View Full Version : Gavin Newsom - Gretchen Whitmer 2028 Democrat ticket ??

Just throwing this out here, 4+ years too early so I can look brilliant down the road when it happens, tbh...
Makes too much sense IMO. Both will have fulfilled two complete terms as Governor and be term limited in 2026. Both were elected by double digits in all five of their combined elections, counting the 2021 recall in CA. Newsom as the POTUS candidate represents California, the nation's leader in population and innovation as well as the highest GDP, even if the right will attack California on its shortcomings. Whitmer as VP candidate provides a huge boost both among the critical suburban woman vote as well as the rust belt, giving Democrats a huge edge in pure-purple Michigan as well as potentially the surrounding critical purple states.
I believe it would usher in a new generation for the Democrats, permanently move the party past the era of Biden/Harris/Clintons et al. with fresh, charismatic, competent faces; and it would be a very difficult ticket for DeSantis or anyone else to defeat, IMO, especially if Trump wins in 2024.

If Trump wins in 2024 he'll try to award himself another term in 2028. There may not even be an election.

Newsom is one of the worst possible candidates Dems could nominate and Whitmer would (understandably) never want to be his running mate.
Hes better than Kamala and Pete Buttplug but not much else.

Whitmer deserves to be at the top of the ticket; she’s done more with extremely slim legislative majorities than Newsom has done with super majorities that’ll pass whatever he wants.

Whitmer
Walz
Shapiro
We have a slew of great names to choose from way better than Newsom.

If it all lines up as planned, they'll go to Clinton and she'll take the 2nd 4 years of the Harris Presidency. Harris will get the remainder of Biden's 2nd 4 years. But of course they've got to get Biden to 1.20.2025 with his right hand up.

He’s accomplished absolutely nothing as California governor. Hasn’t even pretended to address the housing crisis, hasn’t built any reservoirs to solve the water crisis, hasn’t done anything to advance major public transportation projects, doesn’t care that his state is bleeding population, hasnt done anything to reform permitting in CA to make solar projects easier to build, etc.
All he’s done as governor is raise money for his stupid national vanity projects about repealing the 2nd amendment and running worthless ads in Florida during midterm season about how DeSanctus is a big mean bully while Dem turnout in California crashed and played a big role in giving the GOP the house.
He hasn’t done anything to earn the nomination.

My choice right now would probably be Walz FTR.
Normal inoffensive white guy (which sadly makes him a tough sell with the base unless Massa Clyburn endorsed him), has a working class background, represented a district loaded with key Midwestern white voters, and obv most importantly has rammed a pretty liberal tax and spend agenda through the MN state leg despite razor thin majorities, all while the Minneapolis-St. Paul MSA is at 2% inflation.
I’d be thrilled with Whitmer or Shapiro too, but I think Walz has almost no polarizing blemishes for the GOP to focus on.

Interesting.
I do think it would behoove the Dems to get away from identity politics sooner than later, though. I don't think being white or black or brown or male or female should be a consideration, especially if you brand yourself as the party of equal opportunity.
Walz is another two term governor candidate who will be out after 2026 like Whitmer, while Shapiro has eligibility as PA governor until 2030 and doubtful that he'll lose re-election, so there's that.
I just think that Newsom has branded himself as a huge name in politics to the point where him getting the superdelegates and democrat popular vote in the primary would be almost inevitable.

Post a list of Whitmer accomplishments, whether it's 2023 with the narrow Democrat trifecta or 2019-2022 with narrow congressional minorities
I've been to Michigan 4 times this year and read Michigan news all the time and the only thing I've seen so far really is a bill that passed requiring drivers to not text and drive or get fined.
But hey, knowing Michiganders, if the Lions get really far this year or next or god forbid win the Super Bowl, Whitmer will be immortalized as the Governor who got the Lions to the Super Bowl

Whitmer accomplishments:
- repealed right to work laws (this is the first time in 58 years RTW laws have been repealed)
- universal school lunches
- ended surprise medical billing in Michigan
- passed legislation that lowered prescription costs by expanding access to generic drugs
- expanded postpartum Medicaid coverage for low income moms
- invested over $2 billion in water treatment and infrastructure
- invested $3.5 billion in road infrastructure
- eliminated Michigan’s retirement tax
- created property tax incentives to help small businesses
- paid down $14 billion of state debt
- quintupled the state’s earned income tax credit
- Michigan’s credit rating has been upgraded since she took office
That’s a 180 degree turn away from what Michigan has looked like under decades of Republican state legislature control.

Also Whitmer definitely has a national profile when it comes to the Dem base. She doesn’t whore herself around on national TV the way Newsom does, but she’s a national figure who MSNBC and other cable news viewers know about after the COVID stuff, the 2020 elections and the kidnapping plot.
Josh Shapiro doesn’t have the national profile yet but give him time. Unfortunately for him the Dems winning the PA state senate is unlikely so he’s not going to get the opportunities to accomplish much as governor, no different than how Youngkin’s ability to win a GOP primary in 2028 probably hinges on if he gets control of the VA state legislature in a month and has a blank slate to pass conservative policies.

These are all good things.
The right to work issue is kind of 50/50 imo, I mean why should employees be forced to pay a chunk of their salaries to join unions? If anything the employer should pay for it.
For the surprise medical bill thing, that's good for me, hopefully that means I won't have to pay back that $481.00 the DeVos-owned Spectrum Healthcare is still trying to bill me for when I hit that deer in Nov. 2021 and got x-rays and stuff up in Grand Haven, MI the next day.
The retirement tax abolishment is huge, similar to what Kim Reynolds has done in Iowa... but when does it take effect? My mom wants to retire somewhere colder than Texas and we both think MI is absolutely beautiful, weather wise (we are oddballs who love cool and cloudy weather), landscape wise, all the forests etc. But she was worried about the retirement tax and property tax. Also worried about the (D) trifecta and what that means for freedom, the 2nd Amendment (which, frankly, Whitmer hasn't touched, but that's a third rail issue in the hunter's paradise that is MI), vax and mask mandates. We're atheist and more libertarian-populist than anything else. Basically corporations shouldn't get carte blanche to rob the people, especially in the medical industry, moderate to low taxes, and lower gas prices. We're absolutely behind Trump for 2024, but open to voting different ways longer term depending on how the next generation of candidates stand on various issues. We definitely don't support evangelicals, nor the old-guard, free-trade, pro-China GOP.
Yeah Snyder was a fuck. RINO for sure, big-time TDS, was kind of the Mitt Romney of Michigan. Really embodied the worst of both GOP and Democrat/populist worlds. Don't know why he was ever re-elected in 2014 in the first place, especially after the Flint water crisis. Wasn't all his fault, but still, Snyder was about as generic and corrupt as it got. Unsurprisingly there will almost certainly be a >10% Whitmer-Trump voter bloc next year... Tudor Dixon as an establishment conservative with a pretty face is great for Fox News, not so much for governor. She managed to alienate both bases. The MAGA base saw her as a DeVos-funded corporate uniparty shill (who also potentially cheated James Craig and/or others out of the nomination), while the moderates saw her (rightfully) as extremist on abortion.
I also read that Whitmer and the MI Dems actually reduced the state income tax from 4.25% to 4.05%, which is uncharacteristic historically of Democrats. Walz on the other hand will have to eat that shit sandwich that is the roughly 10% state income tax in MN that will certainly be used against him in the primaries. Also, I've heard that governor Jared Polis is planning on reducing or even eliminating the state income tax in Colorado as it's not needed anymore due to all the massive marijuana dispensary revenue.
I guess the dispensaries in Michigan may be paying for all this. It's incredible to think that the Dems are the ones slashing taxes across the board while keeping a reasonable cost of living, fair priced housing throughout the state, keeping good healthcare standards, AND balancing the budget / running budget surpluses. Not just the weed, but also the tourism and natural beauty of the state has a lot to do with the tourist tax revenue, I'd suppose. Michigan I'd argue is one of the 3 most naturally beautiful states as well as Colorado. Also, being pro choice is a good thing, because less unwanted teen pregnancy type welfare babies ending up on welfare and food stamps long term, which drags down the economy.
All of this is a big time sore spot for Gavin Newsom, who sort of embodies what moderates and conservatives stigmatize about California: sky high taxes across the board, homeless amok, extremely high cost of living, bad infrastructure, terrible power grid despite pleasant weather, cultural cesspool infested with illegal alien criminals, lack of water and natural resources.
As for the subject of infrastructure: I will say, with my personal experiences of driving all throughout Michigan (I-94, I-196, I-96, M-6, the M-roads in general, up north, the UP, even the Detroit area) throughout the Whitmer administration years, they have some of the best roads/freeways in the USA with fair speed limits and good traffic laws, so I don't get why so many people from there complain about the roads. The biggest problem about the roads in Michigan is all the goddamn deer which dart across at any opportunity.
So far the MI Dem trifecta have been more moderate/normie than hackish. If they implement school choice like OH/IN/WI/FL/AZ, which isn't exactly a mainstream Democrat platform but it's a majority opinion, I'd root for them to win re-election (state level only).
I do wish MI Dems and Democrats in general would get on board with the school choice thing. It's a majority opinion in the USA, Michigan, and other purple and redder states. Plus, all of MI's surrounding states including blue Wisconsin have school choice, so I don't know why MI wouldn't.
Whitmer's biggest sore spot (but it's hardly just limited to her, it's pretty much every Democrat governor and some GOP governors as well) is how she and other governors acted like a tyrant in 2020 through early 2021 during Covid, but that's not a top 10 issue anymore.
I'm not a huge Whitmer fan over the Covid thing, but I'd probably vote for her over say a Nimrata Haley, Tim Scott, or Mike Pence type. Desantis, who knows.

Oddly enough the Dems are losing pretty big actually in the early vote in the VA 2023 midterms which is a worrisome trend, but it's still too early, perhaps NoVa hasn't been accounted for.

Abortion for sure, but it's not my body so it's not my choice.
I've paid the ~$300 for a couple abortions plus many late night CVS trips to get plan B (I rarely use condoms nor pull out).. majority of women I've slept with have been on the more pro choice side at least at the beginning of the term.
Unfortunately I just so happened to impregnate a traditionalist religious woman who was like 35, baby crazy and crazy pro life.

Not really, he just keeps up with the intricate little details of politics/government more than I do, and he's a good educator, and I appreciate his insights. Honestly he is a better source of news than either, say, LTE, or the New York Times.
I'm surprised LTE didn't come out with a video yet ranking the candidates in the last debate, was really hoping for that. He's more bullish on the Dems in the House for 2024 than I am, personally. Even with the extra Alabama seat, I see the top of the ticket dragging down down-ballot Dems just enough in '24, but I expect the Dems and Jeffries to take the House in '26 assuming Trump wins in '24.
The Bacon's and Schweikert's of the world have one more re-election left in them, and they're toast in a midterm blue wave year with a GOP president incumbent

I don't know a damn thing about the right to work but I have been to MI.
The girls in MI are pretty but with winter gear on, it is hard to determine if they are fat, big boned, or athletic.
Once, when I was in Alaska, I dated an Inuit girl for two weeks before she realized that me buying a burger at the Dairy Queen on consecutive days was my way of saying we were dating. She dumped me right afterwards and did not give me the fries I ordered. Needless to say, I left a complaint to the manager.
I can also make impressively big bucks with my IT skills working from home, I just wish my paycheck from my employer at the Smoothie King in Selma, Tx would reflect that.
I'm not a huge Whitmer fan over the Covid thing, as I know little about covid but girls probably think I sound cool talking about it, who knows.

Gavin - as a California long time resident, it's bad timing to make a Presidential run representing our State. Even to Mid-America Democrats, the current state is too much for Newsome to bare and answer for.
And based on illegal migration estimates, the situation will worsen by election time.

I do think Youngkin would be hard to beat considering his moderate appeal coming from a blue side of purple state. He'd actually be the only GOP candidate with the chance to flip VA back red for the first time since '04. He also has pretty good rust belt appeal having come from a Trump-ish sort of business background, populist stance, running on making school choice federal law, etc. Has solid sun belt appeal too being able to toe the line between capitalist and populist. Met the guy in person a couple times even. He's the real "Trump without the baggage" candidate that DeSantis was supposed to be before his 2023 national collapse, IMO.
If only he could consistently say the word "Michigander" properly, lol.
True story: I actually personally corrected Youngkin on that one when I met him in Lansing last year, because Tudor Dixon didn't have the stones to, unfortunately. I know Dixon personally and think she's a wonderful person and friend but I'm not one to deny that she wasn't a good governor candidate, especially being so green and being so pro-life without exceptions in a mostly secular pro-choice state. I'm very happy for her she's doing well and making good money at Fox News now, it's really her calling much more so than political office. Governor Whitmer absolutely outclassed her in the general election, not just on funding but also experience and abortion, and it was the perfect storm for Whitmer with the pro-choice ballot measure (proposition 3) effectively serving as the top of the ticket. I do believe Dixon would have had an outside chance without the Dobbs v Jackson ruling and I believe there would have been plenty more Governor and a few Senate flips in 2022 if not for Dobbs, but it is what it is.
As for Brian Kemp, I think he would defeat Ossoff head-to-head in 2026, even if Trump wins in '24 and the overall '26 environment leans blue wave, the Dems flip the House et al... and I think that's the direction for which Kemp is headed. I doubt he seriously wants to run for POTUS or even VP.
fify
Much better
That's frankly hilarious even if at my expense, especially the Alaska part (AK is laughably actually one of the two states I've never been to, but if I did meet a girl there, I'd take her to The Pump House in Fairbanks, not fucking fast food), but your meme is dying.
If you dont think AOC will be on the ticket in 2028,,,,youre not paying attention,,,in fact the democrats may go an all women minority ticket of Michelle Obama/AOC,,,,but rest assured,,,the democrats will pick AOC as a running mate over Whitmer,,,,no doubt about it,,,,
She won't be. She's way too polarizing. Moderates despise her.
If Trump wins in 2024 he'll try to award himself another term in 2028. There may not even be an election.
Also, this is bogus.
If (likely) Trump wins next year, he likely goes scorched earth on policy the first two years with slim but sure House and Senate majorities, jacks up tariffs and interest rates, builds an impenetrable southern border, re-instates a heavy nationalist energy production policy including mega drilling and fracking, lowers gas prices back to 2019 levels, potentially pushes for universal school choice, and perhaps exacts some legal revenge on those who have tried to prosecute him. He will remain extremely popular with his fans, and loathed by his detractors. However, the idea that he'll outright do away with democracy and voting is ludicrous. There are special measures in place to prevent this, and even the U.S. Military would turn against him if he actually tried to become a dictator. This is not in any way constitutional nor a plausible scenario. Once the Dems take back the House in '26 Trump will have to moderate a bit so he knows he realistically will have 2 years to get done everything he has ever wanted to do as President of the USA. Once he clocks in to the Oval Office on January 21, 2025, the "MAGA Agenda" clock will be ticking, tickety-tock.

Newsom had done quite a bit on the housing stuff. They basically abolished single family zoning. Look up SB9
he’s been adamantly anti-nimby
passed a bill allowing developers do build residential units in commercial zoned arenas as long as certain percentage of units are low income housing and need zero special permission or permits to do so
Expedited the draining environmental review process of large residential developments
Weird you brought that up since he’s been extremely aggressive there. It does take time for those effects to be felt. Lifting restrictions is the government step. It is and will continue to lead to new construction, increased supply of units, but that’s not going to happen with the stroke of a pen

do debates really move the needle?
not rhetorical.
not just the debates themselves. But generally when he’s in front of a camera he tends to come off well. tv spots etc. when he gets exposure he comes across wel. That’s been desantis’ Achilles heel. Republicans were warm to the idea of him but the more they see him the more turned off they are. Newsom is the opposite.
yes if people just hear “liberal governor from California” they’re going to have some immediate biases which imo he can overcome with exposure
look up his spot with hannity from a couple of months ago for instance.

i am not disagreeing with ANY of your assertions…
but Newsom would
WIN ELECTIONS!
i wont go into ALL the reasons except ONE;
OP and the entire GOP is already so terrified of newsom running that they start threads, put him on hannity to try and knock him down, set him up to debate ron defascist, etc
Newsom would win two prez elections for dems just based on the retarded usa electorate going for youth, vitality, presentation, etc

Yet, most everybody loves him in Cali. Completely ran the board both on his recall petition and re-election.
Also, he knows how to play the political game. He aligned himself right behind Old Joe because he knows he'll need him to support him when he runs.

I wouldn’t say he ran the board in his re-election. In his recall election he absolutely did (his opponent being a generic Token A. Frican helped) but in 2022 he got less than 60% of the vote which is a mediocre at best result for a Dem in California (Jerry Brown managed to get to 60% as an incumbent in 2014 despite it being a much worse year for Ds than 2022).
My bigger issue with him is that he didn’t do any campaigning in 2022 which led to horrid Dem turnout in important house races (the two Central Valley seats Dems almost won probably go blue if Newsom did a minimal amount of campaigning). We can’t afford another Dem president who’s not a team player in down ballot elections - imo people don’t realize how much the 2010 and 2014 bloodbaths set Dems back (specifically how Obama left office with the GOP almost having control of enough state legislatures to call a constitutional convention).
Also Newsom comes off well as a speaker to you, me and Spurraider21 because we’re all liberal elitists, but I don’t see him being the mercurial Obama or Clinton type speaker who puts things in terms simplified enough for the shit for brains voters we needed to win. He also just doesn’t seem interested in governing and I care about the president actually wanting to pass his agenda after he wins (Obama’s electoral talent with Biden’s determination to pass legislation would be ideal). Even if spurraider is right that he’s been proactive on the housing costs (the results aren’t there and if I had to guess it’s because of the low income unit requirement that a lot of developers are allergic to) there’s countless other things he has the power to address and doesnt. He claims to be leading the charge on climate change yet since the IRA passed Texas is crushing California in terms of solar capacity added to its grid and that’s 100% because of bureaucracy and utilities making permitting impossible.
I should caveat this by saying that if my choice in 2028 is between him, Kamala and Pete Buttplug, I’ll be thrilled if we dodge a bullet and end up with him instead of either albatross.

Not saying he's my #1 choice, but let's be realistic here. He's one of those guys that could've stepped up and challenged Joe right now, instead he played ball, because he sees big picture.
He also read early on that doughy DeathSantis was a phony. He's also one of the few Dems that has zero problem throwing it down against any of the other MAGA losers like Abbott.
All I'm saying is that after looking at him operate here for ~4 years, I can see he's not just a good speaker, he's also a very savvy political player.

I agree with you on this for the most part, Newsom way underperformed in '22. The recall election occurred in mid-2021 when Biden still had a slightly positive favorability rating, just before Afghanistan IIRC.
The power grid is equally terrible in both Texas and California. Texas does have better, more consistent wi-fi / cell service reception. Every time I've been in CA my phone goes wonky and has to do a reset because of the terrible signal there, if you're not literally in LA or the populated parts of the Bay Area. Michigan does have a slight problem with that as well, when you get out of the cities and suburbs. Even in Ann Arbor city limits, which is a very populated and very liberal place, the cell service is godawful.
California is an economic shithole and Michigan is a purple state success story with Democrat leadership since 2019, and Rick Snyder was pretty much universally known to be ineffective for the MI GOP. The gas prices and taxes aren't insane and Whitmer Dems have actually managed to LOWER state income tax. I do believe Whitmer at top of the ticket in the debates can campaign on being fiscally center right and populist and socially moderately progressive but not alt-left, which is probably the majority opinion. Michigan as a whole is drifting (not zooming) towards the right considering demographics, but, 2022 proved that it's still a forever pro-choice state and with Whitmer at the top of the ticket, MI is all but guaranteed to go blue at the presidential level. With Whitmer as Newsom's VP pick I still think it's enough for MI to go blue but not by much.
