View Full Version : Why did we send Andry José Hernández Romero to CECOT?

~50 other completely innocent people who were in the US legally and had no criminal record were sent to CECOT in defiance of a court order.

Trump's dirty deal with Bukele is degrading both countries. This is a dastardly crime for which history will condemn Trump and the USA.

He wept and prayed as the guard shaved his head, calling for his mother and proclaiming his innocence. Just a few months earlier, Andry José Hernández Romero had applied for asylum, citing the conditions he faced as a gay man and political dissident in Venezuela (https://www.salon.com/topic/venezuela), a country that the U.S. government and its allies all deem to be an authoritarian, repressive threat to its own citizens. But now he was just a warm body to be paraded before the cameras — just content to be clicked or scrolled past on someone’s phone.

To his family, Andry was an actor, hair stylist and loving son, his dedication to mom and dad tattooed on his arms. To the Trump administration (https://www.salon.com/topic/trump-administration), he was an object that could be used in an ongoing, callous propaganda campaign, his brutalization serving as an advertisement for the president’s war on immigration. His very devotion to his family was used against him, his tattoos reinterpreted as evidence of loyalty to a gang, Tren de Aragua (https://www.salon.com/topic/tren_de_aragua), that does not use tattoos to signify membership.

The stated objective, per the Department of Homeland Security, is for the 32-year-old asylum-seeker to spend the rest of his life (https://www.axios.com/2025/04/09/kristi-noem-migrants-trump-ice-prison) behind bars in a fortress-prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT (https://www.salon.com/2025/03/21/no-place-for-migrants-advocates-fear-expelled-venezuelans-already-being-tortured-in-el-salvador/), where inmates packed in cages are subject to “beatings, severe deprivation, inadequate nutrition and psychological torture,” according to (https://abcnews.go.com/US/abrego-garcia-subjected-severe-mistreatment-cecot-lawyers/story?id=123432720) the only detainee ever known to have escaped its confines.

“He would tell me … that he’s going to help us and that he would make his dream come true to have his own salon,” Andry’s mother, Alexis Romero, said in a recent interview (https://www.democracynow.org/2025/6/27/andry_jose_hernandez_romero). “And they thwarted all of that. They stepped on him, ran him over, completely shut down his dream. Now what is my boy going to do?”

Melissa Shepard, legal services director at Immigrant Defenders Law Center, told Salon that her organization began representing Andry on a pro bono basis in December 2024. At the time he was being held at the Otay Mesa Detention Center, a privately-run prison along the U.S.-Mexico border. He had applied for asylum the right way — by scheduling an appointment and presenting himself at a port of entry — and yet was languishing behind bars. In March 2025, seemingly out of nowhere, it got so much worse.

You ain't getting those motherfuckers out of power at the ballot box. There is no constitution, there will be no fair elections. Even if there was the faggot democrats are only +2 on the generic ballot which means they'd get wiped out in the house and lose something like 12 seats if there actually was an election thanks to gerrymandering per Harry Enten.

Pro footballer tortured by Maduro, fled to the US on the CBP One app, and was then sent due process free by Trump to Bukele's torture dungeon in Salvador while awaiting a final decision on his asylum petition

Now Trump just used him as a pawn to get Americans out of Venezuela and sent him back there

Reportedly, Trump previously tried to peddle CECOT detainees to Nigeria

Nigeria’s foreign minister has delivered a pointed rebuke to the United States, rejecting what he described as mounting pressure from Washington to accept deported Venezuelan nationals — including some with criminal records — as part of a controversial third-country resettlement plan. Speaking during a nationally televised interview Thursday night, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said it would be “unfair” and “unrealistic” for Nigeria to absorb hundreds of Venezuelan deportees who have no ties to the West African country. He added that Nigeria, with a population exceeding 230 million, is already dealing with its own internal challenges.

One of the people Trump repatriated from Venezuela is a convicted triple-murderer

The United States has welcomed the release and surrender by the Venezuelan Chavista regime of a group of 10 Americans who landed last Friday in Texas, among them a triple murderer, Dahud Hanid Ortiz. The identity of this freed man has been confirmed to EL PAÍS through a source close to the Spanish secret services and another from the Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal, which is dedicated to the defense of political prisoners (https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-01-20/the-revolving-doors-of-venezuelan-prisons.html). This organization, a reference in the field of human rights in Venezuela, warned that among those being released was one who was not a political prisoner. This Tuesday, Foro Penal confirmed to this newspaper that it was referring to Ortiz.

At the time of publication, the U.S. State Department had not responded to a request from this newspaper for confirmation as to whether Ortiz has been transferred to a prison. Images published in the U.S. media show him last Friday, waving to the camera as he and the rest of the group left the Joint Base San Antonio military installation in Texas.

Born in Venezuela, Ortiz obtained U.S. citizenship and served in Iraq. He was sentenced in Venezuela in January 2024 to 30 years in prison for killing three people in Madrid in 2016. After committing the crime, he escaped to his home country, where he was arrested in 2018.

possibly related, the timing is interesting

Chevron (https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/CVX) is regaining the ability to pump oil in Venezuela from the Trump administration, people familiar with the move said, in an abrupt reversal in the White House’s policy toward the socialist dictatorship.

Details of the agreement were still unclear, but it follows recent discussions involving President Trump (https://www.wsj.com/topics/person/donald-trump) and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and comes amid last week’s prisoner swap (https://www.wsj.com/world/americas/10-americans-released-from-venezuela-in-exchange-for-prisoners-in-el-salvador-064c660b?mod=article_inline) that released all 10 remaining Americans who were detained by the Venezuelan government, people familiar with the matter said.

case by case breakdown

We’ve compiled a first-of-its-kind, case-by-case accounting of 238 Venezuelan men who were held in El Salvador. To do so, ProPublica, The Texas Tribune (https://www.texastribune.org/) and a team of Venezuelan journalists from Alianza Rebelde Investiga (https://www.instagram.com/ari_movil?igsh=MWhscXkzbW5uYWphcg%3D%3D) (Rebel Alliance Investigates) and Cazadores de Fake News (https://www.cazadoresdefakenews.info/) (Fake News Hunters) spent the past four months reporting on the men’s lives and their backgrounds. We obtained government data that included whether they had been convicted of crimes in the U.S. or had pending charges. We found most were listed solely as having immigration violations. We also conducted interviews with relatives of more than 100 of the men; reviewed thousands of pages of court records from the U.S. and South America; and analyzed federal immigration court data. https://projects.propublica.org/venezuelan-immigrants-trump-deported-cecot/

When asked whether the U.S. government would continue to send people to CECOT, Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement, “whether it is CECOT, Alligator Alcatraz, Guantanamo Bay or another detention facility, these dangerous criminals will not be allowed to terrorize U.S. citizens.”https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/venezuelans-cecot-el-salvador-returned-abuse-rcna220924
