A few things to take away from the game last night but there's one particular play that stuck out to me. It happened in the 4th quarter at the 9:05 mark. Wemby grab a rebound off of a Vassell missed 3pt attempt and after grabbing the rebound, he instantly went into a power dribble back down against a much smaller Watanbe. He eventually ended up getting fouled with an and 1. That was my first time seeing him back down a much smaller defender with power and aggression and most importantly, control. He didn't think about any moves other than back him down with aggression and get to the hoop.

I hope some of his teammates get into his ear that he can do this everytime he gets the ball in the paint. I think that play will help him realize that he's much more powerful than the smaller defenders that's guarding him down there and that he can get many more easier baskets. I know he's not naturally a low post player but hopefully he'll learn that he has to be against much smaller defenders. It's the big guys that you can take out on the perimeter and try to take to the hole off the dribble.

Shaq also brought up a great point at halftime. Even when Wemby has great position in the paint off of a fastbreak or rim run, he tends to eventually drift out to the perimeter if he doesn't get the ball right away, vs sealing off his defender and holding his position under the basket until someone throws the ball to him. Again, I know these are things that will come with experience but it was great to see that power back down with aggression last night. I'm waiting to see if he'll try it Thursday night but I think he found it with that play.

Wemby usually only drifts out in those situations when they go to the complete opposite end of the court...

His handling of that play was great. He's really a natural small forward who wants the ball on the perimeter. As he develops, he'll get stouter and more capable down low.

I heard a story years ago about how Glen “Big Dog” Robinson taught David Robinson the fine art of posting up by backing David down the full length of the court. Wemby needs his own Big Dog to give him some lessons.

kenny also pointed out that this season, or at least the first half of it, is about Wemby getting a feel for how teams play him but that he will acclimate to each team and with grow more comfortable as the season progresses. Shaq also mentioned all the things he learned and got better at during or after his rookie year.

One of our internationals pointed out that his nickname was diesel, because he takes a while to get running. He’s a closer, though, and that’s a good thing.

I think the idea is that it's just a drill for getting more comfortable with playing back to basket, not that he would literally back down the entire court in a game.

I'd rather a fourth quarter player than a first quarter player.

If Spurs players are getting in Wemby's ear it's just to ask him to pass them the ball so they can shoot

Was much more aggressive on the block and around the basket tonight. He found it!! He realized they can't handle him and it showed!!
