Mercedes-Benz is turning to robots to handle “repetitive” and physically demanding tasks on the assembly line. The German carmaker will test humanoid Apollo robots made by Texas-based Apptronik, amid a shortage of “reliable workers.” The robots will help save automakers money because investing in automation is less expensive than changing production lines or plant layouts. Labor unions are against using humanoid robots, claiming the move toward automation will eliminate jobs. AI-powered robotics could replace human workers, such as masseuses, per Semafor, but they could also create new jobs and prompt a reimagining of the workplace.
