I think he could have great value for us if he'll try to model his game after Lu Durt, he has similar build and attributes to do so, focusing on being pesky lockdown defender and hitting corner threes

He's a cone defensively

He has a low BBIQ and poor defensive instincts. he will never be able to become a player like Dort

Yes pop is an idiot

It's not that much money.
Many Spurs fans seem to have no concept of what is a lot in the NBA today.

He has a better chance winning an Oscar from his acting in those Beldon Commercials than being a lock-down defender

Johnson needs to shoot better and play better defense. He's not bad overall, but those are the flaws he has to fix. He has positive attributes: a real bull who can drive into the lane, create instant offense for the second unit, long arms, very high release point on 3 PT shot so can shoot it well over contests. Strong dunker. Does not get many assists but can rebound well. Undersized small forward, not quick enough to guard speedy guards/wings.

If he ups the 3 PT percentage to high 30s at least, I think people will like him a lot better.

player has improved. He's an ok offensive player and a barely half decent defender. Perfectly serviceable as a 7th banana.

I think we should trade up to draft him at #2

pop might be an idiot but not for that, he isn't the gm. Keldon's deal isnt bad. he has value in the league and would probably do better with a change of scenery. but for this team he is not fit as currently constructed unless he reshapes his game which i dont see happening

isn't he the guy that said he thought about killing himself after the 2013 finals and blamed Popovich for his depression? :lol

His defensive rating actually got a lot worse since his first 2-3 years. Maybe he can improve again with overall better team defense. Remember how awful the 2022-23 team DEF was, and most of last season was the same way until Wemby found his footing Jan 2024 or so.

Maybe Keldon can just transform himself into Giannis

My #1 option to trade away. Do not want him on the team next year.

He has scored 17, 22, and 16 PPG in separate NBA seasons. Experience suggests such players don’t just grow on trees.

I think he could be much better with Dillingham. KJ has to work too hard to get his shots and make decisions. Not his game. If Dill can give him easier looks that would greatly simplify the game for Keldon, and he could find his true role. Just spitballing. To me, that's the additional benefit of Dillingham.

Lots of average role-players in this league would put up decent numbers if there were no 1st, 2nd, or 3rd option players on their team.

If Keldon + 8th pick can get us Ingram then he would have fulfilled his role. Just like Poeltl did.

He doesn’t have the lateral speed to stay in front of faster wings. I think Spurs move him if Keldon doesn’t want to come off the bench. I remember Pop quipped something about, “ if future Hofer Manu would come off the bench, then..”. I wonder if Keldon did so against his will. I think Keldon is great at 6th man, who can call his numbers. He’s a streaky scorer who doesn’t need setup plays to score. Keldon overachieved at 29th pick, played PF when asked. I think PATFO will get him to a good team if he ask.

It is definitely about opportunities. Keldon was the Spurs points guy before Wemby was drafted.

Marcus Thornton scored 14.5 as a rookie with NOH then 21.3 (in 27 games) and 18.7 with sacramento. Didn't get as much minutes outside of those 3 years.
Mike James in Toronto 2005 was 20.3 points, 5.8asst, 3.3rb. Was his only season to score more than 13 points and 31 minutes.

I never heard anything about Keldon not wanting off the bench in fact he indicated the exact opposite when the move was made in Dec 23.

https://spurswire.usatoday.com/2023/12/29/san-antonio-spurs-keldon-johnson-opens-up-move-bench/

I understand that he has his limitations but as a 6th man, or 7th if we can hit on some rookies this draft, you can do far worse. He has a good attitude, good contract, and it’s pretty weak when people just keep ragging on him like he’s just a POS on here, “tbh”

Not saying you did that but the hate for KJ is quite overdone. I get why he can be viewed as a frustrating player, but acting like he has zero positives is weird.
