As expected. Well-deserved. One of the 5 greatest Rookie seasons in NBA history for the generational talent. Spurs are stupid lucky to have this kid.

Unanimous too**. Only the 6th player ever to accomplish that feat. Wild.

Nice, whether or not it would be unanimous was the only question mark outstanding. Good to see some of the Chet stans came to their senses.

Should be 7 though, tbh (with 3 of the 7 being Spurs). Still can't believe three fucking people voted Keith Van Horn over Timmy :lol

Only players ever to be named ROY Unanimously:

Ralph Sampson
David Robinson
Blake Griffin
Damian Lillard
Karl Anthony-Towns
Victor Wembanyama

Another milestone for the kid.

1 year into his career, Wemby’s already done something Tim never did. Hopefully at some point he accomplishes another thing that Timmy never did, back to back titles for the Spurs!

Ask R.C. Buford when he first saw Wembanyama in action and the response is instantaneous.“May 4, 2019,” blurts the chief executive officer of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, the seventh position Buford has held in 34 years with the San Antonio Spurs organization. “He was 15 years old. There was nobody else in the gym. It was somewhere in France, but not Paris.”
A phone call from the Spurs’ head of international scouting, Claudio Crippa, is what put Buford on a flight to Paris and then on a drive to see Wembanyama playing for Nanterre 92. The only observers, other than personnel of the two teams, were Crippa and Buford.

Victor Wembanyama lives up to outrageous hype: ‘He’s a one-off as a player’ - The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/5428002/2024/05/06/spurs-victor-wembanyama-rookie-achievements/)

More surprising than Wendy get unanimous rookie of the year is Scoot not even getting top 6. At one point last year many had him 1b to Wendy’s 1a.

We all know Chet really won the award. ROY has historically gone to the best rookie on the best team. Who cares that Victor is multiple tiers above Holmgren as a player? What matters is winning. Rookies are supposed to lead their teams to the playoffs, and as we all know, the Spurs had the same winning percentage without Wemby on the court than with him. If the NBA didn't hate the Thunder so much, this travesty wouldn't've happened.

The sad thing is, there will be people who read this and don't realize I'm being sarcastic.

At bare minimum there was a debate wether to take him or Miller at 2

Nonetheless congrats Victor!

I really, really didn't think it would be. I really thought there would still be some journalists hell bent on picking Chet. Man that feels great.

I agree.
They will have failed themselves and Wemby.

I think they get it. I hope they get "it" to get it.
He is pure joy to watch play the game.
He deserves our team to put as much into him as he puts into them.

Through three first picks in Spurs history combined, only one journalist ever thought they weren't the best in their class. Pretty neat.

Should’ve been All-Star with his numbers. Still, crazy he’s just started with those numbers. I can’t wait to see the finished product. GSG!

At this point last year there were still some folks picking Scoot above Wemby because "tall players get injured."

That was probably much earlier than May 2023, if there were any in that camp at that time it was probably a very small minority. As I recall, in early 2023 the discussion around Scoot had shifted from "generational talent" 'to whether he was actually the no. 2 pick or that should go to Brandon Miller, lots were already questioning Scoot's style (midrange jumper oriented, bad finishing, inefficient, overrated athleticism). I had Brandon Miller at 2 by January or Februrary, until the whole murder case broke out, with that stupid pat down routine he pulled at a game.

He also did something Duncan never did. Miss the playoffs lol

It’d be like Duncan entering the league in 1995-1996 when he turn 20 that April. Though I think he’d still make the west playoffs with Sprewell as his sidekick and Mullin/Hardaway playing enough games to get the 8th seed (4 wins short).

Congrats Wemby!

He’s obviously ready to kick some ass. The organization owes it to him to put enough talent around him to be competitive.

Well, and statistically David was the best player on the team Tim’s rookie year. Put Giannis next to Wemby and my guess is that the team would wins a few more games. :lol

As expected, finished securely in 2nd for DPOY...as a rookie on a terrible defensive team.

Still wrong to consider the team record for an individual award.
