View Full Version : 250K San Antonio residents still live at or below the poverty line

Nearly half of San Antonians either cannot cover basic expenses or are one financial emergency away from not being able to afford necessities, according to a new local community survey.

The city’s “community wellbeing survey,” collected over two months between mid- November 2022 and late January 2023, informed a portion of the city’s latest Status of Poverty Report, which also collects U.S. Census Bureau statistics regarding the population living under the federal poverty level...."

The ugly downtown areas and really poor parts of old San Antonio they're trying desperately to gentrify still look like shit and money from the Northside has left to participate in that gentrification or moved outside of the city, so even the parts that were nice and liveable 20 years ago look shitty.

Coming back to California...despite the politics and slight increase of cost of living...a whole lot of Cali trash has been forced out and it seems a lot chose to go be poors in Texas and California is much, much better than it was 15, 10 and even just 5 years ago.

Education that allows one to find a job that can even out this uneven distribution of wealth.
Unfortunately "hot wheels" seems intent on creating a crappy education system.
People have no idea how much worse public education can get.

Hot Wheels is actually attacking Republican superintendents and politicians in rural areas that will not get his almighty private schools, some of which will absolutely take taxpayer money without having to adhere to State laws that hurt public school. He is going to use PUBLIC money to make schools that dont have to adhere to State laws. Mind boggling.

The only difference with red states is that Calii doesn't throw them in jail, pretend they're not there, don't count them and try to hide them. There's a huge housing problem, which is real and it's not just in California. And that, we're told, is the free market at work.

But there's absolutely a housing problem that needs to be addressed, sure. Now, no one does poor people and crime like red states, including Texistan.

I live in LA, tbh... I lived 20 years in NJ and the amount of homeless you see here now is not much different from what you saw in Manhattan 20 years ago. Living in big cities with high costs of living comes with that.

#1 complaining are the typical NIMBYS that don't give a shit about the homeless, they just don't want their $45 million property value to come down.

It's exactly what you said, they got displaced. Especially after Rudy pretty much threw them all in jail when he criminalized sleeping on the street. They're back now. Adams is pulling the same stunt and being criticized for it.

The difference between NY and CA is that CA is a much larger State. The thing is, with very few exceptions, nobody living in rural towns make what you make in the city, and that's just a reality.

You're just not going to get affordable housing in Manhattan or West LA. North Jersey grew and eventually gentrified with the workers from the city. But once that area (except Trenton) got expensive too, where do you go?

Housing is a big, big problem, but even more so when everybody wants to live in or near the big city. This really isn't a new problem.

gentrification is one thing but too significant proportion of the single family housing pool is owned by corporations. just more speculatory greed from the usual fucks.

Texistan ranks #2 with welfare recipients in the nation, who are you kidding? lmao

You forgot California also being the #1 economy in the nation by a long, long mile... contributing their fare share with #1 in federal taxes collected also by a long mile (unlike moocher Texistan that only ranks #3, less than tiny New York).

lmao @ rich people leaving... California ranks #1 with 186 billionaires, Texistan not even top 3, with less than half of that (73). We're talking different leagues here.

Sure, California is an expensive state to live in, tbh. You can't make it here without an education, knowing how to read and write, etc. If you can't do any of that, there's always Texistan...

YES the climate.
That is what I am talking about you fkn homebound potted plant

You are totally clueless. There are homeless people "all over" San Antonio you fk tard. I can tell you exactly where to go but you wont.
The southern part of the Leon Creek bicycle trails.
Yes BIKES. And SKIING. AND FISHING. AND CAMPING. AND HIKING. Yes its a huge part of what I do.

"What? YOU would go somewhere because bicycle trails? YOU would go somewhere because of the climate?"

YES. You miserable old homebound dolt.

Seriously Spurstalk peeps. The outside, the air and climate are a HUGE consideration now more than ever. Our summers, even for a very "inshape" person are nightmarish. Its getting really difficult. For those of you who only "go to the gym" good for you. There are people who like to go outside. If I was retired and had to live in SA I would leave during the summer. Find a rental or something where I could get outside with the exercise and such. These inside lives like tread and hemihead live... depressing. I also like Bend Oregon but I just cant do it now. Work calls.

I lived in Santa Barbara for five years. There's like a six week rainy season then it's pretty much climate controlled the rest of the year. Must be lived to be believed.

BoomerFairy is just so stunningly miserable and it's too late for him to improve his personal situation. He can't believe people can be happy and actively doesn't want anyone to be.

Even if the show "PSYCH" wasn't really filmed in Santa Barbara, I imagine they got as close to duplicating it's vibe as possible. Might be pricey compared to Texas, but it looks like a great place, tbh.

Honestly I do think the people are a bit less friendly than SA.
But with all the outdoor stuff to do hard to beat Mediterranean climates.

I like LA. Visit a couple times a year and stay at the marina and mostly hang out in Culver City. There are a ton of options for great food and entertainment. homeless are a given but not really a bigger issue than here in SA.

One big difference I see in LA is they let old POS RV's park on the street for people to live in.

Most of the locations I recognized were down the coast from Carpenteria (their office) to Ventura/Oxnard. A little downscale but same weather. Probably much easier for production.

Nothing stupid about questioning money management.

Who do you think the state targets with the lottery? The rich?

What matters is who is stupid enough to keep pissing away money on them. If the 'poor' had better habits, many would be in much better shape. That's not the State's fault, not the fault of the rich, or our fault.

Why do you think this is solely a money management issue? :lol

I also find it funny how conservatards change their tune all the time over this stuff. When rural white conservatives used to be the rich and powerful and somebody questioned it, it was Class Warfare!!!!!

Now that they've become fodder to the white rich and powerful liberals, the new tune is Da Hollywood Elite!!! and they're to be hated because they are rich and powerful.

...and proponents of murdering President Trump. I've learned though just to take the best, El, like with LeBron (that last ring) he grudged White and dismiss him with: "Shut the fuck up, rock head, and just fuckin' dirbble!" That keeps him yet...still on the "plantation" and still Black.

Hollywood? They'll push out a winner once in a coon's age and sure it comes up a 100 years short of White Hollywood, but, hey, El; it's better than NOTHING.

What was the point of anyone writing the article at all?

Imo, it's a bad problem that goes back to how sorry minimum wages are for anyone willing to put in a 40 hour+ work week, no matter where they are working. I think it's basically just two sides to it. You either agree with that or you say "if they don't like their wages then they should work better at finding a higher paying job"

Conservatives are always trying to pass off structural issues like poverty and underpaid workers as personal failings of character or judgment, no surprise to see that again here. Ignoring population level effects of policy/law is thematic, they personalize everything.

there are few things that epitomizes white trash culture better than the "you are not better than me" inferiority complex. You see it from the tenements of South Boston to the trailerparks of Bakersfield.
