The stars aligned for Hurts to have such a good season last year due to their offensive scheme. Let’s see how he does after opposing coaches have had an offseason to study the film. IMO, he isn’t the 6th best QB in the NFL.

Don't get me wrong I fully expect the Colts to suck, but I appreciate them gambling on a high upside prospect instead of bringing in the corpse of a former great QB again.
I have a good feeling though considering our new HC developed both Herbert and Hurts.

Joey B rightly given 1st and 10 at the SCam 42 yard line with 43 seconds left.
I like those odds for Joe B to either tie for OT and/or get the W be it reg or OT.
Thus all the Mahomes slurpers / Joe B discrediters can't spout the "No Superbowls" prawwwwk.
*I have nothing against Mahomes, great QB who was similarly totally burned by BradyRef.

that specific archetype of QB does not lead to much NFL success historically
should have drafted Will Levis

They were kinda screwed at that #4 pick in the draft either way. Outside of Young and Stroud, you were gambling even on Will Levis. I think the Colts are gonna see if they hit on the Richardson pick and if not they'll try again in a better draft class 3-4 years down the road.

I don't believe Young and Stroud are any good either.
There hasn't been a blue chip QB prospect since Trevor Lawrence and the top three in the 2020 class. With a red chip you can just as easily get Mitch Trubisky as Jalen Hurts. Then again, Mahomes was considered red chip but mostly because he went to a lesser school and had a bad offensive line in college and took a lot of sacks as a result.
There were blue chippers on the board like Jalen Carter, you have to draft BPA not need.
tOSU and Bama quarterbacks don't have a good track record in the NFL because they look good on stacked teams and then are drafted on to bottom tier NFL teams and get exposed quickly for the propped up princesses they are.
With a guy like Richardson you will get splash plays like a 90 yard TD run when it's 3rd and 18 from deep in your own territory, and you'll also get a lot of pick sixes and bad long sacks. He's going to be meh in the NFL at best.

spurraider21 (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=31905) Should I prepare myself for Carr to hurt me? Or do you mostly blame the defense that he always had around him?
just think kirk cousins. when things go right, he's probably a top 5 accurate passer and has a solid arm. when he decides to let it rip, he has a lot more zip than people think. not stafford territory but probably top 10-ish when it comes to general arm talent
by all accounts good character guy, locker room guy. always says right things at press conferences, etc. wont get you in any trouble there.
he's tough when it comes to playing thru injuries, but he's soft in the moment (has a tendency to crumble when the pocket isnt holding up... fumbles more easily than he should). has had a track record of being quick to check down, throw it away, or take the short gimme when bigger plays are available, which is frustrating because he actually has a good deep ball. similarly frustrating when he tries to loft so many throws with touch instead of just letting it rip.
what he does incredibly well is pre-snap processing. the best years of his career were probably the last two under gruden when he had complete freedom at the line to do whatever he wanted
also true that he's never had a good defense. since he was drafted, the raiders have never even had a top 20 defense a single time. saints roster should give him a better chance to succeed than the raiders did.
he's also coming off basically his worst individual season performance since maybe his rookie year tbh. uncharacteristically inaccurate... like just missing open throws. should rebound from that imo

I don't either, I think Stroud has the best chances just due to his size and accuracy, but I was not happy about them deciding to go QB in this class. Our GM basically backed himself into this corner by riding the QB carousel too long.
Timing might work out nice if Richardson ends up a bust, Colts could have a high pick again when Arch Manning declares for the draft.

Yeah Arch Manning would be the legacy pick and make the most sense and be the way to go. Richardson was going to be a reach for whoever picked him.
Stroud is a tOSU BQB, when's the last one who was good? They pump them out like crazy and they end up like shit in the NFL i.e. Trashkins, Fields, et al.

Yeah Ewers definitely showed some flashes and probably would have had a great season if he didn't get injured early last season. No reason to start Manning over him yet. Manning won't see the field this year unless theres an injury imo

carr is always a camp god. his problem comes when bullets are flying and he's scared of taking a hit, pocket collapses, etc. but every year raiders beat writers had nothing to say about him in camp. didnt miss throws, hit guys in stride, etc. was like a broken record
but nevertheless i think he's due for a bounceback. cant be any worse than last year. the two years prior he was a top 8-12 qb in the league. he's also gonna probably have his best overall OL situation in a few years (not sold on Penning yet as a pass protecting LT, but the rest of the line is better than he's had with the raiders in recent years)

mostly agree with your list. but for your "the rest" group, i dont know if you ordered those or not. i dont think Purdy is in that tier anyway, but Goff should be at the bottom of it. i think rodgers should be several spots higher. he is older and coming off a down year, but i dont think he's cooked, think the situation was bad. but you never know, he could just be declining. its my guess though, that he still has some in the tank

Trash Allen at #2 is a fucking joke. :lmao
especially since Burrow owns that monkeyballer's loser ass head to head every single time regardless of venue and weather.
Burrow, has actually defeated Mahomes head to head in the championship game one year and was one bad sack away from possibly doing it back-to-back. Allen? Only beats Mahomes in meaningless Week 5 regular season games but chokes in the playoffs every single time.
Trash Allen is literally the white Scam Newton. He's one (way overdue) injury away from being post-2015 or even post-2018 Scam Newton, too.

Josh Allen has better playoffs numbers than Burrow in literally every category.
Allen in the playoffs: 292 yds per game - 17 TDs (2.1 Tds per game)- 4 ints (0.5 ints per game) - 417 rushing yards - 2 rushing TDs - 99.6 Ratg
Burrow in the playoffs: 260 yds per game - 9 TDs (1.2 TDs per game) - 4 ints (0.6 ints per game) - 101 rushing yds - 1 rushing TD - 93.8 Ratg

Yes, and the QB is in control of situational awareness, which is why Brady consistently won in the playoffs and even most of his Super Bowl / championship game losses were due to some crazy fluky bad luck. It's crazy good how Brady was at the game management department of football.
You can shit on game management and situation management all you want, and it's very difficult to quantify. But it's arguably the most important intangible in the game and it's directly related to W-L. It's why a lot of guys with good stats like Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott, Jay Cutler, Sam Bradford, etc do awesome against bad teams have never been able to cut it come playoff time. Guys like Newton and Russell Wilson have been pretty bad at it, too.
Aside from Brady, guys like Rodgers, Mahomes, and even both Mannings to an extent have excelled at that intangible over the years. Burrow is definitely in that upper echelon there compared to Allen. Aside from his playoff losses, just look at Allen's performance at home against Minnesota in the regular season last year for a solid example. Allen's perfectly abhorrent situational awareness, both at the end of regulation and overtime, directly cost Buffalo that game.

How do you game manage a coin toss?
You really think Atlanta was going down the field and scoring if they won the coin toss, considering they hadn't scored since early in the 3rd quarter and the Patriots' defense was well rested having spent 3/4 of the game on the bench? :lol
And besides, that was only one out of 7 Super Bowl's.
Millennial_Messiah
08-10-2023, 05:23 PM
Coin toss aside, QB's decision making is generally tied largely to time of possession (TOP), which is important stat and why the Patriots came back to beat the Falcons, because defenses get tired and wear out if they're on the field generally more than 55-60% of total snaps from scrimmage.
Buffalo lost to KC in 2021 not because of the coin toss, but because their offense couldn't do shit and stay on the field in the first 3 quarters of the game. Good for them for exploding at the very end of regulation, but game management and situational awareness starts from the very first possession. Every three-and-out is critical.

Josh Allen got the winning TD with 13 seconds to go. It doesn't get much better than that in terms of game and clock management, tbh. :lol
Compare that to how Burrow beat Mahomes. KC with 2 straight possesions and plenty of time to get a score but Cincy got lucky that Mahomes played his only bad game of football against them. It had nothing to do with Burrow's game management of intangibles.
Allen in his loss vs KC pkayed considerably better than Burrow in his win against them.

No, he didn't. He played like ass juice for 3 quarters and found a Madden-esque glitch with Gabriel Davis midway through the 4th and spammed it like the video game, but outside of Gabe Davis where was that Buffalo offense all day?
Burrow played a Brady-like game in 2021. Methodical, plodding, control TOP, win the game late with a healthy mix of running and passing to the right guys on the right down and distance. Sure, Mahomes screwed the pooch at the end of regulation by getting a field goal and not a TD, but it's not like he left Burrow with any time, either?
Heck, Burrow lost the coin toss in OT that game and once he got the ball he marched his team down to kick an easy championship game winning field goal. He arguably got robbed of the Lombardi trophy as well by some late LA-ref shenanigans that was eerily reminiscent of the Lakerefs, tbh. :lol
Also - most recently - how did each of Burrow and Allen do in the icy, snowy January Buffalo New York conditions that are supposed to give Buffalo such a huge home field advantage in the playoffs, tbh? :lol

The difference is Allen scored 14 pts in the 4th, while Burrow only scored 3. The real difference is Mahomes goated vs the Bills defense, while he had a brain fart against the Bengals. Nothing to do with Allen or Burrow.

How'd Allen do in the 2019, 2020, or 2022 playoffs tbh?
2019- got beat by an overall inferior team, lost a 4th quarter double digit lead in the process
2020- won two home games by the skin of teeth, then got crushed by Mahomes
2022- barely won at home against a bad team with no QB, then scored 10 fuckin' points at home, and got his shit pushed in by Burrow :toast
other than 2021 playoffs, which drastically inflated Trash Allen's numbers (I believe he scored 7 TDs versus a very bad Patriots team, before the KC game) - he's been a playoff zero

was my least favorite of the 4 in this draft
its just his preseason debut, but his processing looks painfully slow. even here, this ball should have been out way quicker. its a layup. but he sits and thinks about it way too long

i think Bryce will look very different in that regard. bryce was my clear cut #1 just because he looks very plug and play ready, where each of the other 3 needed work. Levis in a nice spot...
this will all be moot if Stroud pans out, but imo the texans had one of the worst drafts when you factor in the will anderson trade

W-L shouldn't be the top way you rank QBS
To an extent, but rings absolutely do matter.
Even disregarding that, Burrow is the better QB by a mile. Burrow drops back looking to THROW, like a real quarterback. Burrow consistently throws from the pocket, and accurate, on-the-money passes outside the numbers to outside wideouts, which is a very difficult skill to find -- he's arguably better at that than Mahomes himself. Trash Allen drops back generally looking to scramble and either make some acrobatic throw on the run or monkeyball it. Like most running QBs, when he throws from the pocket it's generally over the middle and favoring the tight ends, because that's the convenient throw, but it's not the throw that makes good QBs elite. He's not a prototype QB and because of the monkeyballing, he's going to have major injury issues. Called the same thing for Lamar Jackson a few years ago and lately the Ravens have missed the playoffs because indeed Jackson has missed significant time due to lower leg injuries caused by being a running QB.

Stroud looks better than I ever gave him credit for tbh. wasnt impressed in week 1, he showed some promise in week 2, albeit with a lot of garbage time, but played outstanding in weeks 3 and 4. he's coming along nice and just looks comfortable, which is surprising for a rookie playing behind an OL like that
I had higher expectations of richardson than most, and he's outperforming even that. shit luck with a concussion on a touchdown run. not even like he took a huge hit. just fell on his back and head snapped down. but this guy has been electric as long as he's on the field. yeah he still misses a pass high here and there, but by and large his accuracy has been fine. he's also been the victim of some shaky receiver play. there are some drops, but also some plays where guys simply didnt look back at the ball, etc. some of his best throws this year have ended up being incompletions. this is an example of all that (though PI also should have been called on the defense here)
1708709685107286337
and here... just some bad luck on an outstanding throw. though you question why the backup TE is out there running a double move down the filed while pittman is given a blocking assignment in the slot
1708922127930257483
bryce is struggling bad, but he has absolutely nothing going for him. he has a shit OL (so does Stroud), but he has even worse weaponry around him than Stroud does. still, stroud is out there making lemonade.

Crazy to think that we went into the season with the most lopsided disparity in conference QB talent and now you’re adding the promise of Richardson and Stroud to the mix:wow

Bummer.
Colts' Anthony Richardson (shoulder) to IR, out at least 4 games - ESPN (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38631496/colts-anthony-richardson-shoulder-ir-least-4-games)

just think kirk cousins. when things go right, he's probably a top 5 accurate passer and has a solid arm. when he decides to let it rip, he has a lot more zip than people think. not stafford territory but probably top 10-ish when it comes to general arm talent
by all accounts good character guy, locker room guy. always says right things at press conferences, etc. wont get you in any trouble there.
he's tough when it comes to playing thru injuries, but he's soft in the moment (has a tendency to crumble when the pocket isnt holding up... fumbles more easily than he should). has had a track record of being quick to check down, throw it away, or take the short gimme when bigger plays are available, which is frustrating because he actually has a good deep ball. similarly frustrating when he tries to loft so many throws with touch instead of just letting it rip.
what he does incredibly well is pre-snap processing. the best years of his career were probably the last two under gruden when he had complete freedom at the line to do whatever he wanted
also true that he's never had a good defense. since he was drafted, the raiders have never even had a top 20 defense a single time. saints roster should give him a better chance to succeed than the raiders did.
he's also coming off basically his worst individual season performance since maybe his rookie year tbh. uncharacteristically inaccurate... like just missing open throws. should rebound from that imo
derek just pls use your natural arm talent more often like this
1713792669967688182
derek, pls stop throwing deep touch throws off your back foot all the time like this

#2 is too high for Allen at the moment, for sure. Maybe if he was smarter, or had a better OC/offense to protect him from some of his tendencies, but we'll see what happens soon enough.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt untill the end of the season. He always has these rough patches and then he ends the regular season on a tear.

It's almost like with Mahomes the regular season doesn't matter. He really needed that one road playoff championship run to cement him as the next GOAT and on par with Brady, not just a spoiled front runner who can only win in Arrowhead in the playoffs.
The 2023-24 Chiefs were IMO very reminiscent of, say, the 2000-01 or 2001-02 Lakers. Who needs home field advantage when you can, in the playoffs, bend over that supposedly better-on-paper team on their own home soil?
The Bills missed a chip shot field goal? The Ravens fumbled just short of the goal line? The Sacramento Kings missed a shit ton of free throws? Nobody remembers any of that shit in the end when tallying championships. :lol Every sports team makes mistakes, the only teams that are remembered are the ones who make the least and capitalize on their opponent's the most.

You just remembered the gifts other teams handed the Chiefs and posted as such.

Lol the regular season absolutely mattered to the Chiefs and Mahomes. They didn't just cruise and then "flip the switch".
The WRs absolutely lost 2 games for the Chiefs outright, maybe 3. They were very lucky they had an excellent defense this year or it might have been worse.
