Spurs -6.5
This has been a rough stretch for the Mavs and their fans:
First, they trade away Luka Doncic for a seemingly lesser return.
Now the final insult, they're a 6.5 point underdog to the bleeping Spurs. :lol

That's an understatement. Nico Harrison has completely tanked his franchise's future overnight. Trading away a top-3 player in the world at 25 years old - and just 8 months removed from a trip to the NBA Finals - for a broken-down 32 year-old big man nicknamed "Street clothes" is insanity. Inexplicable even. Not getting back ANY other players or at least a treasure-trove of draft picks is equally insane.
The Mavs then rushed that big man back from an injury to try minimize the anger and push-back they were (rightfully) receiving from their fanbase. That caused said player to last only 3 Qtrs with the Mavericks before going down with a serious and likely seasons-ending injury.
Then, to try and compensate for his loss, the Mavs began playing their 33 year-old star PG the most minutes in the entire NBA on average since that big man's injury, causing said PG to suffer a torn ACL, which will force him to miss at least a year of his career. That star PG will be coming back from that torn ACL at 34 years old and will likely never be the same player again.
To say it's been a "rough stretch" for Mavs fans is being extremely generous. It's been the worst, most self-inflicted downfall of an NBA franchise in modern NBA history, at least that I can remember.

Would be a good time for Fox to come down with food poisoning. This series has the potential to be all-timer Tank Levels if Mitch would cooperate.
Use these two games to showcase Evan and Kellen
Fox needs to rest that hand tonight. We need to give our bench players more minutes and rest the starters. It will piss off every fan that bought tickets, but we only have a 3 game lead in the loss column. Let's not help Nico by giving him a better percentage shot to save his job by getting the number on pick Cooper Flagg. I think that's about the only scenario that would save him.

You'd have to take a serious look at coaching (developmental, shooting, man-management) at this point. I acknowledge the deficiencies of the roster, but this is team is most definitely performing below its talent grade (at least since the Fox addition)..

The spurs are poorly constructed as a team, too small especially now without Wemby and not enough shooting and sub par athleticism overall.

Spurs are performing just as they should. Like someone above mentioned. They are undersized and unathletic. They can’t shoot. And the BBIQ on some of these guys is borderline deficient.
It’s a bad mix of players and the front office keeps tweaking the roster hoping certain guys play better. They should have clued in when this “core” won 22 games last season.
Well, at least they’re all friends. So there’s that.

This is so deflating, the only hope is that PATFO sees we're not getting anywhere with the likes of Devin and Keldon.
It was obvious last year, hopefully this season was the last nail in their coffins.
You can be happy about better lottery odds, but this will be 6th straight season in the lottery and we're still at 3 core pieces for the future, a couple of maybe decent ones with one solid veteran for the next season.
And most importantly, arguably the worst coaching staff in the league.

Yeah just like the Sixers at a certain point you aren't "tanking" or doing your "process". It just becomes a culture of losing, and losing players, who do nothing but lose. "Vets" like KJ and Dev are just loser players who aren't making your young guys better.
Ice009
03-11-2025, 10:32 AM
Maybe the Spurs don't know about this stuff (creating a losing culture and those players not ever really knowing how to win as a result of it) as they're never really had losing seasons before this stretch. Maybe they don't know anything about it and keep thinking some of these players will come good. I don't think they will, though.
Look at Dallas, some of the guys on their roster in yesterday's game are used to winning so they were able to breakthrough with a win last night against the Spurs probably because some of their players know how to win. Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes are the only two that know about that (even De-Aaron has been on losing teams). CP3 is too old to do anything about it, and Harrison tried his best, but is just not a good enough defender to be played out of position.
Since you mentioned Philadelphia, I wonder how many of the players that were on those "process" teams were still on the team when they started winning? I'm guessing apart from Joel Embiid (although he missed games sitting out with injury), not many of them were still on the team when they started winning.

Sixers issue was that they did t see the direction the league was going, and drafted old school. They drafted Nerlens Noel, Embiid, and Jahlil Okafor, three centers, with their first 3 Process picks. Their next two, Simmons and Fulton, appeared better on the surface, but they could have had Jaylen Brown and got deked out of Jason Tatum. The idea wasn’t terrible, although Philly fans would probably disagree, but the execution was awful.

There was like a stretch where Devin fell cause he was hurt and he just laid on the court with everyone else continuing to play. At some point Keldon tried to help him, then got open for a 3, shot it, and tried to help him again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtLlu7LTnCE&ab_channel=NBA starts at the 5:30 mark. They edited the next play out where Paul got a steal and Keldon hit a 3, but Devin really just laid on the floor like that for a few possessions in a row.

The Spurs are kind of reminding me of Williams Racing from F1. A franchise with a fabled history who couldn't keep up with bigger team's spending and the pace of change in the sport. Williams is only now finding a positive trajectory, but it required a complete overhaul from top to bottom (including new ownership).
Hopefully we make some significant changes this offseason before the rot spreads any further.

if i was convinced that mitch was intentionally losing games to tank for draft positioning i wouldnt feel as bad
but i dont think thats the case at all. Paul would be vocal about it they were pulling shit like that.
instead i just see a very poorly coached team as we have for most of the year, often times covered by Victor just doing ridiculous things. now that the coaches dont have the Victor button, the dysfunction is just a lot easier to see.
this mavs team had far less talent available than we did, and they outplayed us. falls on the coaching. theres no system in place. back in the day with the big 3 and all, they'd miss time, either 1, 2, or all 3 of them at a time, and the rest of the pieces would still go ahead and run the machine. we've seen it with memphis this year with all sorts of players missing time and the team continuing to chug along
its not a great roster or anything. castle has been good but is still a rookie. paul is old and slow. fox is pretty clearly ailing and also playing out of position. victor is out for the year and that after we traded one of our backup centers and the other backup got hurt. biyombo has played admirably but is still biyombo. but that has nothing to do with the way they're playing defense and the offensive miscues
mitch is probably overwhelmed, but its not like pop had been any better in recent years. not even sure what the solution is. i was kinda hoping Bud got fired, but his handling of phoenix isnt inspiring any confidence either.

The bar is so low that literally any coaching hire besides Mitch or the old man would be considered a W in the offseason tbh. Maybe not a long-term W but it's really hard to imagine the team could do much worse than either of those options.

Maybe the next head coach doesn’t have to be someone from the Spurs system. Recent Spurs history ain’t great and it’s probably time for the FO and ownership group to admit that. Going through the Bud, Mike Brown, Steve Kerr etc carousel doesn’t sound like the right move when it comes to implementing a modern system/offensive scheme. Finding a younger voice specifically sounds appealing, Mark Daigenault or Jordi Fernandez types. Danny Hurley is a little older but also intriguing. I just hope it’s not a complete retread.
Mitch was tossed into a rough situation but I can’t help but feel if he were the right guy for the job he would’ve capitalized and taken it and not left it up for debate. Instead we’ve had people legitimately hoping Pop would just come back already.

The issue is that it seems we need a full coaching staff rebuild, which isn't a good environment for a young coach.
Not to mention that making the playoffs (not the play-in, playoffs) is a must next season. The time to hire someone inexperienced was after we drafted Wemby. Daigenault took over when OKC was bad, same goes for Jenkins.
And it's not even a Mazzulla type situation where a young coach takes over a contender because they had the entire staff in place.
As I wrote when we talked about Bud, he has some obvious flaws, but he has won a ring, his basketball principles are what we need and he's the safest bet when it comes to raising the floor.
Then a couple of years down the line if we can't make the WCF or whatever, we look for someone else. But the odds of hiring a brand new head coach who's also going to revamp the entire coaching staff are really low.

Yeah, we're horrible, but we also have the expectation of making the playoffs next season.
No more year zeros and whatnot.
Wemby will probably be a top5 player in the league and we traded for an all-star point guard.
It's obvious that Wemby really hates losing, we can't afford to waste another season of his. As we've just seen, nothing is a guarantee and we have to take advantage of his every healthy season.

This offseason will tell us a lot about whether or not the expectation is really to make the playoffs next season. If we simply run it back, like some fans seem to want, then this franchise isn't serious about winning even if they claim they are.

this mavs team had far less talent available than we did, and they outplayed us. falls on the coaching. theres no system in place. back in the day with the big 3 and all, they'd miss time, either 1, 2, or all 3 of them at a time, and the rest of the pieces would still go ahead and run the machine. we've seen it with memphis this year with all sorts of players missing time and the team continuing to chug along
its not a great roster or anything. castle has been good but is still a rookie. paul is old and slow. fox is pretty clearly ailing and also playing out of position. victor is out for the year and that after we traded one of our backup centers and the other backup got hurt. biyombo has played admirably but is still biyombo. but that has nothing to do with the way they're playing defense and the offensive miscues
mitch is probably overwhelmed, but its not like pop had been any better in recent years. not even sure what the solution is. i was kinda hoping Bud got fired, but his handling of phoenix isnt inspiring any confidence either.
This was the worst thing to happen for the simulator crew. Just total exposal :lol..
The bar is so low that literally any coaching hire besides Mitch or the old man would be considered a W in the offseason tbh. Maybe not a long-term W but it's really hard to imagine the team could do much worse than either of those options.
I would genuinely take Mike Brown in the offseason if it's come down to it (familiarity with Fox, historically a good defensive schemer)...Folks really need to understand this is about raising the team's floor, making the playoffs and letting Wemby taste post-season basketball (how his game and body react to it) before we even talk about contention...

But the odds of hiring a brand new head coach who's also going to revamp the entire coaching staff are really low.
i think Vogel is solid as well
will he be the guy to lead us into some dynasty... probably not. but he at least would be a floor raiser who can competently coach and has had good defensive teams throughout his career whether it was with the pacers or the lakers. he started early as well. he has been a head coach for over a decade yet is still just 51. has a lot of playoff experience as a coach as well
heck he fared better than bud during their respective first seasons with this shit iteration of the suns. got them to 49 wins

I want to see as many losses as possible. Want a top 4 pick
Problem is I don't want to see the same shitty coaching and scrub ass bitches like Vassell and Keldon getting minutes next season when this team should be trying to win games.

God no to Brown, the Kings have become a night and day better team since replacing him with Christie.

Keldumb made a layup with like 40 second left to cut the deficit to 2 and screamed like he just won the finals, it was fuckin hilarious.
:cry he’s so passionate and a great teammate:cry

While we're behind in percentage points Im not convinced till our losses are actually less as the final record is what matters. Next target -Philly

We won’t catch Philly, but we can probably hold on to the 8 spot.

Preach it!
A lot of folks just seem think we can be a lottery team for years and years and then just suddenly flip a switch and be contenders. Or that Wemby must suffer his entire rookie contract on shit teams before he’s allowed to think about competing.
Loser mentality seeps through the franchise and the fans alike
