LeBRON WATCH: Rivalry weekend in Akron
By David Lee Morgan Jr.

THE LOWDOWN: James' legal battles have been put on hold once again. Fred Nance, James' attorney, was scheduled to go to court March 5 for a preliminary and permanent hearing to find out whether James' high school career could continue. But that hearing was postponed until later this month. In January, James was ruled ineligible by the Ohio High School Athletic Association for accepting two “throwback’’ jerseys from a Cleveland-area clothing store.

However, Nance filed and was granted a temporary restraining order a few weeks later and a preliminary and permanent hearing on the matter was scheduled for Feb. 19. But that hearing was also postponed. Meanwhile, James and the St. Vincent-St. Mary team are rolling along in the state tournament.

WHAT'S NEXT: St. Vincent-St. Mary will face Akron Central-Hower Saturday afternoon in a Division II district championship game. This could be the toughest opponent the Irish will face this season. In fact, if there’s any team that can play with and possibly beat St. Vincent-St. Mary, it’s Central-Hower.

This is probably the most highly anticipated game not only in Akron, but in the entire state. St. Vincent-St. Mary critics can’t wait to see "King James" get dethroned so, in some quarters, Central-Hower will be the sentimental favorite. Also, players from both teams were teammates during some point in their early-playing days, they are friends and they play with or against each other all during the summer. There will be no awe factor with Central-Hower.

And there is some bad blood between the two teams. Central-Hower decided not to play St. Vincent-St. Mary during the regular season this year because the two teams couldn’t agree on payout. Central-Hower wanted $10,000, and St. Vincent-St. Mary coach Dru Joyce II was offering a take-it-or-leave-it $6,000 paycheck. Central-Hower accused the Irish of ducking the Eagles, which St. Vincent-St. Mary denied.

This is the game Central-Hower has been waiting for, and no amount of money would compare to the Eagles pulling the upset of the year.

During James' junior year, the Irish defeated Central-Hower, 65-60, in the district title game last year and beat the Eagles by eight points during the regular season. Central-Hower, one of eight Akron public high schools, is led by 6-foot-7 forward Jeremiah Wood, a University of Akron recruit. Wood had 32 points and 19 rebounds in an 83-65 victory over City Series, and entered that game averaging 17.5 and 16.8 rebounds per game.

THE LEBRON TOUR: If his team advances to the state championship, James would play his final high school game on March 22. But he'll be on display long after the Ohio state high school tournament ends.

He is scheduled to play in the McDonald's All-American Classic March 26 at Gund Arena in Cleveland, the Adidas Roundball Classic March 31 in Chicago and the Jordan Capital Classic April 17 in Washington D.C.

BULLETIN BOARD MATERIAL: "I wouldn’t be surprised if we beat them.’’
