2024 Spurs Draft Mulligan

Clearly, a lot of Spurs fans are not happy with how the draft played out, so here’s a chance to call your shot and right what you think the Spurs got wrong with the picks they had this year.

Conditions:

- Choose BPA or best fit, or whatever floats your boat, but you can choose only players who were actually available to be drafted when the Spurs were on the dock.

- No trades, but if you want to repeat what the Spurs did with their 8th pick that’s an option.

I included a brief rationale after each pick so the choices don’t seem too arbitrary, but don’t feel like you need to justify yours.

4- Stephon Castle – Hoping his shooting improves, but I, too, would have drafted him here.

8 - Devin Carter – brings a lot of the defensive tenacity we expect to see in Castle with less size but much better shooting.

35- Jaylen Wells – potential three and D forward if his defensive game improves.

48- Harrison Ingram – Not expecting much this late in the draft, but Ingram seems to have a good head on his shoulders and if his shooting improves has the potential to also be a solid three and D forward.

I'm still puzzled about Furphy and can only guess he's seen as one dimensional or didn't want to do a two way. Why they can't do a small contract is beyond me.

For 48, either Tristan Newton or Cam Spencer.

Maybe they are having trouble with roster spots and none of these players wanted two ways.

It’s part of why it was so frustrating, but honestly the way we drafted (ignoring the trades) was damn near perfect. Castle/Dillingham was pretty much the best case realistic outcome for the first round. Then Furphy was a guy who was widely considered a clear first-round talent and he ended up falling to 35.

Castle/Dillingham/Furphy/Ingram would’ve been such a great draft.

With Ingram as a two-way. I'd been quite pleased if they had gone with that going into the moratorium. Then they could sign vet SF or take one into their cap space, add some vet competition (especially at PF) for the younger players going into cap. That's an easy RBI single.

I wanted Clingan at 4, Carter at 8, and Furphy at 35.

If we stick to Castle at 4 then Carter or Knecht work at 8.

Strongly second what Chinook said, but to the spirit of the OP, here is my Mulligan:

4 - Castle. No notes.
8 - Buzelis. Can play the 3 or 4. I think he'll have a solid career.
35 - Furphy. I'm tempted by Ajay Mitchell here but I think Furphy was the best value on the board.
48 - Enrique Freeman. Taking a flyer on an older prospect on the two-way who might be able to contribute some spot minutes.

Not taking Furphy at 35 was stupid when he would have just cost a $1.16 million minimum contract.

Don't get why everyone was so hyped to have taken a second PG. No point in drafting one at 8 if he's not going to get minutes unless it's Topic who just sits out the season.

BTW, this would have been the perfect roster for the "Be patient for one more season" aproach, tbh. Way too raw to get many wins, but if you do get wins it is great because it means the future is bright.

I was about to check ESPN to see who Mulligan is and why he was drafted.

8. Unprotected first round pick from Minnesota in 20131 and a pick swap in 20130. Seriously, though, I don't get the meltdowns when that was a damn good haul for a pick in a bad draft. Spurs fans can be so dramatic. You tell me before the draft that the Spurs could get that haul for No. 8 and I would have been extremely mad if the Spurs didn't take it.
35. Cam Christie - The Lakers gave his brother $32 million and Cam is better at the same age. Drafting an unathletic point guard who can't shoot? I still don't get that.
48. Chomche - This is the wild home run swing that makes sense to me in a bad draft, especially because you can stash him in Austin for three years to see if he can figure out how to play basketball. Deshaun Thomas 2.0 wasn't it.

its based on having the take that castle isnt a real point guard

castle/dillingham/furphy, then trade off the last SRP for a couple of SRP swaps. or you get that chomche guy if he's willing to go on a 2 way

you still get the well rounded castle, come away with 2 strong shooters, one of whom can run point (or if castle actually pans out as a point guard, becomes your sixth man, which is fine), the other of whom is a solidly athletic wing who plays defense and more or less provides competition to the champagnie role

The only way that draft made sense is if the Spurs already knew they were gonna get CP3.

A player with as much speed and quickness as Dillingham can be taught defense easier than you can teach a non-shooter to shoot. Defense uses natural ability and simply puts it to use in a different way while shooting requires retraining of eye/hand coordination which is actually changing a brain function.

The comments about looking at current middle school students to find our #8 pick aren't just funny, they are illustrative of a reality that will require some serious retooling by trades to make it sensible. Can they do it? Maybe.

Of course if they already had been talking with Paul it makes more sense.
