The Spurs seem to be gunning for a play in spot for better or worse.
6-13 in the West is very much in play with the Mavs and Suns in absolute shambles atm.

The optimist in me is just rooting for continued development in the Fox/Castle BC and
upping (rehabbing?) the value of potential trade chips in KJ and Vassell.

The Bball astrologist in me says it’s bad ju ju to tank when you were gifted the chance of selecting Wemby by winning the last game in that very same season.
All for rooting against ATL but can’t in good faith do it against me Spurs.

Then the games start to matter - they wilt. Once they’re out of contention for the playoffs or play-in they start winning. We debate how important it is to win these games to “get the feel of winning” and “develop a winning culture”’.

Spurs end up with a middling pick and draft guys like Josh Primo…or Devin Vassell. Meh.

Scott and I have mentioned this for weeks. We've been part of the try to win games crowd, but after Victor was ruled out for the season, what can you do? Tough spot to be in. I'd still rather they play their asses off and try and learn to win, but getting a higher draft pick would also be beneficial.

Yep, crappy spot to be in. At this point, I just want them to play hard and if they lose most of those games, then I'll be OK with that. They just need to learn to play for something, though, so outright tanking is going to be detrimental and has been detrimental in the past leading up to this point.

Devin and Keldon are prime examples of this. I'm glad that KJ has been playing well, and that Devin had a great game today, but I need to see A LOT more of this when the games count/matter for me to think they've turned any kind of corner.

I wanted them to keep playing hard and trying to win, but deep down, after Victor was out for the season, I'm torn. It's better for the team to increase lottery odds, but they also need to learn to win. It's really tough spot. Outright tanking is IMO why Devin and Keldon play better when there is no pressure. They're just not used to playing in games that matter/mean something. Victor came in used to winning and he hates to lose. It's also why I liked Steph from the get-go. He plays to win, and I don't want to see anything else other than that from him and for the other guys to learn to do that too.

I enjoyed seeing Devin have this kind of game, though, as I was waiting for it all season. This is what I thought he's capable of. I really don't know if it's been the foot injury and he's only just getting better physically, or if it's been mental, and he's just not used to playing under pressure trying to win games to make the playoffs.
When the Spurs last made the play-in, he was one of the guys that showed up for that game in New Orleans, so up until this season, I thought he was someone that can play under pressure as he played well that game, and most of the other Spurs players didn't show up. It's only a one game sample size, though, and unfortunately, that's all I've been going off of in regard to Devin in playoff type games.

I was feeling bad for Victor after those stretch of games he had in December with no real backup. Could have really helped just having someone even at Biyombo's level (I just watched the postgame interview with him as I'd never really heard him speak before that). Sucks that the Spurs didn't get him or someone similar earlier. Maybe the thought Zach was going to play better than he did? I am guessing CP3 gave the recommendation on Bismack. Would have taken a bit off pressure off of Victor to have someone like that earlier, could have maybe won more of those games and put less of a physical toll on Victor.

And yeah, was driving me crazy seeing Steph benched for no reason. I was close to letting it go as I just didn't want to work myself up over it anymore, and then all of the sudden, out of nowhere, he started getting minutes again And of course, he showed he never should have been benched or had his minutes cut in the first place. He did have a few bad games, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't have gotten the benefit of the doubt over guys that hadn't performed all season. He's performed most of the season and deserved to be able to play through it. Steph is the real deal (props to all the guys that said the Spurs should pick him in the draft). If he can just keep improving on that jump shot and get consistent with it, there is no limit.

Was thinking about this yesterday... had the Spurs acquired Jonas or Vooch and had Bismack backing him up... I think we'd still be able to make a push for the play-in as the bottom of the west is in complete shambles right now. For the lotto odds, maybe it's best we didn't make that move.

It’s so late in the game to try to tank. I actually don’t see anyone moving up or down more than one spot, and that hardly worthshitting the bed. I can see the Spurs shutting down Fox if it gets to the point where he won’t make training camp because of the surgery needed on his hand.
