, but it makes one think with the way Champ is playing defense.
