The dude will split for a big market just like Shaq did from Orlando,,,Durant from OKC,,,,LeBron from Cleveland,,,hell, Kobe almost left a big market for another big market in Chicago and Duncan was dangerously close to leaving for Orlando. Wemby has already served notice to the small market Spurs that he expects to win titles immediately. If you dont think it can happen,,,,go ask all those fans in other cities when their generational #1 pick left town,,,,

Trying to win and actually winning are two diffent things,,,,Pop cant do shit right now. Spurs couldnt even keep Kawhi,,,,what makes them think this wonderkid is gonna stick around after 4 years? No chance. Its as close to a sure thing as you can get,,,San Antonio cant compete with LA or New York when they come calling,,,,

Unless he quits like Leonard he would be stuck in SA for 7 years.
4 years on the rookie contract, and presumably the Spurs would offer the max which means he would have to sign a minimum 3 year offer sheet with another team, which Spurs get to match.

But he could certainly quit like the last guy so if he really wants out it could happen.

Pop just came off his finest season as a coach and developed a great young team to pair with Wembanyama.

Kawhi wanted to play for the Lakers or the Clippers. If he had been drafted by one of them, he'd have never left. Wembanyama was dying to be a Spur. He will never leave.

BTW, there is no way anyone is taking seriously someone who separates sentences with a series of commas.

He isn't going to stay just because France has Spur fans.

We have the best development environment for him, so we should be able to keep for for at least 7 years. If he decides he's had enough development time and wants to leave, the spurs can probably trade him for like 2 all stars and 8 first round draft picks. That's the price and we're sticking to it.

Bruce played in France when he was coming up. Tony Parker was a kid who would come to the games with his dad, who would give Bowen advice and they became friendly. Tony was excited to be drafted by San Antonio because he could play with Bruce. There is a video on EDIT: the NBA app about Bowen that is pretty good. I guess they don't mind saying good things about him now that he is an employee.

The reality is these Spurs are not Duncan and Robinson’s Spurs. The market has shifted. With SA, Austin, Mexico and South Texas and France and Argentina in the mix, the market is bigger than you could imagine. The world is small, but the leadership figured that out long ago and that’s why todays “SA” market is bigger than you think. Memphis, New Orleans and all the others don’t have that to offer. Heck, not even Chicago. Welcome to 2023.

Spurs market will rise with Wembanyama. They also already started to market the team in Austin, Mexico, etc. Add to that that the narrative "the Spurs are boring" will be gone soon with Wembanyama on the team and us playing a high paced game. There will be plenty of dunks and blocks and the team will be fun to watch

During the early 2010’s the Spurs were huge as far west as Albuquerque and were darlings of the Nate Silver crowd.

How is it set up for individual teams to monetize that attention outside their markets?

The 1970s Spurs were not considered boring. They had a run and gun offense.

I'd like to see the Spurs get some athleticism and not try to win with a half court walk the ball up setup on offense style.

I don't think the boring label has ever been due to anything other than media members not being able to get a sound bite out of Timmy. The '99 team was a juggernaut, the '03 team were comeback kids, the 05 finals was amazing and 07 was domination of the best player in the world. Folks don't realize how popular the Spurs are outside of the US. All these years of success with international players weren't in vain. In today's globalized social media era, the Spurs need to take advantage of this.

With Wemby now on the team it is the perfect time to capitalize and expand on that international popularity. They're on a prime situation to do so, hope they make a conscious effort in this regard.

If Paris had an nba team id worry

The biggest factor to lose wemby is if leaving yields better talent. Lebron really pioneered using free agency to get the team he wants. If the spurs bring good teammates like Jokic and giannis have, theres no reason to leave. Maybe LA, NYK or miami manage to clear their books and offer a team of quality, then wemby can leave. But its hella hard to get cap space and talent. LA would need an incredible patience to do it.

I give it 90 percent chance he will play out the extension the spurs will give him unlike Kawhi which would mean he’s here for 7-8 years. You're wrong. Shaq left because Orlando wouldn't match the Lakers' offer. DeVos felt like Orlando's offer was better, given that Florida didn't have a state income tax, and Shaq was insulted. The difference was like $6 million, IIRC ($121 v $115). Not to be ignored, either, was the crap (in print and on talk radio) that the Bible Belt Central Floridians were giving Shaq for having a child out of wedlock.

WRT Wemby - the Spurs struck gold twice in that DRob & Tim were introverted homebodies who started playing basketball late. They weren't on the AAU circuit and didn't blossom in HS until they were seniors. Tim was barely recruited, & DRob wasn't recruited at all, so neither had the spotlight (or the grifters) on them until they were in their 20s.

Wemby's a product of the French version of AAU - his parents, sibling & grandparents were/are pro basketball player, and Wemby has been a professional since he was 15. It's doubtful that this guy will stick around unless the Spurs give him the keys to the org AND give him everything he wants/needs to win.

Yeah, I was an adult and a NBA fan back then, and that's all Laker fan revisionist bullshit, IMO. Shaq talked about going to the Lakers for years, especially when he was filming his movie because he thought he was going to be a movie star. The national media played up all the drama because they wanted him in LA.

Orlando fans were bitter that he wasn't showing any loyalty and hadn't been for quite some time.

They announced his move to LA like the day after Kazaam came out.

I think he would stay since European stars have more loyalty to the teams that drafted him and the Spurs are pretty popular internationally. We'd have to royally fuck it up for him to be motivated to leave so soon after coming into the league. There's a picture of him in a Tony Parker jersey as a kid too, it isn't anything to bank on but there's no reason to think he'd just want to be in a big market if we build the team around him if he was a fan of the Spurs and Tony Parker who was with the Spurs until the end (well... Charlotte for a year :lol).

Even if he bolts, 4 years of Wemby would be huge for the Spurs no matter how you slice it.

The people cant support another pro team,,,they have an empty dump of a stadium in the Alamo Dome that they thought would attract an NFL team,,,,lmao. Spurs tried to play there but couldnt even fill have of it on a nightly basis so they moved. They would block off half the Dome just so it didnt look so empty when the Spurs played there. now its pimped out for things like the Alamo Bowl and the UTSA roadrunners...lmao. The SA market is 24th out of 28 I think.
You’re looking at the Market of SA. That’s not what the Spurs are doing. Literally market and market space are distinct things and the spurs and capitalizing on that. Layman’s terms? Wemby can do a commercial for companies nationally, Locally in SA, Austin, Corpus, Mexico, South Texas, France, one with Manu in Argentina and many other places. That’s what the spurs are building and it makes sense. A player in Memphis or even Chicago can’t do that. He can’t market to various local cities, countries and nationally.

All bigger markets than San Antonio,,,,Dallas has 4 pro teams(Cowboys, Stars, Rangers, Mavericks),,,Denver has 4 pro teams(Broncos, Avalanche, Rockies, Nuggets),,,Philly has 4 pro teams(Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, Phillies),,,and the reason the Greek Freak has stuck in Milwaukee is because he's winning and has already won a title,,,same cant be said for Wemby yet,,,,what about the small market in San Antonio dont you get? let me know when San Antonio gets its 2nd major pro team muchless its 4th like the rest of the cities you mentioned,,,,lmao
Do you think Jokic and Doncic stay on their teams just because there are other sports teams in Denver and Dallas?

They already have. That was why Wemby wanted to come to the Spurs. While Spur championships did not draw great viewership in the USA, they had the great viewership worldwide. Moving from San Antonio would jeopardize that market. San Antonio truly is a melting pot culture.

So NBA teams draw revenue from tickets/arenas, TV markets, merchandise, and sponsorships. The international scene doesn’t help sell tickets or otherwise generate arena revenue very much. It doesn’t help the direct local TV market, whether in SA, Austin, CC, RGV, etc. It probably help the league as a whole if, say, the NBA signs more lucrative TV and streaming deals internationally because of Wemby.

It definitely helps with merchandise and sponsorship pieces. That’s the “brand” part of the revenue. So Wemby’s international appeal helps build the Spurs brand. When they say that Wemby increased the value of the Spurs by $500 million, I’m assuming that the vast majority of that is the boost to the brand.

at the end, nobody knows what will Wemby do. He seems happy to be going to San Antonio, there is some history about international players, especially from France, a good coach, he is going to be paid a lot. That being said, this is a small town with not as much appeal as other big cities or Paris where he is coming from, there is no star at the moment to help him. A lot is going to depend on the ability for the Spurs to surround him with a team capable of winning the championship. While it doesn't have to be right now, I think that it should be in place by the time he is about to sign his max contract.

Shaq left because he wanted to make movies. What's with all the revisionist bullshit around here?
He made a movie in Orlando hahaha. And these so called movies he wanted to make from 1996-2004, he made two horrible ones in starring roles( Kazaam and Steel). The rest were little parts. He didn't need to move to LA for the films. He told orlando what he wanted and they bullshitted, the lakers gave him what he wanted. I don't like defending Shaq, but that's the truth. Owners didn't think he was worth the money.

Agreed nobody knows what the future holds but usually guys accept an extension and play out their contract. Despite the hectic pace at which players force trades that even in recent years Ben Simmon, Kawhi, and Kyrie are the only three guys not to play out their contract extension with the team that drafted them and force their way out through trade. They are also mentally a bunch of Basketcases. Maybe Wemby will go the same route, but I like to believe the odds are he will play out the extension and then make a decision if he wants to stay in SA when he's an unrestricted FA.

and thens he gone. Very rare that guys like Duncan and Robinson come along and stay in a small market,,,,,the chances of it happening a 3rd time for San Antonio are very slim.

He wanted to be in SA, stop assuming he’s the kind of player looking for fame and media exposure.

The San Antonio metropolitan area has about the same number of people as the Lyon metropolitan area, to give a frame of reference. If the French consider Lyon a small town, then I concede the point.

Lyon metropolitan area is the second largest in France. San Antonio metropolitan area is the 24th largest in the US, it is all relative to the size of the country. And sorry but San Antonio doesn’t have as much to offer as Paris or other cities in the US like New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco…That being said, if Wemby is a home buddy then it doesn’t matter.

Ever since the lottery, I have been wearing my Spurs T-shirts in the Austin area. (Kyle, Buda and Austin) Let me tell you the atmosphere over here is tremendous! We are excited to no end, and cannot wait till the 2023-2024 season begins!
BTW I am a former San Antonio native myself who came to live in the Austin area since 2019.

Even if true, 4 years is not bad at all. That's enough time to get a bachelor's degree.

Agreed one thing for sure it will be entertaining.

Tony Parker just said he doesn't think he'll be going anywhere soon, that the Spurs were his dream team.
