[Spurs Target] SG Kevin Tran exercising NCAA 5th year/NIL; enters transfer portal

According to multiple sources, SG Kevin Tran, a former Spurs target, is headed back to the NCAA to play out a 5th year of eligibility (granted to him during the lost 2020 season due to the global COVID19 pandemic). As a graduate transfer, he would be able to play immediately.

My sources also tell me that he was recently on an official recruiting trip at Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech plays in the ACC, which is widely considered to be the best conference in college basketball. He has recruiting trips with Clemson and UNC in the upcoming weeks.

It was widely speculated that Tran and his camp were monitoring the Damian Lillard situation in Portland "very closely" and that it would be the first big domino to fall. When Boston went after Jrue Holiday this past weekend, the PG/SG market dried up for Tran, leading to his decision to exercise his 5th year of NCAA eligibility.

Due to the recent explosion of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), Tran is posed to make even more money at the collegiate level than he would be as a mid-level NBA player. He survives the workout. But the two sides are too far a part on a deal, and they are surprised he explores opportunities overseas and NCAA where he can make way more money and the team isn't trying to tank.
