I wonder, with his size and stride, if he was on a fast break and jumped from behind the 3 point line, how close he could get to the basket before have to put up a shot? I wonder if he could make it to the FT line or closer before having to shoot the ball.
BTW, if he did this and made the basket, it would count as a 3.

If his feet were upon lift off behind the 3pt line it should be one I think. His feet were behind the line and only forward momentum and extension of his arm(s) brought the ball into the basket. That's a Oh Mama Wembanyama Three

I've always wondered, if a player could dunk the ball from behind the 3pt line, would it count as a 3?

With Wemby's stride length and arm length, he might be able to do a floater or finger roll from about 4-6 feet away from the basket. That would be the most insane three-pointer ever.

Yes, it should. We've seen plenty of players who jump forward on their threes. It's where your feet leave the floor on the shot, not where they land.

The thing with the dunk would be if it's a 2 pointer if the player touches the rim before the ball goes all the way in?

I mean Wilt supposedly was able to jump from the free throw line to the rim and finger roll it over the hoop. I forgot what season that was where they allowed it but his free throw percentage went up by quite a bit that year before they outlawed it. Oh man I found it lol and he was dunking his free throws :lol

Yeah this was my thought as well... if touching the rim perhaps makes it a 2 instead of a 3... it might even be something the league hasn't actually thought about (because why would they?)

Google AI and other sites seems to say it would be a three, so take that for what it's worth.
I can't find any rule that would dictate that touching the rim applies, although some have tried to make that argument. Shot distance, by and large, seems to be determined by where your closest foot is to the rim when you elevate.
Maybe we just need Wemby to do it so we can find out.

Can you imagine, Wemby just getting a full head of steam, charging down the court, getting the ball passed to him at midcourt, two steps, and then homie takes off for a dunk from 23 feet :lol
I imagine the first time he did it players might get out of the way, but after that dudes will try to take a charge and someone would get hurt

Especially if he is allowed to take 5 or 6 steps like Lebron

I honestly thought I would get laughed out of this thread immediately after I posted the original post. At least I know I am not alone in thinking about absurd scenarios and Wemby.

Fucking Victor does shit I've never seen anyone do before almost daily. The only thing I know for sure is that he's probably going to do more things that I never imagined.

I hope he doesn't actually try too hard to do this. It sounds like a recipe for a hyperextended knee or something.

Even at his height/length...it's gotta be physically impossible. Jumping from the free-throw line is considered an amazing feat.
I could see him pulling up from three just to throw up a floater/runner...but that's been done before.

I want to see this play drawn up to eliminate Houston or OKC at the buzzer of a game 7 down 2.
Never thought of that possibility until this thread. Wilt and Wemby are the only this would be possible for, but, no 3pt line in Wilt's day.

a dunk where you take off from behind the 3pt line would still count as 3 points. with that said im pretty sure its physically impossible.
