Spurs Free Agent Target (this past offseason) SG Kevin Tran and the Saigon Heat of the Vietnamese Basketball Association have mutual interest.
As someone of Vietnamese ancestry, Tran would not take up a "foreign player" roster spot, allowing the Saigon Heat maximum flexibility to sign more impactful players with those roster spots. VBA teams are only allowed up to 3 foreign players. Typically, the foreign players are the best players in the league.
We've seen the international game soar to new heights right before our very eyes. Earlier this week, Team USA fell to Lithuania at the FIBA World Games.
...
My resources tell me that Tran met with the Saigon Heat brass within the last month. Any such contract offer would -- of course -- include an NBA opt-out clause. The Spurs have remained relatively conservative this offseason and have not gone after any free agents since landing prized lottery pick Victor Wembayana.
To me, this reminds more and more of the Patty Mills (coincidentally his Spurs player comparison) situation in 2012. Mills played in the CBA in 2012 before signing with the Spurs in March. Mills ended up playing 10 seasons for the Spurs and has a high chance of seeing his number in the rafters one day.
The Georgia Tech product plays with a high motor and can finish with either hand. He is an absolute marksman from 3-point range. Teams cannot help off of him.
...
Potential Depth Chart... (assumes Devonte Graham will be moved before the deadline).
PG: Jones - Tran - Wisely
SG: Vassell - Branham - McDermott
SF: Sochan - Johnson - Bullock
PF: Wembayana - Mamu - Champagnie
C: Collins - Bassey - Barlow
