DENVER — A day after the Heat's best road victory of the season — Friday's 98-87 win at Sacramento — there was more good news.

Center Shaquille O'Neal, who has missed 15 games with a sprained right ankle, said he'll practice Tuesday and could play in Wednesday's game at San Antonio.

"I'm going to practice Tuesday and see how hard I can go, and the true test is always the next day after that," he said. "We'll just wait until Tuesday and then we'll just see what happens."

The theory on O'Neal has been that he'll most likely return for one of Miami's next two home games, either Dec. 9 against Denver or Dec. 11 against Washington, and that still seems probable.

Should that not happen, O'Neal said he'll take as much time as he needs, and won't have extra motivation to return for the Christmas Day game against his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I just want to get back out there with the guys and try to complete what we want to get done," he said. "I'm not going to let that particular game influence me to come back because it's not that important to me, especially on that day."

O'Neal said he still hasn't tried to move from side to side, but said he's about "85 percent" healthy going straight ahead.

"I have orders from the powers not to come back until I'm 100 percent," O'Neal said. "Strict orders."

While O'Neal recovers, the Heat is doing fine with 35-year-old Alonzo Mourning at center. Mourning, the league leader in blocked shots at 4.1 per game, had seven blocks against the Kings.

"He's the best center in the league right now," O'Neal said of Mourning. "He's playing well, very impressive out there. A guy his age, a guy in his condition, it's just a joy to watch."

Mourning also had 12 points against the Kings, but his most impressive work continues to be on defense. He was dunked on by Sacramento's Shareef Abdur-Rahim, but blocked Abdur-Rahim's shot three times.

Mourning was so impressive that Kings guard Bonzi Wells said it almost made him wish O'Neal were in the middle.

Miami's back court of Dwyane Wade (27 points, seven assists) and Jason Williams (20 points, eight assists) powered Miami's offense. But so did shooting 11-for-21 on three-pointers and hitting 15 of 18 free throws.

And in winning back-to-back road games for the first time this season, Miami also outrebounded and outhustled Sacramento.

"Overall the last three games we've defended harder, we've rebounded better and I think we're taking it more seriously," coach Stan Van Gundy said.

In layman's terms, keep an eye peeled for Shaq in uniform on Wednesday. If he does play on Wednesday, then the Spurs will have a little more difficulty beating the Heat at the SBC Center.

It will be interesting on how they deal with Mourning's minutes. He was huge for Miami's defense so far this year. I gues he will be benched.

It would probably be good for him if he WERE benched for a bit. He's not supposed to be playing these kinds of minutes.

Cuz...the report says he could return on Wednesday...and he like, plays for the Miami Heat...and the Spurs play against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, so that makes it Spurs-related...I even put in bold text the section in the article that is Spurs-related.

Just like it must amuse him to see Kobe lose many games without him. Kobe is not a winner, he just rode Shaq's fat coattails to some championships.

I thought he was coming back about this time anyways. I figured he would want to come back for this game. Especially since he hates SA just as much as we hate him. But Im glad he is coming back. No excuses for Miami after we beat them.

Actually, I have a few friends that were at the game and they said there was a lot of people boo'ing him. Of course, the media won't show that.

UPDATE ALERT! UPDATE ALERT!

Shaq practices, WON'T play against Spurs

Source: Sun Sentinel.com (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-1206heat,0,7357025.story?coll=sfla-sports-front)

SAN ANTONIO -- As Heat center Shaquille O'Neal took a step forward, Antoine Walker has decided to step back and reassess his game.

Sidelined by a sprained right ankle since the Nov. 3 home opener, O'Neal participated in practice Tuesday for the first time since training camp.

"It went pretty good. Obviously I've got to get my wind back and in game shape," he said of the late-afternoon session at the SBC Center. "It kind of tingled. We can get over that. I think the ligaments have healed."

While O'Neal ruled himself out of Wednesday's nationally televised game against the defending-champion Spurs, he was encouraged by the full-speed session with the team's second-tier players.

Walker, by contrast, is growing increasingly perplexed by the direction of his season, especially in his role as a second-team, perimeter-oriented power forward.

"I just can't get it done, for whatever reason," he said in the wake of his 0-for-10 shooting in Monday's late 99-89 loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles. "It's a whole different process for me, everything. It's going to take some time."

Walker and most of the veterans skipped Tuesday's session, having arrived in San Antonio at 4 a.m. Also missing was coach Stan Van Gundy, who was ill.

Instead, O'Neal participated in a series of 3-on-3 fastbreak sprints with Michael Doleac, Jason Kapono, Gerald Fitch, Dorell Wright and Shandon Anderson.

"I thought it was a good first day," Doleac said of O'Neal's 90-minute session. "He's definitely not in his best shape. He's definitely sucking wind a little bit. But he's still as strong as ever, as big as ever."

O'Neal regretted not being available for tonight's lone regular-season visit, having played his high school ball in San Antonio, but added of the path to a potential NBA title, "If everything works out, we'll be back."

While O'Neal addresses his physical woes, Walker said he needs to take stock of his game.

Against the Clippers, Walker reverted to launching too many 3-pointers. He also failed to make it to the foul line, with his inside attempts taken more with finesse than force. The performance resembled his 1-of-13 outing earlier in the season against Dallas.

"I'm not posting up as much as I used to," he said of his long-time role with the Celtics. "I've got to try to find different ways to score. So I try to attack the basket -- and I can't get any calls."

Clippers forward Walter McCarty, who spent five seasons with Walker in Boston, could tell his former teammate is going through a difficult adjustment.

"Antoine can kill in the low post,'' McCarty said. "I don't care who's guarding him. He's just not getting opportunities. You've got guys over there who can play, who are probably even better in the low post. "It's big challenge for him. Boston was a whole different system. It's something he's got to work on and try to make the best of. He's a good enough player. He should be able to find his niche." Asked if he would approach Van Gundy, Walker said, "If it comes to that. I don't know. I'm going to try to figure it all out. It's a different role." As for O'Neal, Tuesday's session moved him closer to supplanting Alonzo Mourning as the starting center. But he continued to downplay the possibility of a return this week. "Couple more practices, couple more treatments and we'll see," he said. "I don't think I'm game-ready yet. My timing was off and my wind wasn't game-ready. Practice-ready and game ready are two different type of readies."

Ladies and Gentlemen, there you have it!

Shaq will NOT be playing in the Heat's only regular-season appearance at the SBC Center.
