Fam, we have a Castle church (castle) thread.
That said, who gives a fuck? A rookie that isn't Vic finally looks talented immediately. Make 3 more threads for him.
He plays savvy as hell. He is going to have quiet 25-point games. Thank fucking god.
Edit: And when was the last time this team had a mofo who goes to the FT line? Good pick, PATFO.

If only Pop would start him, but it ain't happenin'.

Yes. Active in tons of plays and was very smart offensively at the end of the game.

More room to grow but what stood out to me, other than his ability to still consistently get into the paint, is that Pop put him on Jaquez who was giving us trouble. He has the strength to bang with that type of player.
The kid will have a great career. Hopefully it's with the Spurs. He has intangibles both defensively and offensively that a 3-5yr 2-way player would have. He'll only develop from here.

I think real good especially towards the end with Malaki and Blake depending and making it a game. His ability to take it to the rim with contact is way ahead of his age. Already he’s earning his trips to the line. He’s just gonna get even stronger. I can’t wait.

He seems so advanced for where he is at. With him and Wemby, it should get very businesslike and victory-minded around The Rock at La Cantera. Gonna be a good decade, so assuming everything looks as it seems.

He makes good decisions in both the micro and the macro, the best of which was Go To UConn. That’s the reason he’s so advanced, going to a school where he can learn, not just show out. It’s also the reason I will keep an eye on Liam McNeely, only the second McDonalds AA player to select UConn, Castle being the first. He’s a sweet shooting SF who might be available in our (or Atlanta’s) draft range if neither pick jumps into the top 4.

Castle as stated is showing a bread and butter capability to constantly get to the lane and the line. That makes him an asset in the league on both ends immediately. The determinant of whether he becomes and all star is his shooting.

Yeah, I really like his game so far. Seems very advanced for his age. I love that he can get to the rim and draw fouls while also being able to play make. I hope he can do that in the regular season, and I also hope his jump shot starts going in and he's a decent shooter with the potential to get even better.

My knowledge of college ball isn't that deep, but my impression has always been that everyone who comes out of Uconn can undeniably hoop and handle themselves well on the business/corporate/persona/public opinion end. They probably do have great structure for actual personal development, along with learning the game.

Their history since acquiring Dan Hurley as coach is a bit more limited. He has improved their record every year since arriving in 2018 which is pretty crazy, not to mention the b2b Natl Championship run they are currently on. I wouldn't be surprised to see UConn become an even bigger hotbed of top talent in the next few years with Hurley being young and apparently not interested in any NBA jobs. The fact a top prospect like Castle chose UConn likely knowing he would have a more narrow role than most recruits of his stature than when they choose a "showcase" school who specializes in 1 and dones speaks volumes about Stephs character.
With Steph still being a top pick this year hopefully that will help embolden future likely 1 and dones to target winning programs instead of just choosing based on getting a high usage role at a middling school. Castle still had plenty of naysayers going into this draft (Nate Duncan iirc had him like 20th in the class lol) mostly because of a perceived lack of lead guard qualities and obvious shooting concerns and oddly enough some saying he was a sub par athlete.

I don't even see it as shade or an insult to TP, Manu or Kawhi. None of those guys were the #4 pick, and the two HOFers on that list were developmental flyer picks that turned out. No disrespect at all to either of them to expect Castle to be better out of the gates.
Now... will he end up with a career as good as those 3? Man, that would be amazing if he did! We can only hope! We need his 3ball to come around like Leonard's did though.

Do people assign positions according to body size? Definitions get confusing because of how different people approach the question,
To me, it's clear Castle is not a wing. He's a guard. He's very rarely going to be put into the corners and he's not going to post up much, which are classic small forward/wing traits. He's also going to be defending starting at the top of the key against ball-handlers.
Like, if the Spurs got Traore and play Castle-Traore-Vassell, I'd see Vassell as more of the wing in those sets.

He is definitely a guard who can play some 3 if required. This year it just might require that, especially to get him minutes. Long term he is a versatile combo guard I suspect.

As I said the other day, Tre is redundant if both CP3 and Castle are healthy.
I know they won't play every game, but if one sits Wesley can be the third stringer. We need to find out if he's going to be useful, after all.
I'd look to trade Tre for another reliable shooter or even package him and Collins together for a backup big improvement.
If Spurs actually want to compete this season, that is.
It was obvious from the first summer league game that Castle is a point guard.

He's on an expiring deal.
They either need to extend him or trade him before the deadline.
A tanking team will surely offer more money in the summer and even though we have cap space, we shouldn't overpay an undersized non-shooter.
I'm not that high on him in general because of those two things.
Even though he does everything right on defense, he's just a non-factor against anyone with size and he's not a threat from 3pt.
Backup point guards are fairly easy to find if he doesn't want to take a team-friendly deal.

Defensive net rating with Castle on the floor is 4.9 point better while the offense 1.6 better than when he's off the floor. A rookie with a +6.5 Net Rating is crazy.
Devin Vassel's on/off Net Rating was basically zero last season for perspective.

The next step for him is consistency & aggression.
Yeah, I noticed in Dallas game when his shot wasn’t falling he kinda seemed like the ball was a hot potato and stopped shooting. For him he needs to keep shooting and work on a tear floater and mid range as he is not going to out muscle people all the time. But very happy with his progress and looking forward to watch him grow up and reach his potential

I'm appreciating CP3 right now but how long he stays is uncertain. Basically, a lot of uncertainties to want to move on from a solid backup point guard. Blake would have to really step up. I'd love for Blake to improve and earn the backup spot but seems like that will take more time.
A lot of moving parts. Castle is the eventual starter, maybe next year. But if CP3 wants to stay another year then Castle is still the backup, and Tre would be third string. Either way, Blake has an uphill battle.
The FO takes the long road so I'm guessing Tre stays even if CP3 returns next year.

So you're saying trade Tre and give Blake more minutes so that he becomes the eventual backup?

Less than 20 games in and you can already see the kid is nice; I personally can live with all the mistakes but the great thing he doesn’t! He can handle tough love in fact he expects it. Utah you’re up…..

This kid is a problem once he start playing with his back to the basket! Little guards have no chance.
