Turkey detains Istanbul’s mayor, a key rival of President Erdogan

Turkish authorities detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu – a key rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – on Wednesday as part of corruption and terrorism investigations.

Detention orders were also issued for around 100 others connected to the mayor, including his press adviser Murat Ongun, according to state-run news agency Anadolu Agency. Among those detained are elected Istanbul district mayors Resul Emrah Sahan and Murat Calik.

The move came just days before the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) was scheduled to hold a primary election where Imamoglu was expected to be chosen as its presidential candidate.

CHP leader Ozgur Ozel called the detention “a coup attempt against our next president.”

Turkish authorities have detained a prominent investigative journalist and four of his colleagues and replaced an elected pro- Kurdish mayor with a state appointee on Wednesday, escalating a recent government crackdown on the opposition and dissenting voices.

Critics say the crackdown follows significant losses by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party i n local elections in March as well as growing calls for early national elections. Government officials insist that the courts operate independently and reject claims that legal actions against opposition figures are politically motivated.

Investigative journalist Baris Pehlivan was taken under custody late on Tuesday along with Halk TV television channel’s chief editor Serhan Asker and presenter Seda Selek., the station said. The detentions came hours after Halk TV broadcast a recording of a phone conversation that Pehlivan held with an expert employed by courts to provide opinions. Critics accuse the court assessor of providing biased reports against mayors belonging to the country’s main opposition party.

The Turkish lira fell to a record low against the dollar and the country’s benchmark stock index dropped by as much as 7% following the surprise arrest of Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu — a rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and leading opposition party figure — on charges he denies.

The lira was trading as low as 40.96 to the U.S. dollar, according to Refinitiv data, before moving to 38.74 by 12:47 p.m. in Istanbul, with the greenback up 5.53% on the long-embattled Turkish currency. The BIST 100 stock index had pared losses after being down as much as 7% earlier in the morning.

Imamoglu, who won the mayorship of Turkey’s most populous city in April of 2023, was arrested on charges including terrorism and organized crime, according to state media outlet Anadolu, which cited the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The news agency reported that prosecutors also issued warrants for 100 other people in Imamoglu’s political party.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered for a mass rally in Istanbul on Saturday, March 29, at the call of Turkey's main opposition CHP over the jailing of city mayor and top party figure Ekrem Imamoglu whose arrest has sparked the country's biggest street demonstrations in over a decade.

The mass protests over Imamoglu's March 19 detention have prompted a repressive government response that has been sharply condemned by rights groups and drawn criticism from abroad.

The rally in Maltepe on the Asian side of Istanbul comes on the eve of the Eid al-Fitr celebration marking the end of Ramadan, which starts Sunday.

Widely seen as the only Turkish politician capable of challenging President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the ballot box, Imamoglu was elected as the CHP's candidate for the 2028 presidential race on the day he was jailed.
