I hope they are all great. Our team needs it as the ingredients need some good cooking to make a great meal.

Was surprised by Rashard Lewis, but I guess it’s more likely he lands here than Houston, who passed on him three, or was it four times in the first round, causing him to drop to early second round, after a first round promise. Even back then, they were drafting small white boy shooters, as Bryce Drew was one of the players they drafted in lieu of Rashard.

So Jimmy Baron isn't Spurs shooting coach aymore. Will he be replaced?

Tim Martin is also an interesting add because he is working a lot with Wembanyama and other clients of Wembanyama's agent during the offseason.

Finally some new blood on the sidelines. Hope these guys were picked by Mitch

I wonder if they will give the Austin head coach job to Kenny Trevino. He did a fine job with the SL in 2024.

The Toros at full strength had a really impressive defense. Good promotion.

Is Matt Nielsen still part of the staff?

Similar to Spurs Brazil's question above, I'm wondering about Brett Brown. Are Brett and Matt gone, or have the Spurs decided to expand the staff considerably?

I’m told Matt Nielsen is staying on #Spurs staff as an assistant under HC Mitch Johnson.

Nielsen wasn’t named in today’s Spurs staff changes, but has served as a team assistant since 2021 under Gregg Popovich.

The Australia native will still be on the Spurs’ bench.

I remember Don Harris said Brown retired.

Seems like an appropriate place to post this:

Rashard Lewis will be a San Antonio Spurs player development coach. He was a two-time NBA All-Star and 2013 champion who averaged 14.9 points in 16 seasons with the Seattle SuperSonics, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards and Miami Heat. He was also a Detroit Pistons assistant coach.

I think Rashard will be helpful for Wemby, being one of the first jumbo wings. He’ll have an understanding of being overskilled for a tall player.

Per a team representative: Mike Noyes and Matt Nielsen WILL return to the #Spurs as assistant coaches. Today’s announcement was purely additions and promotions.

Brett Brown has elected to move from an assistant coaching role to the front office. #PorVida

I actually was a fan of Rashard Lewis back when he played for the Supersonics, so I like the hiring (I just realized, maybe Mitch and Rashard crossed paths back in Seattle in the early 2000s when Mitch still lived there before going to college). Didn't follow him much when he went to Orlando, though. I like most of the new hires. I didn't realize Scott King did such a great job defensively with the Toros. If that is the case, happy to have him promoted. How did the Toros season end up anyway?

And what is Kenny Trevino doing? What job did he have? Assistant coach for the Toros?
sti
What I don't like is Jimmy Baron, though, as going by his track record, he seems like a piss poor shooting coach, so I don't see why he's getting promoted let alone still having a job. Not sure if it is his coaching, or a combination of the players he's been trying to teach to shoot (such as Sochan) just not having a feel for shooting making him look worse.

Glad that Nielson is still staying as he seems like a positive contributor still. What do you guys think of the Spurs keeping Nielson?

Sad that Brown is going, but I think it was time for him to hang it up (I am guessing he was leaning that way before, but he may have come back to help Pop out). He's had a good career IMO. Looking back at it now, I don't think he should have taken that 76ers job as it kind of tarnished his career. I think he was a pretty good coach in most of his other stops.

What is the actual limit for assistant coaches on an NBA team? Or is there no limit? I assume you can only have a certain amount on the front seats of the bench, though, and I guess those will be the ones to watch who gets those spots.

Edit : Just saw Brett Brown is still staying on with the team in a front office role. Great to still have him around the team.

Edit 2 : Is Tim Martin pretty legit as far as player development goes. I'm going to have to look him up and do some reading.

Kinda like how we stayed away from league retreads in filling out Mitch's staff. No disrespect or ageism involved, but when your future core players are all born in the mid 2000s, it makes more sense that your coaches are all under 40 so they can grow together without much generational divide hindering that rapport. I read even an old school type who still elite like Carlisle relies plenty on young analytics Pacers folks and reads a famous Indiiana female blogger covering the team. I am sure Pop/Brett Brown (now upstairs) will be there if needed for an occasional elder stateman advice or practice time speech. But obviously Mitch needs to cement his authority first for this to work out.

Rashard Lewis will be good for our second rounders.
