The 2023 Silver & Black Open Scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 5PM., at the AT&T Center, presented by Ticketmaster. The free event features an intra-squad scrimmage and gives fans a chance to watch the 2023-24 team in action prior to the season home opener on Oct. 25 vs. Dallas.

Not too fond of this part....

Unique this year, the Silver & Black Open Scrimmage will be a ticketed event. While still free, fans will need to join the Official Spurs Fan Club for a chance to win (4) tickets to the Open Scrimmage. Deadline to join and enter to win tickets is Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 11:59PM CT.

Can't Attend in Person? Check-in on October 7 to Stream Live! (https://www.facebook.com/groups/613415006216589/)

Yeah I signed up today, but don't live in SA city limits so might be disqualified. They don't disqualify me from buying season tickets though.

I can see why they required tickets. I am sure a lot more people will want to go this year with Wemby being on the team and the first chance to see him live. I have gone to the ones during the week and while not packed they had good attendance and that was during the week. This is on a Saturday.

Yes, would love a link. (And a Riga Time! ;))

By the way, I was in the Riga immigration office this summer getting my visa to live in Latvia and they have a huge monitor on the wall with a video of a person telling everyone the rules and general procedures. I guess it is a celebrity so people will listen. That person on the video? Davis Bertans.

Hey, great to hear from you! I'm not moving here permanently, just until late 2024. Then I'll be in the USA for a while. Latvia is great in spring, autumn and especially summer (the beaches are fantastic). Winter is a bummer though. Too cold.

If people can't figure out Facebook, they surely aren't going to figure out Twitch or Discord or whatever else.

That said, putting it in a private group instead on the OFFICIAL Spurs page is straight up silly. There are literally links on the Spurs page linking you to request access to the "Spurs Fan" page...not sure what the point is other than maybe trying to weed out bots or spammers

Under 2k watching. Probably testing things so wanted it small to practice.

Quick bits:

Collins looks awesome.

Wemby looks slow and out of place on defense.

Tre hit a three in rhythm. His movement seems to be focusing the pick and roll.

Vassell looks like the HIM of the team.

Glad to have Mamu. Just a basketball playmaker that the spurs need. If he can create any type of defense, will be a player.

Wemby does not seem to know where he's running as a PF when the team runs. He's definitely used to being a wing. Has run to wing areas multiple times and then realizes he's in the wrong spot.

I see that as a good thing. He really hasn't had a lot of solid coaching. Everything that has been seen so far, has been without solid coaching. His decision making is still real raw and it shows. He's got so much room to grow. That's exciting.

Wemby was looking for the ball more than he was looking for teammates. He has that tunnel vision issue from summer league still. Needs to move and create opportunities off movement. Seems pretty selfish as a player still. He's going to have some rough games when reality hits him on that type of playing not translating in the NBA.

They took him off the court when this issue was bad in the 4th. Maybe gave him a pep talk, he came back in and started running hard to his spots but eventually reverted to stopping and waiting for the ball again.

Maybe his conditioning really is an issue like he said himself.

This is Vassells team. No doubt about that.

Cedi is a keeper
Zach played pretty good
Vassell had it going
Wemby was chucking it up
Wesley had nice looks but needs to do more when he has the ball
Branham was invisible
Barlow almost pissed Zach off by trying to score too much inside
Jabari has a nice floater
Julian had a nice dunk and i think will have a big year this year

all in all, i think what i learned from this scrimmage is that Julian and Cedi will have a lot of minutes in the rotation

maybe Mamu too, his shot looks nice.

scott
10-07-2023, 06:05 PM
We'll certainly learn more very shortly once pre-season starts, but based on this scrimmage - what does everyone feel the rotations will look like?

Dex
10-07-2023, 06:05 PM
Fun scrimmage, but obviously just a glorified practice. Still cool that the Spurs do this for the fans, even with its faults

Guys were obviously just messing around and not REALLY playing defense...but there were some bright spots including Vassell, Champ, Mamu, and even Collins was doing a bit of everything. Wemby never really got involved and definitely looks raw at NBA speed but I also don't think they were really running any sets around him

Monday will be more telling as far as real competition, rotation, and just what to expect going forward. :hungry: Basketball season is upon us!

It's early in his first training camp and it seems the team isn't forcing anything for Victor, he's being treated like any other rookie or newcomer. I don't see any focus on jamming it in to him or setting anything special up. My guess is they're getting him to learn the overall system on both sides and go from there.

Devin didnt really show anything that’s different from last year tbh. I was hoping he would showoff his newfound strength but most of his shots were catch and shoot 3’s. It’s great that he made so many, but so did Bryn Forbes. I hope he shows something else during the preseason games.

None of this is true and I don't know what game you were watching.

Not sure if serious, or just an attempt at attention but I'll humor this.
His passes always came after he got stiffled, which was pretty much most of the time he dribbled. His drives weren't with his teammates in mind and quite a few times his off-ball motion was contradictory to the ball handler and he wasnt aware of drawing help defense to his own teammates. It's selfish player habits. He may not understand that yet, and that's fine because you know..he's a kid. It doesn't change what that type of play is. I'm sure he'll work on fixing it.
He was constantly walking down with the main ball handler looking for the ball instead of going to a position. When he would, he would do a lot of ball watching and standing straight up. He stood at the inbound several times instead of running the floor to get position. The play after he came back in the 4th, he sprinted to his spot instead of waiting for the ball at inbound. I expected this, and he was being blatant about waiting for the ball instead of moving. The announcers pointed out that he was coming back in. He clearly got some quick advice.
The plays before he got subbed out in the 4th, he had turned it over and shot a brick without passing. As soon as he was out the team moved the ball around and Ciss got an open rim layup. Once again, he probably doesn't see it that way as he's a kid. He will learn and get better. It doesn't change the scouting report.
He looked very much like a teenager who hasn't had a lot of experience playing fundamental ball. Which is exactly what he is. He doesn't set up well on defense, he gets tunnel vision constantly, he trips up by not lining his body correctly on defense, on rebounds, and on screens. He runs to the wrong spots and looks lost quite a bit.
That's okay. He's young and inexperienced. He'll get better.

Driving hard during a team scrimmgage seems like a bad idea. Barlow and Collins nearly got hurt for a hard drive and foul.

Collins looks like Rambo with those headban :lol. Ripped. He’s ready to battle. Like Pop said, I expect him to be the enforcer out there. I’m sure fans of opposing teams would like to hate him. I’m glad he’s on our team. That’s my criticism with Poeltl. As big as be is and very capable, he doesn’t seem to like to engage or if ever, it’s not every time unless Pop put a fire on his butt. Collins, he’s willing to do the dirty work. Like he said, he only got one gear - nasty.

Zach and Vassell are the best performers in the scrimmage.

Zach looked like a all rounder with range and toughness inside the paint.

Vassell's stroke looked smooth. Look like his training with KD helped him.

Wemby's strides are long and if he can assert himself with strength, he should be able to draw fouls consistently.

Wemby had a few moments where he flashed the skills and potential that will make him great. The good things he does are jaw dropping.
He also showed that he is extremely raw and has little idea what to do.
Additionally, I’m concerned that his defensive impact will be limited by playing the 4 this year.
It is going to be a lot of trial and error and learning before he truly starts to put it together.

I agree that putting him at the 4 may limit his impact, but hopefully will also prevent him from taking a beating and getting bullied by the bulkier players while he is still just getting his feet under him.

From the 3 point line, it’s about 2.5 steps to the rim. In addition, he won’t have to be at the 3 point line to defend 3 pointers. He can practically be in the lane, and still close out. Defense is the last thing you should worry about. He very well might knock DeJounte out of the spot as youngest All D selection ever.

Victor, for all the hype, talent and potential.. is still clearly a rookie. The Spurs have done the right thing in not heaping any expectations such as reaching the playoffs or contention. We will have another season where reaching-the-potential and development (with some wins in the way) will be more important than any chance of contention. What is clearly going to be a slow process for Victor to figure out is positioning and affecting plays. It will take a while for him to get used to the rhythm, tempo and the geometry of the NBA game.

The team defense, I am not sure, will suddenly improve from last year's. It is quite clear that the Spurs rookies/ sophomores are still quite lost on positioning and reading the plays on defense. Sochan didn't play so the Spurs will be better than what they showed yesterday but we can expect a long learning curve this year. Offensively, the Spurs look really good in the shooting and passing front, though and they should be really entertaining to watch. But after 2023-24, I expect the Spurs to be picking in the early lottery again next season.

I remember watching the Silver/Black scrimmage in the mid 90s at the Erwin Center. It was fun but it’s also just a scrimmage. Vinny Del Negro looked like an All NBA player hitting from everywhere, and we all know Vinny was just Vinny. Robinson was invisible because all the guards were taking the shots. The most important part was that it was cool to see our team early and it was free.

fun to watch... Victor showed some really nice flashes of his passing and vision without really being force fed anything. He still needs to shake the overly fundamental box out thing he does when a shot goes up and just trust his size but that will come.

The shooters were hitting their shots which made for some fun back and forth. Zach is going to be the starting units stabilizing force as the season gets going. Knows when to shoot, drive, pass. Positions himself well defensively.

Was obviously not an all out effort on the defensive end but you can still see how Wemby's length, especially in the first half, made the silver group extremely hesitant to probe the paint. Gonna be a fun year.

I saw a lot of shooters who can hit the 3’s even our bigs and that should be useful with opening lanes, position-less and heavy ball movement that I think Pop will have them play a lot. It's a welcome change from 3-4 years ago when our squad was limited with who can hit the 3’s. Collins is going to be tough. You can see him relish those contacts. Poeltl was taller and more equipped, but didn’t really have the dawg in him, which was my frustration with him. You can’t say that on Collins. He will get in the mix and that would be contagious with our young core. With Wemby looming, he’s a step or two from help defense with his long reach.

I like that we have plenty of hoopers in the 2nd unit, Champagnie, Doug, Malaki, Graham and possibly Keldon. With Mamu and Bassey who can pass, it would be a deep bench.

I like that Vassell was shooting without hesitation. He will be special scoring, but time would tell if he can be as good as a defender. Pop is preaching better defense this year. Expect Pop to shorten the leash and yanking guys not doing their assignments. It’s still not set who will get minutes, so expect guys playing their heart out earning their spot.

Wemby will be fine. That scrimmage was more pick up than organised BB with eveyone calling their own number and wanting to showcase themselves. That's always unfair to big guys who barely see the ball or in bad conditions, just like in pick up games. I've seen a Wemby trying to be available and offering screens that were often ignored.

Come season time, there will be a clear hierarchy and plays called for Wemby. Lots of guys who got some good burn yestarday will barely see the court. I mean, didn't see the whole game, but you know there's a problem when you see only one lob and barely any picknrolls with Vics. That's criminal, but that's what happens in those scrimmage, like it did in Wemby's first SL game. Spurs staff corrected that and Vic scored 27... Those scrimmages mean crap but often make 3rd stringers look good, like Wesley reportedly killing a pre
But that's also why I really believe that team would benefit form a vet PG who can get things right, too many wild horses wanting to be da man over there... Anyway, we should expect a bunch of Devin/Vicotr pnrs during the season.

Fournier already showed in preparation games for the World Cup with France that he isn't washed up at all. He has just been put in the closet by Thib'. Considering his love for the game you can be sure he will give all he has in his future NBA team. And he's still a very good player. I just said bringing a French player could be a good thing for Wembanyama, and also for the Spurs if some of you are afraid he might leave after his rookie contract. But I’d rather have Hayes because he fits the process we’re in.

And since you wrote Hayes, Fournier, etc… Can you tell me which other French player I said I wanted with the Spurs ?

im not shitting on french guys. i just dont think Hayes is a good player and he's had a few NBA years to show notable improvement. the extent of the french angle here is that you understandably have a soft spot for french players and i think its part of the reason you would like to see Hayes

also in that post, you werent generically talking about "french players" as a concept. the whole post was about Fournier. "And he's still a very good player. I agree he doesn't play at a position we need, but bringing in a French veteran next to Wembanyama could be a very good idea"

also in that post, you werent generically talking about "french players" as a concept. the whole post was about Fournier. "And he's still a very good player. I agree he doesn't play at a position we need, but bringing in a French veteran next to Wembanyama could be a very good idea"

it was clearly about Fournier. now saying that you didnt mean you wanted the spurs to add Fournier just seems disingenuous

You’re about to make me believe that I understand English better than you, me, a French guy…

« bringing a French veteran next to Wembanyama could be a very good idea »

If you read correctly, I said that Fournier plays at a position we don’t need. And then I said that brining A French veteran could be a good idea, not specifically Fournier.

Now believe whatever you want, I absolutely don’t give a shit. Even if I wanted Fournier, the way you said that tends to show that I just want French players at the Spurs, whatever their position or talent is, and that I don’t understand shit about basketball.

I have been following this franchise since early 90´s, when you were probably not even born (considering what you say), so clearly you opinion doesn’t matter to me.

I didn’t say you just want French players or that you don’t understand ball. I suggested you were partial to French players, which I’ll stand by. There’s nothing wrong with that. I think looking at the Fournier post and pretending that wasn’t you advocating bringing him over to the spurs is disingenuous at best.

but oh well you are old and that’s the automatic winner in an argument i guess

And would that be surprising for a French citizen to support and prefer French players in the best league in the world ? Of course I follow these guys, but that doesn’t mean I want all of them playing for the franchise I support.

And I’m not the type of guy saying that since I’m older than you you must respect me. Just admit that you message saying « he likes Hayes because he’s French tbqh, also advocated for bringing in Fournier, etc… » was an inappropriate shortcut. You make me look like an idiot who doesn’t get basketball, wether you admit it or not.

No it just says you are partial to French players. Which is fine, and you admitted. Sure i phrased it in a cheeky way. But you still pretending that your Fournier comment wasn’t advocating for the spurs to pick him up isn’t just being snarky, it’s dishonest.
