Lmao there’s literally nothing other teams could offer all things considered (basketball abilities + off court marketability) that would get Sa to listen but wonder how many calls they get lol
Maybe Luka or Giannis but I doubt it.

With the assets they have and pieces on the roster maybe a season or two. With his style of play Jokic will age like Timmy barring injury.

The best you can hope for with this guy is a Durant/Kevin Garnet type situation,,,hes got the tools but hes built in the same frame. Both Durant and Garnett needed to go to other teams to win titles,,,,so Spurs fans need to relax on their expectations here. He is no Tim Duncan. He is more David Robinson. If he stays here,,,,I can see the 2nd coming of Robinson where Wemby shines but wins nothing until someone comes along and carries him across the finish line,,,

Have not posted here in a long time (i don't even think it was this forum at the time), but happy to see Victor to the Spurs. He played basketball in the youth section (and for a little while professionally) for the club I'm rooting for in the French league (Nanterre) so I have been following him for a long, long time (back in 2017) when the club aired a small footage from a youth tournament where he absolutely dominated. I remember watching it with a friend, and we were both like, "he will end up in the NBA" but had no idea he would develop like this to be honest. Seeing him drafted to my favorite franchise is a really nice thing, even if I can't follow the NBA as much as I used to when I was a young student :). Expectation will be crazy, and I hope fans will understand that it may (or not) take time.

This is fucking great. Imagine the destiny of our franchise depends on the 10ths of seconds that dude takes or not to decide when he grabs 5 shaking ping pong balls.
And I love how some other dude in the background semi-yells "San Antonio".
Orlando had 6 of the remaining 11 balls for the final winning combination and the Spurs still got their ball picked for the final winning combination.

Is Victor the single most valuable asset in all of basketball? Is there a single player you’d trade him for straight up? Is there even a realistic trade package in the universe that the Spurs would take for Victor?
Considering he wants to be a Spur, there probably isn’t a trade package in the multiverse, huh?

this isnt tim duncan or 1997 anymore tho, Wemby will play at least seven years in san antonio but if he's not winning titles he will bounce. being a euro isnt enough to keep these cats loyal for their whole careers anymore in todays nba.
it wont be with Pop but Spur will be back in the NBA finals before the end of the decade, it remains to be seen whether they win but they will find a way there in a year jokic gets injured or tired. no one that good in the east anymore so it would be a W if Spur finds a real point guard anytime soon and not all the bad ones since Parker left :tu

Random shit;
1) losing fucking sucked balls and was painful as shit- fuck losing!
2) secretly rooting for losses was confusing and maddening
3) everyone had their little clues in their life and odd events leading up to the lottery and of course a lot of that was just plain wishful thinking lol - here is mine:
a) wife was peculiar all day and recounted that the previous day- she had some funny signs…i ask like what?
(This was in the early morning hours - tuesday lottery day) (wife knows zero about spurs/lottery/victor w)
…she says - like if im watching tv or scrolling online - the moment i glance at screen a number appears like 7-7-7
Or 3-3-3…maybe we should buy a lotto ticket?
(I think to myself - “yeah ok blah blah”
B) later the same morning - (she works nights) she snaps up from bed turns around and says look! (Pointing at clock)
It is 11:11 am - i look up from my desk/reading- tell her its early- you can sleep more
C) a bit later -long story short- same scenario- snaps up- and looks and its 1:11. (Wtf?)
D) finally, a bit later- ive run out for errands - come home- shes in da shower- comes out - scurries around - in/out of rooms- gathering stuff for shift- small talk etc….
Im reading stuff online- she pops in and says - what time is it - oh look! (Its 3:33pm)
im now stumped…thinking - fuck…i was happier with number 1’s…shit maybe #3 pick lol

I really have still not looked into how the draft lottery works. Is there different combinations for different number picks for the same team?
Also, Rascal mentioned something about Orlando having 6 of the remaining 11 balls for the final winning combination, but the Spurs got their ball picked. Does that mean Orlando had a better chance of getting that last number? Is that what he's referring to?
Can anyone tell me if there any videos I can watch to see how this all works?

Washington had six of the 11 remaining balls for that last ball so they had a better than 50% chance to land Wemby. Portland had the three and the Spurs had the two.

Here's the video:

The combinations are put in numerical order (1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-5, 1-2-3-6, ...., 11-12-13-14) and assigned to teams in reverse record order. The Pistons got the first 140 combinations (1-2-3-4 through 1-4-7-9), the Rockets got the next 140 (1-4-7-10 through 1-10-12-13), and the Spurs got the next 140 (1-10-12-14 through 2-5-12-13).
6 of the Spurs' 140 combos had the number 1 and one of them actually got drawn: 1-11-13-14, though it didn't count because it was after the Spurs already won the first pick.
The other 134 Spurs combos include the number 2.
That means if that fourth ball on the first draw wasn't a 2, the Spurs wouldn't have won the lottery.
I think the part about Orlando was that once 14/5/8 were drawn for the first pick, 6 of the remaining 11 balls would have given Orlando the first pick. Only one would have given it to the Spurs (#2), and sure enough it came up. Ironic that #2 actually worked in the Spurs favor. If it had been ball #1 then the Rockets would have ended up with VW.
(edit: Mugen (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=15519) is right, it was Washington and not Orlando that had 6 of the 11 combos with 14/5/8. One each for Houston/SA/Portland/Orlando/Indiana)
I'm pretty sure that the Rockets winning the coinflip over the Spurs meant their 140 combinations got listed before the Spurs, which in turn means that the 2-5-8-14 combo would have belonged to the Rockets had they lost the coinflip instead.

It's very much like a lottery drawing with 4 balls drawn out of 14. 1,000 out of 1,001 possible 4-ball combinations are assigned to the 14 teams in quantities ranging from 140 to 5. Order doesn't matter.

Team % chance for No. 1 pick
Wizards 54.5

Does anyone know what was the probability of the Spurs winning the lottery in '87 and '97?
Would be interesting to calculate the combined probability of winning all three.
I found the answer.
In '87, we had a 14.29% chance of winning the lottery (4th position)
In '97, we had a 21.6% chance (3rd position)
This year we had a 14% chance (3rd position)
So the combined probability of winning all three was 0.43%

Windy was talking about his pregame stretch program being must see, even compared it, though less impressively, to Curry's pregame routine.
It makes me think that Wembanyama is going to be less susceptible to the lisfranc or other tendon and ligature injuries that other tall guys have had issues with. Given he's been prepping for his abnormal height for years based on sports science.

Damn! I still can't believe the Spurs got the #1 pick for Wemby. The hype on Wemby is unreal. Everything connected to San Antonio and Spurs are busy.
There's already report that the demand of season ticket is rising. The financial opportunity on what Wemby will bring is gonna be remarkable, not only to Spurs but also to San Antonio as a whole. Based from the internet, it seems the San Antonio is lively again.
I really wished he'll have a good and healthy career.
What a narrative so far considering there's a mutual interest from Wemby and his camp.

Wembanyama said some interesting things in this interview:
Lottery is done, Spurs will get #1 pick, how do you feel ?
Since it's over now, I've seen some teams getting picks #2,3,4,5,6 and I was happy to see them getting these picks. I'm very happy about the outcome.
First thoughts about the city and the franchise of San Antonio?
San Antonio is for me a solid and loyal fan base despite recent ups and downs. It's also of course titles and a winning culture like nowhere else.
When you were, did you watch theses titles?
I remember about 2013 and 2014. There was of course the Ray Allen shoot, everybody remember it as a great shoot but, for me, as TP was playing, it was the bad guy shoot.
About being coached by Pop?
It will be an honor. From what I've heard, he is a demanding coach but I'm sure of one thing, it's that he is a good coach. He is quite more experienced than me, so I'm coached by him, it will be with a lot of humility and excitement.
But Spurs are currently a bottom of the barrel team?
In NBA, teams can get really better very quick. In NBA, with how fast trades are going, I've nothing to worry about that. What matters is that this franchise has a strong basis and mindset.
How do you feel about being compared with TP as you go to Spurs too?
I'm not worried at all about it. It's just an honor. I know people have a lot of expectations but they aren't higher than the ones I have for myself.

Yeah, TP has done a lot for Spurs in France. Saying that, TP and Wembanyama aren't necessarily in the best terms. When Wemby played for Parker's team in France and was coached by Parker's brother, some tensions grew on how he was used which led to Wemby leaving the team at the end of the season. It's not a big deal but I don't expect Parker to be some kind of mentor to him.
Wemby's good view about Spurs might also be because Spurs behaved well with his agent (Bouna Ndiaye) other clients (Batum and Mahinmi).

Yeah, Bouna Ndiaye is literally the most Spurs-friendly agent there is. He tried his best to get Batum to the Spurs and helped hide Mahinmi after the Spurs zeroed in on him.
Ndiaye being his agent is another amazing aspect of getting Wemby. The communication lines between him and the Spurs will never get crossed. They've been on good terms for like two decades now.

From my partial understanding, too. Might have been some upset feelings, yeah, but Wemby wanted more time on the floor. He made the right choice as he lead a second order team into great success. Much was made about Parker not saying anything on social media the night of, but I believe it was literally his birthday that night. And he doesn't necessairly need to communicate with Wemby via social media.

He is surely expected to be coached by none other than Gregg Popovich, the five-time champion and winningest coach in NBA history who oversaw the Hall of Fame careers of David Robinson and Tim Duncan before Wembanayama. Popovich, 74, is believed to have free reign to hold the Spurs’ coaching post as long as he sees fit. The veteran coach’s contract did expire at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, and he has yet to re-sign a new deal with San Antonio, sources said.

Feel like the kid had predicted it would be the Spurs and the family was essentially dapping him up like “You called it!” sorta thing. Either way, pretty evident that Wemby wanted to be a Spur. His comments afterwards during the Windhorst interview about the special relationship France has with the Spurs because of Tony and Boris and how “at least half if not all of France wanted it to be the Spurs” were pretty telling as well. Lol, the mainstream bandwagon NBA fans and media are just big time mad, with MANY of them saying the draft was rigged for us.
The same type of fans that respond with things like "Cry more 😂" when you tell them that the Lakers just got 35 4th quarter free throws to get a narrow 103-101 playoff win, or that the league just gave the Lakers a prime Pau Gasol for some hubcaps, or that they blatantly allowed Kobe Bryant (RIP tbh) to force his way to LA during the draft. Or that the league has blatantly altered rules to make it easier for certain big markets with huge superstars to win rings.
Or even blatantly rig entire playoff series so said big markets could win rings (*cough* Lakers and Heat *cough*), but yeah, we get a number one pick for the first time since 1997 (a parallel universe by now) and all the dumb shit bandwagoners are up in arms about it.
I hope we win another 4 or 5 championships to really piss them off.

Definitely. One of whom they picked 15th, one they picked 29th and one they picked at the end of the second round. They did an amazing job of supporting their number one pick. Maybe pop wants to watch the french national team practices . Nothing wrong there. Can't mix scouting with? Tampering. Tampering is discussing contracts and pop is no longer the GM

It's not about the rockets, he was just relieved the Spurs were not fourth pick more importantly as he is rooting for the Spurs since he is young he did not want to play for a rival, nothing against the city of houston or their organization tbh
In that case he should have been even more excited when Portland was revealed as the #3 pick.

teams are meeting with all kind of players in the draft right now. How could meeting Wembanyama be restricted? Just cause he's the #1 pick that doesn't mean you can't interview him. He just won't do any besides the Spurs
Right
What I meant was- is there any limit to the amount of contact- or is there a formal process etc.
I mean everyone knows who the Spurs are going to take (For maybe the first time since 97).

Brian Wright's persona is emerging over time. Seems laid-back, diligent and looking at the big picture.
That French sailor shirt he wears in the interview tells us all we need to know.
As far as Pop tampering, the combine and interviews are happening for God's sake. Teams can talk to players.
I'm guessing that the new-look Spurs will be developed slowly, methodically, subtly and successfully. No big major moves in the first year, I'd guess.

where were you when it happened?
I was at the gym. Was in the weight room 10 minutes before they started announcing the pick order on TV. Was stressing me out, so I went downstairs to play basketball. Was in the middle of a game, and I heard folks around the gym and upstairs start cheering. So I knew, but I didn't believe it until someone showed me a link from NBA.com with the official order on it lol. I wasn't even allowing myself to hope.

Duncan told Reynolds that his bond with Popovich started when the Spurs coach flew to the Virgin Islands to meet with him before the 1997 NBA draft:
“It started there, it started with him going out of his way to want to know who I was as a person, wanting to meet my friends, wanting to meet my father, sit down and speak with him. It started there. And he built that trust from early on, just trying to understand who I was—not just as a basketball player, but as a person and beyond.”

Two years guaranteed, years 3 and 4 are team options. He can sign an extension after year 3 that kicks in after year 4. If he doesn’t do that, he’s a restricted FA after year 4, but we can match any offer.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein (https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-nba-latest-on-whos-going-where), the young phenom will have the benefit of learning from a Hall of Famer, as Tim Duncan is expected to work with Wembanyama upon his arrival in San Antonio:
"At the behest of longtime Spurs patriarch Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan agreed to join Pop's coaching staff for the 2019-20 campaign interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. That one season was enough for Duncan to reaffirm what many suspected and what he surely already knew—full-time coaching isn't for him—but the expectation is that he will regularly visit the team's practice facility to work with Wembanyama when the Spurs are home."

Q: What about the lottery and SA getting the first pick ?
Victor: It's been months that i was telling myself nevermind the franchise where i will go, it'll be OK. And if the franchise that drafts me isn't in a good situation, i would try to make it better. But i had a very strong feeling that it would be San Antonio.
Q: And about the draft itself ?
Victor: Well, i think about it of course but it seems a little bit unreal right now.
Q: In the playoffs, right now, we see a lot of crazy performances every night (tatum, butler, jokic....). What do you think about it and what is your pronostic for these playoffs ?
Victor: well, i won't lie, at first, i was thinking about the bucks winning it all. but now, ...blah blah blah ... a lot of good teams ... blah blah blah,.... i see the lakers doing well...
Q: Does it inspire you ? Do you envision yourself next year ?
Victor: Of Course. I'm telling myself i belong there. It's so beautiful to see that. It's so aerial, it goes so fast. But, well, it's no surprise, that's what i want since i was a kid.
Q: What about the three last MVPs ? They are your direct competition (playing at your position).
Victor: It speaks a lot about the evolution and improvement of the game. A player can be dominant technically and mentally, but we see that he'll dominate even more with 4 more inches. They are all bigs.
Well, that's it. Honestly, the questions from Mahinmi were lame and the rythm of the interview was weird. Nothing very interesting to take from this. Interviewer seems to be a real job after all.

1st off I didnt recognized him straight away but its Yan Mahinmi interviewing VW!
He basically confrmed he had a feeling about the Spurs drafting him for months, but would have been ready whatever the destination, that it was up to him to make the best of what destiny gave him, that he believes he has a "lucky star" (not a quote juste gobal translation)
He was asked about the last 3 MVPs being direct competitors/same profile and agreed that BB was changing (for the better he thinks), that whatever talent and technic u have, size is a massive advantage.
He was asked about PO prognostics and had the Bucks wining it all and no has the Lakers...
+some small talk about Spurs fans in Africa (VW seemed surprised there are)

Team do him right, no need to worry.
France loves the Spurs and if they can enhance that...
He's embracing that moment.
It's on San An to make sure they don't F it up.
He'll be here if Brian can work some magic and the lure of LA, et al, will be moot because he will want to lay his legacy upon the team that the French has planted it's foundation upon the NBA.

Ndiaye being his agent is another amazing aspect of getting Wemby. The communication lines between him and the Spurs will never get crossed. They've been on good terms for like two decades now.
