The doge.gov website that was spun up to track Elon Musk’s cuts to the federal government is insecure and pulls from a database that can be edited by anyone, according to two separate people who found the vulnerability and shared it with 404 Media. One coder added at least two database entries that are visible on the live site and say “this is a joke of a .gov site (https://doge.gov/workforce?orgId=1&ref=404media.co)” and “THESE ‘EXPERTS’ LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN -roro (https://doge.gov/workforce?orgId=7cd300eb-cf3f-47f5-90f1-9e66a8bc8d07&ref=404media.co).” https://www.404media.co/anyone-can-push-updates-to-the-doge-gov-website-2/

A couple of other things, the databases the "hacker" linked appear to be for organizational information, "org-data-7cd300eb-cf3f-47f5-90f1-9e66a8bc8d07" and "org-data-1." I downloaded both .csv files and they're empty with a file size of 0bytes. either they've been pulled or they never had any information in them. I don't know.
Also, you'll not the caveat at the bottom of the DOGE website specifically states, "All workforce data from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management as of March 2024 → (https://www.fedscope.opm.gov/)" and "Workforce data excludes Military, Postal Service, White House, intelligence agencies, and others → (https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/data-analysis-documentation/federal-employment-reports/#url=SDM)". Both statements are linked to OPM where even you can view the data DOGE used to create the website. Winehouse, you too can create a DOGE-like website, using publicly available information, just like Big Balls.
I hope the hackers committed a federal crime and are thrown in jail for their stupidity.

Did you not understand that whole COBOL explanation? You don't need a birthday you just need a year. SS won't change and your birthday only matters when you originally sign up for it which is done by an office that will check your birthday.

Serious question. Are you a COBOL programmer because, I'm not. The way I read that was dates are recorded by COBOL in serial format with the EPOCH (which I assume means floor, earliest limit, whatever you want to call it) being 1875 or 150 years ago.
Microsoft records date serially and I don't know their EPOCH but, it occurs to me, if the ISO 8601 standard is applied, month, day, year, hour, minute, second, and millisecond can be recorded in a serial format.

No, but I've worked with enough databases to know why they'd use less inputs. Yes they could do that but made the decision that's it's not worth the resources, because it's not worth the resources. The verification for DOB is done on the front end so putting in the back end when it doesn't matter is a needless redundancy. And probably wasn't worth the memory at the time. I'd argue, it still isn't now.

I understand your explanation, I just don't read it the same way. You said, in quotes, 'the year is reported.' I don't find that quote in the post unless it's contained in the broader post (not linked). What I see is that COBOL doesn't use the Date Time type but stores the date according to the ISO8601 standard...which can store date/time in serialized form, down to to the millisecond. I don't see anywhere where it states only the year is recorded.
I may be missing it but, I've read Winehole's post a few times now and don't find where the serialized date is stored by year only.
In any case, no date [or year], returning a 0 or 1875, is as bad as a full birthdate showing a 150 year-old recipient.

They wouldn't see 4 digits as a valid date.

"Earlier this week, inexperienced officials from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gained administrative access to the core payment systems at the US Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS). Like many Americans, I was shocked. Unlike most Americans, I am in a professional position to understand the potential for catastrophic macroeconomic consequences far beyond the privacy and security concerns suggested in the media and by our elected representatives.
One of the officials with admin access to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service was 25-year-old engineer, Marko Elez, who is unlikely to have experience in the arcane, aging COBOL programming language (dating back to 1959) of the bureau’s payment system, and who meets DOGE’s recruitment criteria of having the hunger to make change. Unfortunately, the line between impatience and recklessness is not clear-cut, and any missteps could upend the entirety of public expenditure in the United States.
Elez resigned from DOGE today over allegations of racism, rather than professional competence. His replacement is just as unlikely to have the kind of experience and temperament required to work with the most mission-critical systems in the United States government. DOGE has stated that it wants to recruit risk-takers who want to “fundamentally remake the federal government” at all costs....."

The website states in tiny print at the bottom that its database excludes information from U.S. intelligence agencies.
But an easy search shows that DOGE’s database provides details on the National Reconnaissance Office, the federal agency that designs, builds and maintains U.S. intelligence satellites. Not only are NRO’s budgets and head counts classified, but the prospect of Musk’s tech team meddling in sensitive personnel information is setting off alarms for some in the intelligence community.
“DOGE just posted secret NOFURN info on their website about [intelligence community] headcount, so currently people are scrambling to check if their info has been accessed,” said one Defense Intelligence Agency employee, who requested anonymity to avoid retaliation from senior leaders.
NOFURN stands for “Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals,” meaning information in this category can’t be shared with any foreign governments, international organizations or foreign nationals without specific authorization.
NRO appears to be the only intelligence agency with its data publicly available on DOGE’s website.

Not that I don't trust the stellar journalist integrity of HuffPost but, I don't. As it stands now, HuffPost (or news organs that get their content from HuffPost [shocked face]) are the only places reporting the "reported" breech of NRO data.
This statement is suspect: "But an easy search shows that DOGE’s database provides details on the National Reconnaissance Office, the federal agency that designs, builds and maintains U.S. intelligence satellites."
The DOGE website doesn't have a search function. And, when you navigate through through the site, following both the Department of Defense (who oversees the NRO) node and follow other agency nodes, under the Executive Branch (where the Director of National Intelligence would be found - under which the NRO is organizationally located), it's not there. Neither is DNI. Only the Security Council is mentioned and it's data isn't there.
I would think CBS, NBC, Politico, CNN, and the other Leftist mouthpieces would have been all over this but, I can't find it on their sites, using Google.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not request more than $137,000 in repairs and upgrades to military housing at Fort McNair that will become his official residence, according to a U.S. official familiar with the work order, who says the Army undertook the repairs on its own since the more than 100-year-old home had sat vacant for a year and needed security upgrades.

I was impressed at DOGE's ability to uncover the issue with the millions of people of people over the age of 100 in a Social Security Database.
It must have been really hard to discover this thing that the SSA already knew, isn't resulting in any material amount of incorrect Social Security benefits being paid, and would cost more to fix than it would potentially save. Great work! https://oig.ssa.gov/assets/uploads/a-06-21-51022.pdf
There are approximately 89,000 Americans age 99 or over receiving Social Security benefits, which is fewer than the number of Americans aged 99 or older currently living, per the US Census Bureau. But, let's get our panties in a twist because one database somewhere doesn't list death records. Real elite detective work at play here.

DOGE Claimed It Saved $8 Billion in One Contract. It Was Actually $8 Million.
The Department of Government Efficiency, the federal cost-cutting initiative championed by Elon Musk, published on Monday a list of government contracts it has canceled, together amounting to about $16 billion in savings itemized on a new “wall of receipts” on its website.
Almost half of those line-item savings could be attributed to a single $8 billion contract for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. But it appears that the DOGE list vastly overstated the actual intended value of that contract. A closer scrutiny of a federal database shows that a recent version of the contract was for $8 million, not $8 billion. A larger total savings number published on the site, $55 billion, lacked specific documentation.
The contract, with a company called D&G Support Services, was to provide “program and technical support services” for the Office of Diversity and Civil Rights at ICE. The Trump administration has been purging diversity programs from the federal government.
...
Even the $8 million is an upper bound on the amount saved by canceling the contract. Since $2.5 million had already been spent on the contract, according to data on USAspending.gov, that suggests that canceling it saved $5.5 million at most.
A spokeswoman for DOGE did not respond to a request to explain the department’s accounting.
The $7.992 billion mistake was discovered simply because it was the first item The Upshot reviewed, after sorting the list by the savings amount.

Elon Musk is a special advisor to the President -- many Presidents before this one has had them. It appears the President has tasked him with organizing DOGE to execute his agenda, with respect to government efficiency. I'm as good with that as Obama was with creating USDS to fix Obamacare and a couple of other government efficiency issues.
As for the estimated 250K federal employees losing their jobs? Yes, it's unfortunate but, industries/businesses change. Think of all the lost employment when car manufacturers left Detroit; or, when government regulations closed down who swathes of industries. The federal government isn't a charity; no one has the right to a government job. If the job is, through an efficiency audit, deemed unnecessary, it would be morally reprehensible to force the U. S. Taxpayer to continue paying their wages.

The Supremes ordered Dellinger to respond to the administration's filing by 2:00 P.M. today. He did, trying to argue the circuit courts were already expediting his case and there was no need to get involved. the Chutzpah of someone telling the Supreme Court to butt out of their legal fight. I don't know how they're going to ultimately rule but, that was pretty damn funny.

I don't think the Administration has filed anything further but, I suspect they're trying to get the following into some kind of legal format, suitable for filing in the U. S. Supreme Court.

What it boils down to is the courts are going to come to the conclusion the Executive has exclusive control over the Executive Branch. Period. He can hire and fire, he can reorganize and move programs around, he can stop spending waste when it's found.
Like I said somewhere, the Trump team was prepared on day one with actions, they knew would be challenged but, that they also believed would prevail. Hey, if your blood pressure isn't high enough, check out today's Executive Order, it addresses all of this by reasserting his authority as the Executive - in the Executive Branch of Government:
Ensuring Accountability for All Agencies (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/ensuring-accountability-for-all-agencies/)
The President continues to move forward while the Left and the media flail along behind him.

No, it's not. The Courts and Congress still exist as the other two co-equal branches of government.
If he actually does something illegal or unconstitutional, that's what they're there for.
Hell, even that Obama-appointed Judge, US district judge Tanya Chutkan, had to fold because she realized Trump was within his authority as the Executive.
Just because previous Presidents have allowed unelected bureaucrats set up a shadow government and rule by regulation, encumbering OUR hard-earn tax dollars for things most reasonable Americans would have never approved, doesn't mean ALL Presidents must do that. I think the buck has finally stopped at the right desk. Yeah, it's ugly to watch all the caterwauling over losing the government gravy train but, no one expected there to be no pain.

Repurposing the USDS was a brilliant move.
Starting with the most egregious agencies, USAID, Education, and Treasury -- again, brilliant.
Surely, you don't think Trump sat down and planned this whole strategy by himself? No, he assembled a team (I've heard estimates of over 1,000 people) that researched every action he wanted to take as the incoming President. I'm sure they found the loopholes and exploited them like Trump does his taxes.
One for instance; Like you and other, I assumed Elon Musk was the Administrator of DOGE. Well, they've revealed he is not. The Administrator of DOGE reports to the President's Chief of Staff and, while DOGE must have an Administrator, his identity doesn't have to be disclosed. Yes, President Obama identified his Administrator of the USDS but, he wasn't charged with fundamentally restructuring the Executive Branch, auditing the books, and making recommendations for drastic cuts in spending and staffing. Can you imagine that pour soul's life if people knew his identity? I believe that's why Elon Musk has allowed himself to be the lightening rod for what DOGE is doing. That and because, he's assisted with staffing the service with competent programmers like Big Balls. And, as President Trump's Special Advisor, he can pretty much put his hands on whatever the President allows.
I guarantee you Trump had better lawyers than you or I or Chuck Schumer that sat down and went over every proposed action, with a fine tooth comb, to make sure it was legal and constitutional. All we're seeing is the Left catching up. The cases will be filed and, for the most part, they'll be decided in Trump's favor. Where they're not, they'll be appealed through the courts or, in an emergency, to the Supreme Court where, they'll in all likelihood be decided in Trump's favor.

The Administrative Branch was never envisioned as a branch of government separate from the Executive. There is no 4th branch of government. If you read the U. S. Constitution it clearly says, in Article II, Section 1, Paragraph 1, "The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America."
Singular "a President."

"...A new online tracker on the Department of Government Efficiency's website puts a dollar amount on the estimated savings from the DOGE effort to slash federal government spending at $55 billion.
But an NPR analysis finds the numbers don't add up.
The DOGE site's posts, reminiscent of a feed on the Musk-owned social media site X, say some savings come from sources like "fraud detection/deletion" and "workforce reductions, programmatic changes, and regulatory savings," and state that the full disclosure of the unit's actions will take time....
.....In all, estimated savings from the initial DOGE list of just over 500 contracts that NPR found to be cancelled runs closer to $2 billion, with roughly half coming from the gutting of the Department of Education, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The contracts DOGE has targeted at these agencies include ending research studies into early childhood education improvements, canceling access to financial market resources and the proposed halting of billions in international foreign aid work. To check DOGE's claims, NPR compared the unique award ID from each hyperlink DOGE published with a list of more than 130,000 contracts that have been modified since Jan. 20, downloaded from USASpending.gov, another public data source to review government spending...."

Lol gullible idiots.
You Trump tards will still claim fake news
I'm concerned that many people do not understand the historical and institutional context in which the DOGE labor reforms are unfolding. They look at this as if these are some random, chaotic, arbitrary, strange, and even cruel measures to impose on a devoted civil service.
The reality is very different, and I'm not even sure that Elon entirely understands this. For more than a century, even dating back to 1883, the civil service has grown and grown without check from the elected branch, either the presidency or the legislature . The bureaucracies have ballooned from a few to 450 or so. The bloat and absurdities have grown too.
Get this: no one has ever known what to do about it. Not Coolidge, not Hoover, not Nixon, not Reagan, not Clinton, no one. No president has been able to crack this nut. The only reforms ever to have made it through are those that make the administrative state bigger, never smaller.
Countless cabinet secretaries have come and gone, always with the intention of making a change but leaving saddened, demoralized, outwitted, outgunned, and ultimately devoured.
No president has seriously taken on this problem because they simply did not know how. The unions are powerful, the intimidation from the deep institutional knowledge is overwhelming, the fear of the media as been powerful, and every single president comes to power vaguely feeling threatened by the intelligence agencies. The industries that have captured every single agency were also far too powerful to unseat or control.
This combination of institutional inertia has blocked serious reform for a full century. No one has dared. No one has even had a theory or strategy about what to do about this problem. It had become so terrible that most people in politics have simply surrendered, like homeowners who know there are rats in the basement and bats in the attic but long ago gave up trying to fix the issue.
All this time, the American people have felt themselves ever more oppressed, weighed upon, taxed and regulated, spied upon, brow beaten, and otherwise overwhelmed. Voting never made any difference because the politicians no longer controlled the system. The bureaucracies ruled all.
The Biden years underscored the point. We didn't even need a conscious and present executive. We only needed a figurehead to pretend to be president, just like the Soviet premiers in the old days. The institutions ran everything and the people controlled nothing.
How to deal with this? Trump alone figured it out in his last term: he simply took charge of the agencies in a limited way. There were screams of horror and plots galore. They performed a long stream of clever schemes to destroy him and show him who is boss, which is not the democratically elected president but the forces behind the scenes.
The job of the president, goes the message from all the insiders, is to PRETEND to be in charge but not actually do anything meaningful. Shut up, mug up, obey, and disturb nothing, let the administrative state do its thing without oversight or disruption, and then you will get your honorary library and bestselling autobiography and go down in history as great.
Trump refused the deal and look what happened.
Four years have gone by and Trump is back again, this time with a determination to slay this beast, one that he knows all-to-well. The efforts of DOGE and MAHA and MAGA are epic in scope, breaking a century of pathetic acquiescence toward the deep, middle, and shallow states, at last using moral courage to confront the problem head on, come what may.
They are profoundly aware that they MUST act fast and with some degree of ferocity, even recklessness, else we will default back to the status quo of leaders who pretend to be in charge while the embedded system runs things behind the scenes.
It has been this way for TOO LONG. The voters this time have demanded change, and mustered the faith to believe that change is possible. This is precisely what DOGE is attempting, to make good on a promise, a promise that for once the voters actually believed was credible.
They simply must succeed. There might never be another chance. The way of failure is the path everyone knows the US was on, toward economic stagnation, political scolerosis, and eventual irrelevance in the unfolding of the next stage of social evolution.

DOGE is shite at accounting
Shitposting isn't an audit
Literally no waste and fraud have been identified -- try going to court with evidence and swearing it under oath
One of the entries on the DOGE website, first reported by The Intercept (https://theintercept.com/2025/02/20/doge-social-security-cuts-musk-receipts/), claimed to save $232 million by canceling a technology contract with the Social Security Administration. The only aspect of the contract that was canceled, however, was "a project to develop an 'X' gender marker for the agency’s internal databases." That cancellation, part of a larger anti-trans agenda, will produce $560,000 in savings. The rest of the contract is unchanged.
Politico analyzed (https://www.politico.com/news/2025/02/22/doge-data-errors-inconsistencies-00002576) the data and identified "at least 14 instances where items are repeated, totaling $325 million in claimed savings." Among the duplicates was "a single $25 million item under the Agriculture Department" that was repeated four times. DOGE counted each vendor authorized to bid on the contract as a separate item. Actually, there are "only two finalized contracts from the vendors listed," and they have "been awarded less than $1 million."
In other cases, DOGE claimed credit for canceling contracts that had already expired (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/upshot/doge-musk-trump-errors.html). Michigan-based environmental scientist David Reid decided to let "his contract studying invasive species in the St. Lawrence Seaway" expire on December 31, 2024, because he is planning to retire. He was surprised to find the contract included in the list of "savings" claimed by DOGE.
Overall, the Washington Post found (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/02/22/doge-savings-found-list-analysis/) "417 of the deals on DOGE’s list indicate that they saved $0" because they were already completed. Another 51 canceled contracts collectively saved less than $1 million.
The DOGE website links its claimed savings to information about the contracts on the Federal Procurement Data System (https://www.fpds.gov/). In several cases, however, the claimed savings and the linked contract do not match, raising questions about what contract — if any — was actually canceled. For example, "DOGE reported a canceled contract with National Jewish Health to support research on lung diseases," but linked to "a contract with the University of Oklahoma for cardiovascular research." National Jewish Health told Politico (https://www.politico.com/news/2025/02/22/doge-data-errors-inconsistencies-00002576) that it had not been informed that its grant had been canceled or cut.
Along with contracts, the DOGE website boasts of $144 million in savings from "canceling or renegotiating 97 leases for office space and other real estate used by federal agencies." But, according to an analysis (https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/02/22/doge-savings-found-list-analysis/) from the Washington Post, "[s]ixteen of DOGE’s 20 largest savings on real estate were calculated by assuming that those leases would otherwise have continued for another five years." In fact, "all 20 were already due to expire within the next two years — and most this year." The inflated savings accounts for $104 million of the $144 million of total claimed savings.

DOGE quietly deletes (http://ttps://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/25/upshot/doge-spending-cuts-changed.html) the five largest spending cuts it had been celebrating last week.
DOGE was a lie to intimidate federal workers into doing whatever Trump wants.
Conservatives love kings and dictatorships. Neo-monarchists, not even conservatives anymore. Y'all bent the knee without even a whisper. Pathetic.

DOGE is terrible at counting and doesn't support its findings
"For the second time in two weeks"
For the second time in two weeks, DOGE's "receipts" don't match its claims.
On Monday, the Department of Government Efficiency (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-is-doge-elon-musk-findings-trump/) released another round of so-called "receipts" — or canceled contracts to show its cost cutting — and posted them on its "wall of receipts." As was the case with the first round (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/doge-wall-of-receipts-shows-errors-tallying-billions-in-savings/), this set, too, contained inaccuracies.
Despite doubling the number of listed contracts, the updated itemized savings now total $9.6 billion, a sharp drop from the original $16.6 billion in savings DOGE itemized last week. At the same time, DOGE is now claiming total savings of $65 billion — far higher than the amount itemized, and an increase from its earlier claim of $55 billion, much of which has previously been called into question.
$65 billion is approximately 0.9% of the entire 2024 federal budget of $6.75 trillion.
DOGE's website claims this higher figure includes savings from contract and lease terminations, renegotiations, grant cancellations, layoffs and other miscellaneous reductions, but DOGE has not supplied documentation for the vast majority of the savings it claims.
In addition, $144.6 million is attributed to real estate savings, but DOGE has provided no supporting details beyond the dollar figure, agency and city, making independent verification difficult.
DOGE (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/this-is-who-the-white-house-says-is-in-charge-of-doge/) has not explained why it reduced the itemized total, but this is likely due to errors in the original reporting — many of which were first identified by news organizations including CBS News (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/doge-wall-of-receipts-shows-errors-tallying-billions-in-savings/).
Initially, DOGE listed 1,127 receipts. That number has now grown to 2,299, though 34% of them report zero savings. The newly added receipts also contain apparent errors and instances of double, triple and even quadruple counting.

Other listings also raise questions, including:
Three separate items list savings of $15 million each, but each item references the same contract, a blanket purchase agreement, under different contractors. A blanket purchase agreement is a standard government agreement that is often used for simple repetitive purchases. In this case, the Environmental Protection Agency contract was for "human resources consulting services." The Trump administration terminated the agreement on Jan. 25, referring to the contract as "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Enterprise Services Blanket Purchase Agreements (BPAs)." It is unclear how much of the contract's funding had already been spent.
Two line items list $9,999,999 in savings for a Consumer Finance Protection Bureau contract cancellation, although both of those are for the same contract.
In its first receipt release, DOGE listed another contract three times, claiming total savings of $1.965 billion. In reality, government records indicate that only $400 million had been spent over four years across 44 subcontracts, with minimal remaining expenditures expected. The latest DOGE update now lists one of these contracts as saving $0.35, another at zero savings, and a third at $18,171,886.
An earlier posting incorrectly claimed $8 billion in savings from a canceled contract, due to an apparent typo in the original document. The actual contract was worth $8 million. The contracting company, D&G Solutions, confirmed to CBS News that this was an accounting error and that $3.8 million had already been spent. Despite this, DOGE continues to list $8 million in savings for the contract's cancellation, when the actual figure is $4.2 million.
DOGE has also taken credit on X for the sale of a building in Washington, D.C., claiming it as savings. However, CBS News found (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/doge-claims-credit-for-selling-building-auctioned-under-biden-administration/) that the building was actually auctioned off during the Biden administration for approximately $4 million.

Sen. Joni Ernst’s staff uncovered the secret slush funds when, after months of enduring the agency’s excuses to justify its resistance to oversight, they were finally permitted access to “very limited data.” In October 2024, as Ernst has since detailed, the senator’s staff visited USAID headquarters in person for an “in-camera review” of Ukraine assistance data even though, her team discovered, the documents were not classified.
Even though they were heavily restricted during their investigation, Ernst’s team discovered a variety of U.S. taxpayer-funded grants funneled to Ukrainian businesses under the guise of both Competitive Economy Program (CEP) and Investment for Business Resilience funds.
Among the grants Ernst’s staff discovered were hundreds of thousands of dollars devoted to literal pet projects including approximately $300,000 to a “pet tracking app,” approximately $300,000 to a “dog collar manufacturer,” and approximately another $109,000 to a “pet food packaging producer,” according to a findings breakdown Ernst’s office sent to The Federalist.
Fashionistas also benefitted from the taxpayer-funded expenditures with a women’s clothing company, a fashion photographer, a “purveyor of contemporary knitwear,” a “luxury bridal brand,” a “marketplace for designer artisanal pieces,” and even a “trade mission for a fashion design house,” raking in approximately $733,000 combined.
Designers including a “custom carpet manufacturer,” which received approximately $2,000,000, and two different furniture lines, which received $114,000 and $91,000 respectively, also joined in the funding frenzy.
Even foodies received their fill of American cash. A “trade mission for a condiment manufacturer” cost taxpayers approximately $94,000, a “pickle maker” received around $148,0000, an organic coffee and tea producer was handed approximately $255,000, a vineyard pulled $89,000, and an “artisanal fruit tea company” collected $104,000.
USAID also awarded a “specialty biscuit and confectionery company” around $678,000 — nearly the same number of taxpayer dollars as the aforementioned food grants combined — and a meatpacking plant approximately $319,000.
USAID “failed to provide any of these documents” to Ernst’s staff beyond the “in-camera review.” USAID also often claims national security exemptions to avoid disclosing controversial charges on its public “foreign assistance” tracker.

White House leaks
Just moments before the blowup with Mr. Rubio, Mr. Musk and the transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, went back and forth about the state of the Federal Aviation Administration’s equipment for tracking airplanes and what kind of fix is needed. Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, jumped in to support Mr. Musk.
Mr. Duffy said the young staff of DOGE was trying to lay off air traffic controllers. What am I supposed to do? Mr. Duffy said. I have multiple plane crashes to deal with now, and your people want me to fire air traffic controllers?
Marco Rubio was incensed. Here he was in the Cabinet Room of the White House, the secretary of state, seated beside the president and listening to a litany of attacks from the richest man in the world.
Seated diagonally opposite, across the elliptical mahogany table, Elon Musk was letting Mr. Rubio have it, accusing him of failing to slash his staff.
You have fired “nobody,” Mr. Musk told Mr. Rubio, then scornfully added that perhaps the only person he had fired was a staff member from his Department of Government Efficiency.

DOGE Is Putting Major Government Efficiency Projects at Risk
In its apparent quest to cut government spending and improve efficiency, DOGE has fired entire tech teams devoted to those very things.
Since Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency took over important government technology teams within the General Services Administration (GSA) and what was formally known as the United States Digital Service (USDS), around 200 technologists have either resigned or been fired, jeopardizing about a decade’s worth of work dedicated to everything from public health to passport applications.

Why layoffs don’t work
...
Some of these issues stem from the fact that a company that does layoffs is typically in distressed shape already. But experts have found several other reasons for why layoffs lead to negative results:
Mass layoffs are often symptoms of unsound business strategies and don’t do anything to cure the larger problem.
Absent significant strategy changes, productivity declines with fewer employees.
Companies routinely replace laid off employees (who often receive severance) with expensive consultants or hire contractors for similar wages, reducing the cost savings.
Companies must invest to train current workers to pick up new tasks — and invest to recruit replacement employees after the economy improves or the company’s financial troubles clear up.
As they recruit, these companies often find their reputation has been damaged among potential applicants, says Wayne Cascio, a professor emeritus at the University of Colorado Denver who’s researched layoffs for decades. “If they have two offers and one is with a company that just had layoffs last year and another one is with a company that hasn’t had layoffs, which one are you going to pick?”
Plus, the employees who survive layoffs grow discontent with the company and burn out faster as they handle more tasks, Cascio adds, leading to expensive voluntary worker exits.

DOGE isn't reform or rational downsizing, it's vandalism
the point is to wreck the capacity of the USG and amplify graft, to turn it into a giant patronage machine run by the president, who financially controls everything and reduces the US Congress to an advisory capacity

I recall you called him/Musk everything but a White man when you heartily believed he wouldn't dispense the Starlink system vs. Russia. Oh, it was just a calamity. Then when he did dispense it, we could hear a pin drop every single day that ends in (y) since.

He would not have gone on to help lead a public-private partnership that raised $75 million to redevelop visitor facilities at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, or a $300 million negotiation to improve amenities at Yellowstone National Park with private funds, or the acquisition of the United Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania for a national memorial...."
