Protesters in southern Syria smash statue as they mark 2015 assassination of anti-government leader
BEIRUT (AP) — Hundreds of angry protesters in southern Syria smashed the statue of Syria’s late president on Monday as they they marked the 2015 assassination of a prominent anti-government Druze leader.
The protests in the province of Sweida, where the Druze community represents the majority of the population, have entered their third week. The demonstrations were initially driven by surging inflation and the war-torn country’s spiraling economy but quickly shifted focus, with marchers calling for the fall of President Bashar Assad’s government.
Monday’s protest took place in the provincial capital, also called Sweida, where angry men and woman called for the downfall of Assad’s government. Some smashed the statue of Assad’s late father and predecessor, Hafez Assad.
Several demonstrators marched up to the building of the local branch of the social security and tore down a giant poster of Bashar Assad, according to videos circulated on social media and opposition activists.

The uprising in Sweida will continue until the regime changes in Syria
Since August 20, protests and a general strike in the southern governorate of Sweida, which has a population of approximately 770,000, have persisted. Protesters have closed the headquarters of the Baath Party and removed pictures of dictator Bashar al-Assad from the streets and buildings of the city.
These demonstrations call for a change in the Syrian regime and the full implementation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2254, which put forth a road map for the peace process in Syria, including forming a transitional governing body with full powers. Protesters also advocate for political, civil, and human rights for all Syrians: freedom, dignity, justice, equality, the release of detainees, and the ability to live decently, especially given the deteriorating economic situation that has become unbearable.
The regime has implemented failed economic policies and has been unable to secure the needs of its citizens. Additionally, the Syrian people believe that the regime is not interested in integrating a political solution that would lead to a new reality for Syrians—one that would allow for reconstruction and the lifting of sanctions. This conviction is bolstered by the fact that the regime is currently granting contracts that allow Russia and Iran to access the country’s resources. Meanwhile, the Syrian people are struggling.
Additionally, the Assad regime and ruling class are drowning in funds looted from the people through a deep network of corruption, which is compounded by the destruction of infrastructure since the beginning of severe military repression in 2011. The regime has displaced nearly half of the Syrian population, killed hundreds of thousands, and detained over a hundred thousand—many of whom have been tortured to death. Despite this dark history looming overhead, Syrians still felt compelled to take to the streets in Sweida to demand regime change: the only practical solution to ending the humanitarian catastrophe they face.
It may be unexpected to witness this scene after all the suppression and war crimes committed by the Assad regime in Syria. However, it signifies that the desire for change in Syria still exists within the Syrian people.

France issues arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad
Paris (AFP) – France has issued an international arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accused of complicity in crimes against humanity over chemical attacks in 2013, a judicial source and plaintiffs in the case said Wednesday.
The judicial source told AFP Assad was also suspected of complicity in war crimes for the attacks, blamed by the opposition on the regime, that killed more than 1,400 people near Damascus in August 2013.
International warrants were also issued for the arrests of Assad's brother Maher, the de-facto chief of a Syrian elite military unit, and two armed forces generals.
The Paris court's unit concerned with crimes against humanity has been investigating the chemical attacks since 2021.
France claims worldwide jurisdiction for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The probe followed a legal complaint filed by the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) NGO, lawyers' association Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI) and the Syrian Archive, a body documenting human rights violations in Syria.

Iran Begins to Evacuate Military Officials and Personnel From Syria
Iran began to evacuate its military commanders and personnel from Syria on Friday, according to regional officials and three Iranian officials, in a sign of Iran’s inability to help keep President Bashar al-Assad in power as he faces a resurgent rebel offensive.
Among those evacuated to neighboring Iraq and Lebanon were top commanders of Iran’s powerful Quds Forces, the external branch of the Revolutionary Guards Corps, the officials said.
The move signaled a remarkable turn for Mr. al-Assad, whose government Iran has backed throughout Syria’s 13-year civil war, and for Iran, which has used Syria as a key route to supply weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Guards personnel, some Iranian diplomatic staff, their families, and Iranian civilians were also being evacuated, according to the Iranian officials, two of them members of the Guards, and regional officials. Iranians began to leave Syria on Friday morning, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue.
Evacuations were ordered at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, and at bases of the Revolutionary Guards, the Iranian and regional officials said. At least some of the embassy staff has departed.

Syrian government falls in stunning end to 50-year rule of Assad family
The Syrian government fell early Sunday in a stunning end to the 50-year rule of the Assad family after a sudden rebel offensive sprinted across government-held territory and entered the capital in 10 days.
Syrian state television aired a video statement by a group of men saying that President Bashar Assad has been overthrown and all detainees in jails have been set free
The man who read the statement said the Operations Room to Conquer Damascus, an opposition group, called on all opposition fighters and citizens to preserve state institutions of “the free Syrian state.”
The statement emerged hours after the head of a Syrian opposition war monitor said Assad had left the country for an undisclosed location, fleeing ahead of insurgents who said they had entered Damascus following the remarkably swift advance across the country.
Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali said the government was ready to “extend its hand” to the opposition and turn its functions over to a transitional government.

The UN reported 10,000 persons arbitrarily detained between mid-March and late-June 2011;[35]: 5 a year later that number had more than doubled, though the true number of detainees may have been far higher.[38]: 11 [40]: 12 At the notorious Seidnaya jail, north of Damascus, 2,500 military officers and lesser ranks were being held after they disobeyed orders or attempted desertion.[43] Human Rights Watch documented more than 20 different methods of torture used against detainees, including: prolonged and severe beatings, often with objects such as batons and wires; painful stress positions; electrocution; burning with car battery acid; sexual assault; pulling out fingernails; mock execution; and sexual violence.[40]: 18–19 Many were held in disgusting and cruelly overcrowded conditions; many who needed medical assistance were denied it, and some consequently died.[40]: 14–17
Human Rights Watch accused the government and Shabiha of using civilians as human shields when they advanced on opposition-held areas.[44] A UN report confirmed this, saying soldiers had used children as young as eight, detaining and killing children afterwards. The UN added the Syrian Government as one of the worst offenders on its annual "list of shame".[45] In May 2012, Al Arabiya aired leaked footage of a man being tortured in a government detention centre in Kafranbel.[46]
In response to these violations, the UN Human Rights Council passed a condemnatory resolution. It also demanded that Syria cooperate with a UN investigation into the abuses, release all political prisoners, and allow independent monitors to visit detention facilities.[47]
The charity Save the Children conducted interviews in refugee camps with Syrian civilians who had fled the fighting, and released a report in September 2012 containing many accounts of detention, torture and summary execution, as well as other incidents such as the use of civilians as human shields, allegedly including tying children onto advancing tanks so that rebel forces would not fire upon them.[48]
...
A 2016 Human Rights Watch (HRW) report stated that pro-Assad forces deliberately carried out indiscriminate attacks against civilian population through aerial bombing. Between February 2014 and January 2015, Human Rights Watch reports that "at least 450 major damage sites" in Syria "showed damage consistent with barrel bomb detonations". A local Syrian group estimates that in the first year after UN resolution 2139 was passed, aerial barrel bomb attacks killed 6,163 civilians in Syria, including 1,892 children. HRW report stated that the Assad government deployed toxic chemicals in numerous barrel bomb attacks between March to May 2015.[63] Pro-Assad forces also imposed forced starvation on civilian populations by besieging numerous residential areas.[63] According to a UN investigation, in September 2016 the Syrian air force dropped barrel bombs from helicopters on a United Nations humanitarian aid convoy at Urum al-Kubra headed to Aleppo. The bombs were followed by rocket fire from jets, and strafing of survivors with machine guns, killing 14 aid workers. In a report issued 1 March 2017, the United Nations found the attack was "meticulously planned" and "ruthlessly carried out"—and because it was deliberate, a war crime.[65][66]
According to three eminent international lawyers in the 2014 Syrian detainee report[67] Syrian government officials could face war crimes charges in the light of a huge cache of evidence smuggled out of the country showing the "systematic killing" of about 11,000 detainees. Most of the victims were young men and many corpses were emaciated, bloodstained and bore signs of torture. Some had no eyes; others showed signs of strangulation or electrocution. Experts say this evidence is more detailed and on a far larger scale than anything else that had yet emerged from the 34-month crisis.[68][69]
According to a report by Amnesty International, published in November 2015, the Syrian government had forcibly disappeared more than 65,000 people since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War.[70] According to a report in May 2016 by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 60,000 people have been killed through torture or died from dire humanitarian conditions in Syrian government jails since March 2011.[71]
...
The Ba'athist Syrian government has deployed chemical warfare as a systematic military strategy in the Syrian civil war, and is estimated to have committed over 300 chemical attacks, targeting civilian populations throughout the course of the conflict.[78][79] As of 2023, at least nine separate investigations conducted by both the UN and the OPCW have concluded that the Assad government carried out several chemical weapons attacks.[80] Investigation conducted by the GPPi research institute documented 336 confirmed attacks involving chemical weapons in Syria between 23 December 2012 and 18 January 2019. The study attributed 98% of the total verified chemical attacks to the Syrian Arab Armed Forces. Approximately 90% of all attacks had occurred after the Ghouta chemical attack in August 2013.[81][82]

Physician Annie Sparrows believes an explanation for the killing is that the Syrian government viewed doctors as dangerous, seeing their ability to heal rebel fighters and civilians in rebel-held areas as a "weapon" against the government. Over the 2.5 years, doctors, nurses, dentists, and pharmacists who provide medical care to civilians in contested areas have been arrested and detained; paramedics have been tortured and used as human shields, ambulances have been targeted by snipers and missiles; medical facilities have been destroyed; the pharmaceutical industry devastated. In 2011, there were more than 30,000 doctors in Syria. More than 16,000 doctors fled, and many of those left were in hiding. More than ninety were assassinated for doing their jobs and at least 36 paramedics, in uniform on authorized missions, were killed by Syrian military snipers or shot dead at checkpoints.[101]
As of August 2016, more than 200 medical facilities had been attacked by the government and its allies since the start of the war, and according to The Economist, "Experts reckon that no previous war has witnessed such widespread, systematic targeting of hospitals and medical workers."[102]
The 2019–2020 UN HRC report for the first time directly accused Russian Air Force of "indiscriminate attacks in civilian areas" in connection to bombing of refugee shelter in Haas and market place in Ma’arrat al-Nu’man in summer 2019, and described them as "amounting to the war crime".[103]

ISIS, Osama.. they all look like innocent choirboys next to Assad. There is a reason that almost no Syrians were willing to fight for him.
Peace might not come to Syria and maybe it goes back to fractured civil war, but the people of Syria have showed they want to end the brutality and get rid of their dictator.
And that gives hope for better future. Every fallen dictator is worth celebrating.

Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has landed in Moscow after fleeing from opposition rebels who closed in on Damascus today, according to Russia 24.
The state-owned TV channel cited anonymous sources in its report, adding that Assad has requested asylum in Russia. Two other Russian news outlets, TASS and Interfax, also reported that Assad arrived in Moscow with his family, citing Kremlin sources.
TASS and RIA Novosti, another Russian state news agency, reported that Assad’s request for asylum was granted for “humanitarian reasons.”

Assad tells Putin he won’t flee like Ukraine leader
Embattled president, said to be ‘in top athletic form,’ predicts civil war will be over by the end of the year
By AFP and ToI Staff 7 April 2014, 10:58 pm
A former Russian prime minister who recently met Bashar Assad said Monday that the Syrian president told him he would not flee like the deposed Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.
“The Syrian president told me: ‘Tell Putin that I am no Yanukovych and that I will not go,'” Sergei Stepashin told reporters in Moscow after meeting the Syrian president last week.
Assad was referring to Moscow-backed Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted by a pro-European popular uprising in February and fled to Russia.
“Unlike Yanukovych, he has no enemies in his inner circle… and he certainly knows what he is doing,” Stepashin said.

"The heart of the matter is that Iran’s regional influence significantly diminishes as the resistance groups (which are largely Shi’ite) become rudderless and disillusioned. This not only works to the advantage of Israel but also triggers a profound shift in the balance of forces regionally, which will have resonance for the current conflicts in the Greater Middle East as a whole in a long term perspective — Gaza, Lebanon and even as far away as Central Asia and South Asia. The bottom line is that the genie of al-Qaeda is out of the bottle, finally, and there is no stopping its pan-Islamic agenda. "

The US is considering removing the al-Qaeda offshoot Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the list of US-designated terror organizations after the group led the offensive that ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The Washington Post reported that US officials are in contact with HTS (https://archive.vn/YsT40)and other groups involved in the offensive. One US official said the Biden administration was doing a “real-time assessment” on whether or not HTS should be removed from the list of foreign terrorist organizations.
POLITICO reported (https://www.politico.com/newsletters/national-security-daily/2024/12/09/do-syrias-liberators-still-deserve-the-terrorist-label-00183727) there is a “furious debate” among US officials about the issue. “There is a huge scramble to see if, and how, and when we can delist HTS,” one official said.
HTS’s leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, also has a $10 million US bounty on his head. Middle East Eye reported (https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/us-officials-discussed-merits-removing-bounty-hts-leader-abu-mohammad-jolani) that US officials are debating the “merit” of keeping the bounty in place. An Arab official told the outlet that the debate has divided the Biden administration.
Julani was the founder of al-Nusra Front, the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria. In 2016, Julani attempted to rebrand al-Nusra by changing its name and claiming to cut ties with al-Qaeda. In 2017, HTS was formed by merging al-Nusra and several other Islamist groups.
Julani is now portraying himself as a moderate, and President Biden has said he likes what he’s hearing from the former al-Qaeda leader. “We’ve taken notes of statements by leaders of this revolution in recent days, and they’re saying the right things now, but as they take on greater responsibility, we will assess not just their words but their actions,” Biden said on Sunday in a speech celebrating the overthrow of Assad.
Removing HTS from the terror list could allow the US to provide significant aid to an HTS-led government.

Battered corpses show the horrors of life and death under Syria’s Assad (https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/12/middleeast/syria-hospital-victims-clarissa-ward-intl-latam/index.html)
Damascus, Syria
CNN
—
The bruised and battered bodies inside the morgue of Mujtahid Hospital are hard to look at — tangible evidence of the brutal regime of toppled Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.
But crowds of desperate people wait to see them, hoping finally for an answer to what happened to a loved one.
“Where are they?” pleads one woman. “My mother, she’s been missing for 14 years, where is she? Where is my brother, where is my husband, where are they?”
The 35 or so bodies were found in a military hospital in the Syrian capital of Damascus, days after the regime fell. They are believed to be among the last victims of Assad. A man points to their tattered clothing and suggests they were detainees at the notorious Saydnaya prison.

US and Turkish imperial ambitions clashing in Syria
"We understand Türkiye's legitimate right to go after a designated terrorist organization,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters, adding that Washington continues to designate the PKK as a terrorist organization.
When pressed by Anadolu about the YPG, the Syrian offshoot of the PKK, which both Türkiye and the US designated as a terrorist organization, Miller avoided the question, saying: “I would speak with respect to the PKK.”
"We have designated the PKK, and we respect their right to go after that organization," he added.
Noting that Syria is currently in a "fragile" state, Miller added: "We don't want to see any party take an action to pursue their own unilateral interests over the broader interests of the Syrian people."
Miller also defended the US’s partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are led by the YPG, stating that the SDF plays an important role in countering Daesh/ISIS.
"It is in the interest of Türkiye, in the interest of the Syrian people and all countries in the region that ISIS not rear its head again, that the ISIS fighters who are being held in SDF custody not be released," he said.
Miller highlighted the ongoing engagement with Turkish officials, saying “it is an extremely difficult issue, but we continue to engage with our Turkish counterparts.”
Asked why the US does not consider cooperation with its NATO ally Türkiye instead of the YPG to combat Daesh/ISIS, he said: “We have been discussing this with our NATO ally and trying to come to the best path forward.”
US affirms Türkiye’s right to go after PKK but dodges questions on YPG (https://www.aa.com.tr/en/americas/us-affirms-turkiye-s-right-to-go-after-pkk-but-dodges-questions-on-ypg/3426286)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has more than doubled the number of its forces in Syria to fight the Islamic State group — a dramatic increase that the Pentagon revealed Thursday, acknowledging that the added troops have been there for months or even more than a year.
The U.S. had said for years that there were about 900 troops in Syria, but Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, acknowledged there were roughly 2,000 there now.
The Pentagon was asked repeatedly about the U.S. presence in Syria in the wake of the chaotic overthrow of Syrian President Bashar Assad on Dec. 8. It did not disclose the increase and instead kept repeating the 900 figure.

Mass grave containing thousands of bodies discovered in Aleppo
Syrian police have found a mass grave containing thousands of bodies after a citizen informed authorities that he had witnessed the burial of hundreds of bodies in it, an officer in the Aleppo Police Command said yesterday.
Police, he added, are waiting for specialised committees to take command of the site and recover the bodies.
The Ministry of Interior in the Syrian caretaker government issued a statement saying: “A resident of Aleppo informed the police command of a mass grave containing hundreds of bodies.”
It added that the commander of the Aleppo Governorate Police, Brigadier General Ahmed Latouf, went to the site “to investigate the case, and the Civil Defence teams were notified to go to the location. An attempt will be made later to determine the identity of the bodies through DNA testing.”
Numerous mass graves have been uncovered since the fall of the Assad regime on 8 December. The city of Al-Qutayfah, 70 kilometres north of the capital Damascus, contains the largest mass grave discovered so far, with reports that tens of thousands of people were buried there.
After the fall of the regime there have been growing demands to reveal the fate of those forcibly disappeared in Syria, whose numbers are estimated at more than 100,000.

Israel bombing or taking whatever it wants in Syria
Al Mayadeen reported on 2 January that Israeli troops have now reached the Al-Mantara Dam in the Quneitra countryside, the largest dam in southern Syria, adding that Israel has seized control of the six most strategic bodies of water in the south.
Israel's recent expansion (https://thecradle.co/articles/israel-threatens-residents-of-south-syria-as-troops-expand-occupation) in Syria, which began immediately after the fall of the Assad government, has seen invading troops seize precious water sources such as the Al-Wahda Dam on the Yarmouk River Basin and others. Syrian and Israeli sources, as well as Carmel News citing an Iranian source, reported last month that Israel now controls 30 percent of Syria's water supply and 40 percent of Jordan's.
“The occupation's control over the Al-Wahda Dam, which is located on the Jordanian border, is a threat to Jordan, because it was the biggest beneficiary of this dam,” Al Mayadeen’s correspondent said on Thursday.

Trump talked out of both sides of his mouth on Syria last time too
US forces killed a senior leader of al-Qaeda-linked Hurras al-Din in an airstrike in northwestern Syria, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Saturday.
The strike, conducted last Sunday as part of the US' ongoing counterterrorism operations with regional partners, killed Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay, a senior military leader, CENTCOM said in a statement on X.
“As we have said in the past, we will continue to relentlessly pursue these terrorists in order to defend our homeland, and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of CENTCOM.

Syria’s jihadist-turned-president caps extraordinary transformation with White House visit
Less than a year after his lightning power grab, Syria’s president is capping his transformation from jihadist to global statesman in a historic visit to the White House that says as much about the young leader as it does his push for his country’s diplomatic reinvention.
Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s meeting on Monday – the first ever visit to the White House by a Syrian head of state – is his 20th foreign trip since appointing himself as president of Syria in January, and his second visit to the United States, following his attendance of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
But this meeting was the most high-profile and high stakes yet, a once-unthinkable encounter between the US commander-in-chief and a man who has faced American forces on the battlefield.
“He’s a very strong leader,” US President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office following Monday’s visit, adding: “He comes from a very tough place, and he’s a tough guy. I like him. I get along with him … and we’ll do everything we can to make Syria successful.”
It’s not the first time Trump has praised the Syrian leader. In May, after a brief meeting brokered by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump hailed the 43-year-old Syrian leader as a “young, attractive guy” with a “very strong past,” and ordered the lifting of some of the crippling US sanctions on Syria, a country that for decades had been firmly aligned with key American foes Russia and Iran.

amazing if it holds -- it sounds like a shotgun wedding -- Kurdish officially recognized and Kurds absorbed into Syrian security forces
culmination of a long process but Trump rightly gets some of the blame/credit for whatever happens
The Syrian government has announced an immediate nationwide ceasefire with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), taking almost full control of the country, according to Syrian state media.
The ceasefire ends nearly two weeks of fighting and forms part of a broader 14-point agreement that will see the SDF integrated into Syria's military and state institutions.
Speaking in Damascus, President Ahmed al-Sharaa said the deal would allow Syrian state institutions to reassert control over three eastern and northern governorates - al-Hasakah, Deir Ezzor and Raqqa.
The announcement followed a meeting between al-Sharaa and the US special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, in Damascus. Barrack praised the agreement as a step toward a "unified Syria."
SDF commander Mazloum Abdi was expected to attend the meeting but was unable to travel due to weather conditions, with his visit postponed until Monday, al-Sharaa said.
Kurdish-led forces established their autonomous administration during Syria's civil war, almost a decade ago, with strong backing from the United States, which armed and trained the SDF as its main local partner in the fight against the Islamic State group (Isis).
With US military support, the SDF drove Isis from much of northeastern Syria and went on to govern both Kurdish and Arab-majority areas.
Under the agreement, signed by al-Sharaa and Abdi, Syrian authorities will take over civilian institutions, border crossings and oil and gas fields that have underpinned Kurdish self-rule.
SDF military and security personnel will be integrated into Syria's defence and interior ministries following vetting, while Damascus will assume responsibility for prisons and detention camps holding tens of thousands of foreign Isis fighters and their families.
Damascus also reiterated pledges to recognise Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights, including giving Kurdish official language status and marking the Kurdish new year as a national holiday - the first formal recognition of Kurdish rights since Syria's independence from France in 1946.
The agreement also reaffirms Syria's participation in the US-led coalition against Islamic State.
The deal follows months of stalled negotiations after a previous integration effort failed and comes after Syrian government forces moved into Raqqa and nearby oil facilities following an SDF withdrawal earlier on Sunday.
Al-Sharaa said last week it was unacceptable for a militia to control a quarter of the country and hold its main oil and commodities resources.
