Now let’s hope Vassell is our third star or land one through a trade/ the draft.

Considering Westbrook being a low IQ chucker eventually caused Durant to leave OKC I sure hope not :lol

I said a few weeks ago that the 3point shot would be the difference between Castle’s ceiling being high end starter or all-star… and now the shot is starting to fall and look like it’s not a lost cause. Hell fucking yes.
We got something cooking with #5.

Castle/Vassell/Sochan/Wemby line up is the future. All we need is to get a star SF in the upcoming draft.

Shooting can always be practiced and improved, to me the most important thing is his mentality.
Fearless drive and finish over Lebron in the clutch is probably the highlight of the season for me. Almost every rookie and a lot of older players would've just kicked it back out.
He'll obviously be a full-time point guard, that was a bigger question than if he'll develop his shot.
As they say, only God makes point guards. And he's a natural. Just needs reps and coaching staff's confidence to play through mistakes.

Star SF would be perfect, but I'd argue that someone like not overpaid MPJ would be good enough.
6'10, 16-18ppg, 40% 3pt on high volume. While not being a negative on defense because we're projected to have three elite defenders.

I actually want them to draft a star SF and trade for that type of player you mentioned (Markkanen obviously being the dream scenario). That could make us a super team down the line.

I feel like some of you are way too low on Devin.
He hasn't played in 6 months, missed pre-season and he's already back close to the level he was last season.
Just 3ppg down in 11 minutes less with his other stats being nearly identical.
https://i.imgur.com/loraVqC.png
Look at the shooting splits and volume, he'll easily average 22-24ppg when he gets to peak conditioning and I think he can get to 40% from 3pt, a lot of his missed shots were really close.
I don't know how people can hate LeBron. Dude genuinely loves the game.
I've reached that Kobe level respect. Maybe even more, because LeBron seems like a nicer guy and apparently never raped anybody. Same goes for Dirk.
He was our nemesis for so many years and definitely a diva, so he was easy to hate.
But at this point, you gotta respect the wars we went through with him, and the talent and accomplishments he has displayed on the court.

My biggest concerns with Vassell is him staying healthy. When he is on the court and in rhythm, dude can obviously ball. We just haven't been able to see enough of that...hopefully that changes.

This was the first major issue he had, I still think Spurs held out healthy players in past two seasons to get better picks.
With everyone healthy, Devin will have so much more space to operate compared to previous seasons.
When everyone gets healthy, I hope CP3 sits a game or two for rest so we can see Castle/Devin/Champ/Jeremy/Wemby lineup.
On paper it looks really good on both ends of the floor.

It kind of says something that LBJ helped him up after he went after AD in the first half. Not that it's a big thing but normally teams let their opponents help up their own guys during games. I think they were both impressed by that play, which got Castle a foul.

To me it seems completely clear that Castle is seeing the floor and game at a different level than most rookies. He may have limitations and I'm not sure what how ceiling is, but he just knows what he's doing on an innate level even before coaching.
LeBowen
11-16-2024, 12:17 PM
He may have limitations
Honest question, what do you see as his limitations other than shooting that's work in progress?
He obviously won't ever have flashy handles or lightning quick moves, but he's getting to the rim with ease as a rookie. I can't see how he isn't one of the best paint penetrators in his prime. Already draws more fouls than anyone else on the roster.
From the first summer league game it was obvious his passing instincts are great, he's a natural passer.
25 assists and just 7 turnovers in 5 games since he got a bigger role. Should've been even more assists considering how many open shots were missed.
Drafted because he was advertised as a potentially elite defender and he already looks great. Gets torched here and there, but who doesn't? Great instincts and reads in passing lanes, doesn't gamble unneccessarily, everything is calculted.
Jumpshot is obviously the deciding factor, but we have players in the league who are seen as very good shooters right now and their starting point was way behind where Castle currently is. Doesn't mean he'll become a great shooter, but it's an encouraging sign.
I might be getting overhyped, but his IQ and decision making is unprecedented for a rookie that wasn't hyped up as the next big thing.

Putting the shooting aside, which I don't think is a long-term concern for me. (I think he'll be a great mid-range shooter and his three will be at least good.)
1. He's somewhat labored getting into the paint. He doesn't have blow-by burst and he's not very vertically athletic when he drives, as in he can't yam it in traffic or go over guys. However, he is crafty and strong and can draw fouls. I just think this limits him as an iso scorer in some ways.
2. He's a great skip passer and passer on the move. I'm not sure how he is as a CP-type defense manipulator. That's a really tall ask, obviously. Just saying that when he plays point, there are some restrictions to what he might do.
I'm not sure that he'll carry a number one offensive load, be able to break down a defense consistently on his own, and I'm not sure he's a 'floor general' type point so much as a slashing initiator. But those are not huge restrictions. He's going to be a great cutter, reader of defenses, connector, threat off of actions, and so on. He won't be a constant Tony Parker stirring the pot lead attack guy, I don't think. And that's totally fine. His skills are everywhere else.

Fair points about the floor general type, but my impression is that PATFO aren't looking for that kind of a playmaker.
Instead they're fully bought into style where everyone shares the ball.
Wemby obviously won't have KD's handles, but even though it looks rough right now, I think he'll easily get to Giannis level playmaking if we talk ball security.
5 to 6 assists average with good turnover ratio should be easy to achieve.
Devin has great PNR chemistry with Wemby and when CP3 is gone, he should also be able to get those 4 to 5 assists.
If Castle is Jrue, we don't really need an offensive engine type point guard.
It's going to be interesting to see what kind of forward they go in this draft.
If Demin is the real deal and we can somehow get him, they should go for it even if it means overpay.
Point forward with a reliable shot added to current core would be perfect. If they develop, that is.

I don't really mean any of those things in a bad way. I was 100000% into Castle during the draft process. I love the pick and think he can be tremendous. I just mean he's a certain type of player. I think he's sort of multiplicative in a way. If we get a Tony Parker stir-the-drink guard or a multi-tool creative wing, those sorts of players, then Castle just multiplies what's there.

Castle is adjusting so well.
One aspect of his game that I like is that he has a small bag of effective go-to moves offensively. He keeps it very simple.
I look forward to his continued development, especially, after he has seen his opponents a time or two.
