I’m just curious the timeline we have to surround him with a playoff calibur team. When would the Spurs normally extend him? When would he be a restricted or unrestricted FA if his camp didnt accept any extensions from the Spurs? I think questions on alot of our minds. How much time do we have to develop players or bring in a free agent via trade or offseason before Wemby wants and can get out of San Antonio? I think we’re finally trending in the right direction and about 2 solid players away from atleast a playoff contender but i think i just got Kawhi ptsd.

He will get a MAX extension after year 3 which kicks in after year 4. If he will meet the criteria, it will be a SUPERMAX. There won’t be any negotiation, much like with Tim. They’ll just write up a contract for the most money and years possible.

If this happened, which would be a major disaster, Wemby would be a RFA in the summer of 2027.

Technically, he could sign an offer sheet which the Spurs would immediately match, but in reality if he is doing this it is because he wants out, so he won't be signing any offer sheet and he will likely have already told the FA he is demanding a trade. Short of that, he would play the 27-28 season under the QO and then be an UFA in the summer of 2028.

More likely scenario, if he really wants out, is he still signs the largest extension possible and then demands a trade.

The most likely scenario is that the Spurs start building the team, Wemby is happy, and is with us through his first 9 seasons at a bare minimum.

That was under a much older version of the CBA, where you could be unrestricted after 3 years. Unless you sign the year 5 QO, it will be season 8 or 9 before UFA.
