On Wed Nov 22nd, Gregg Popovich grabbed the arena mic in the middle of two free throws and asked the home crowd to stop booing Kawhi. The booing wasn't even audible, basically just your run of the mill booing when the opponent is shooting free throws.
What. the. actual. fuck. :lmao :lmao :lmao

What's telling is that he made the booing MUCH MUCH worse after that stunt. So you now have fans in open rebellion of the face of the franchise for the last 25 years. And for a guy like neph? Like neph GAF or will respect you more for that....
Sorry Pop, but you don't get to tell Spur fans how to feel about a guy that hid in closets to avoid talking to you and who refused to sit next to his teammates on the bench for home games
So cringe on so many levels. Worst of all is your new franchise guy just saw it all.

The only think I can imagine going through Pop's head that would make this make any sense is if the Spurs are going to try to go after Kawhi once his contract is up. MAYBE if there's another vet star the Spurs may want to try for who might think the Kawhi booing is bad. If Pop is trying some sly recruiting, good on him. Otherwise, it seems like weird timing more than anything. I think he saw that he doesn't have the good will in SA that he might think he does.

The franchise icons with their jerseys in the rafters need to collectively tell Pop that they won’t show up if his jersey is raised. Muhsin Kenon was a 20/10 guy multiple times, and a two time NBA All Star and never had his jersey retired because he was a ‘clubhouse lawyer’. Kawhi was a lot worse than that.
I wonder if Pop had a senior moment thinking he was in LA when he told the fans not to boo.

I don't actually agree with that. Kawhi 100-percent cares what people think about him. Nothing about the Leonard drama of 2018 suggests dude has thick skin. He doesn't show a lot of emotion, but bro definitely feels them if you've paid attention to all of his comments over the years. LAC is on the verge of blowing their team up, and guys may find themselves in need of a new club. The Spurs certainly aren't operating like a team trying to play the 2024 free-agent market, but they could definitely open up a max slot if they had a reason to.

I don’t think any of that was on Pop’s mind… I mean am not a mind reader so who knows? But it seems more like a case of old man yells at cloud… and also the kind of thing where you are already upset about something else, like your team having a bad low effort game, a players only meeting where you know there’s frustration… and you are already irritable and a harmless thing that has happened many times before just tips you over the edge. You know? Maybe I am not explaining myself well but I don’t think there’s any rationality in it.
Pop will eventually even alienate the sniffer crew and his fans (yes, Pop has his fans people, don’t act like this is anything new).

I don't see why Kawhi would want to go to a lottery team. and leave LA
He's taken the whole "it's just basketball" thing way too far. The whole point of sports is competition and he's been losing his competitive edge over the years. This feels like that monumental moment where the majority realizes he's lost it. Even fans that adore him. Sadly, it's time to take him out back.

Just watched Pop’s press conference. Two thought: (1) total dick to the media but he lectures Spur fans on class; (2) shows he’s weak by not answering for his stupid in game rant at fans.
Don’t poke the bear is BS. Why didn’t he say the same thing when fans booed Shaq and Kobe? Those were Kodiak bears. The Clippers are koala bears. Obviously he was working up an excuse for such a stupid comment. You think Kawhi isn’t trying hard until he hears boos? You think your players are so soft they can’t handle our fans booing the other team? Should we remove the “make some noise” prompts on the jumbotron?

Why didn’t he say the same thing when fans booed Shaq and Kobe?
Pop did this sort of crap before when Kobe was on trial for rape, something about wanting fans to be respectful and not boo or go overboard or something. It wasn't during a game as I remember, he was still somewhat involved in coaching. But I could be wrong.
As usual, Pop was worried about how the fans were treating Kobe instead of figuring out how to not get destroyed 4-0 after being up 2 games on the Lakers.

Stupid move by Pop but spurs fans are so fuckin beta snowflake to still give a shit about Kawhi
Tbh what else were they going to get passionate about!? The team was already shifting the bed on the way to another loss. Let fans have some fun.
Two things
1. He's lost his competitive edge. That's incredibly soft to want to protect Nephew's feelings.
2. He has way too much job security. Nobody has ever seen this bc most other coaches would have some explaining to do to ownership.
Either way you don't want that kind of guy leading your rebuild. He's the biggest problem atm.

For some reason the fans were booing Harden almost as badly as Number Two. What did I miss?

:pop: “See how nice I am to Kawhi? See how much I care about him, and try to protect him? You can see for yourselves that I can’t possibly be the reason he left. You can see very clearly he couldn’t have left because of me. He’d never leave because of somebody who’s so wonderful to him. It’s obvious, isn’t it? You do see that, don’t you? Don’t you?”

This season is primarily about two things:
1) Wembanyama's development
2) Roster evaluation
So it doesn't concern me that they lose games. These guys are not a playoff team regardless of coaching.
What does concern me is how they get blown out regularly, play shitty defense, and pass like blind kids at basketball camp. It's still early in the season, but that's hard to comprehend unless this is Tank 2.0.
Then to admonish the fans for booing Kawhi of all people? WTF, GTFOOH, and so on. I'm glad they kept booing.

I don't think people have a problem with him having views. It's that, much like last night, he speaks in absolutist terms as though he is the only one allowed to have a view point and everyone else who disagrees with him is fundamentally and absolutely wrong.
It's this narcissistic arrogance that he continually demonstrates from everything he speaks on, how he treats reporters who dare ask him a question, he's just a grade A narcissistic prick. And those people tend to fall the hardest at the end, and last night feels like the beginning of the end.

The scumbag needed to apologize instead of turning on the media and straight lying.

That said, I do think Pop's heart is in the right place. Kawhi is a bitch and did the Spurs dirty, but Pop is probably the last person on Earth to hold a grudge for it.
He helped build Leonard into the player that he was/is, so imagine someone booing your little kid out on the court or field. Maybe it's a bit soft, but it was a kind gesture to show Kawhi he still cares...and if you watch this video, it looks like Kawhi had to wipe away some tears after their little discussion.

To be honest most companies have very strict rules when it comes to discussing their Political views at the workplace
True, but most companies don't have one of the most successful employees in their respective areas, either.
Do you think anyone was going to try to tell Steve Jobs or Bill Gates from stating their political views? If they tried, they'd be packing up their desk at the end of the day.
Not saying Pop is above scrutiny...nobody should be. But for better or worse, he has a tenure as one of the best coaches in the NBA (if not all sports), so yes...I'm sure he gets a little leeway in these areas for better or worse.
Also, NBA is the "woke" league and actually seems to encourage players and coaches to talk about social issues, so it's not like it's totally out of left field.
Pop was just trying to rattle Kawhi at the line, make sure Kawhi got it they were booing him. Kicker icing 101.

I noticed that also, and in the tone of Kawhi’s voice, he seems affected by Pop’s kind gesture. Anyway, Kawhi is still an ungrateful biyotch and deserving of the booing from the fans for what he did. Also the players feed off from the fans, both of their applauding and booing of the opponents. It’s very much part of watching sports live and what makes it fun. I normally agree with Pop, but last night he was wrong. Still that action doesn’t mean that Pop is the wrong man for the job. He’s the only coach in the league who will not be pressured by the Wemby circus, and he will wait for Wemby to get stronger before making moves. Couch GM’s and fair weather fans of course are just so happy they can use to troll with. Pathetic :lol

Joe Paterno had an assistant who raped little boys in the locker room. The fans already turned on Pop for the horrible performance of this team, and this microphone thing is likely his attempt to deflect, because Kawhi has played a dozen games in SA and he's always been booed.

This is rich coming from Stephen A Smith, one of the biggest hypocrites at ESPN. Dude will say whatever it takes to give him more screen time and try to boost ratings.
Pop's personality with the media is a schtick. He knows he has to deal with them and learned that it's easier to play the "hardass coach" role than answer the same stupid questions during and after games.
Notice how SAS also calls out how Pop goes around restaurants and hands out cash to all the workers for big dinners.
My nephew once ran into Pop at a bar and decided to buy him a beer, and Pop sat and talked to him for a good 20-30 minutes instead of just brushing him off as a geeking fan. Imagine being a GOAT coach and still taking the time to sit and converse with some random kid who brings you a beer.

I still can understand the coaches approach to some of the things. Until Victor knows how to play better, there's no real obvious leader on the team, and so for the players to figure it out, part of that includes figuring out who's going to assume a leadership role. And I also think they do need to learn how to figure out their own hierarchy a little bit under Victor. But where I disagree is on defense. Defense is all about coaching and their defense is horrible and to me that is in excusable

Until Victor knows how to play better, there's no real obvious leader on the team, . . .
One of the benefits of having such a young roster is that it will allow Victor to take a leadership role earlier on. If there was even one high-end vet on the team that would be an almost impossible task.
Defense is all about coaching and their defense is horrible and to me that is in excusable
This is a league of offense-based players. Therefore, in the NBA, defense is mostly responsibility and effort.
There is no reason this team should be this bad defensively and that does reflect on the coach.

Windhorst mentioned Pop handing out money at restaurants. Pop is a major figure in professional sports and has put himself out there with political commentary and this latest fuckery. It's Smith's job to comment on what happens in sports, and yes, Pop isn't the epitome of class when it comes to his demeanor with other people trying to do their jobs. Pop is like someone you'd work with who has been retiring for 3 years, doesn't come to work most of the time and even when he does, he's flippant and dismissive but won't be fired because he has 45 years of dirt on people.
