Coming off their worst game of the season, the Indiana Pacers hope to contain Gilbert Arenas as they try to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season when they host the Washington Wizards.
The Pacers went 3-2 on a recent western road trip, including a loss at Seattle in Sunday's finale, before returning home and falling 84-75 to Dallas on Tuesday night.

Indiana looked tired from the start after its longest road trip of the season and missed 11 of its first 14 shots. The Pacers made just two of 14 3-point attempts, missing their final 11, and finished with season lows in points and field goal percentage (34.3).

"I don't believe in excuses," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "Performance is shared by everybody, including the coaches. Inconsistency has been a nemesis for us."

Jermaine O'Neal had 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Ron Artest added 15 points and five steals as Indiana lost its second straight at Conseco Fieldhouse.

The most important job for Artest -- voted Defensive Player of the Year in 2003-04 -- in this contest likely will be to slow down Arenas, who has scored 71 points in the Wizards' last two games.

Arenas scored 37 points, the third time in five games he's reached 34, to help lead the Wizards to a 119-111 overtime win over Toronto on Tuesday. The shooting guard scored 16 points in the final 12 1/2 minutes and dished out 10 assists to spark Washington.

Antawn Jamison added 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, and Jarvis Hayes bounced back from a scoreless performance in Friday's loss to Milwaukee to post season highs with 21 points and eight rebounds.

"Previously, up to this point, I've hesitated to shoot the ball," Hayes said. "And tonight I just shot the open shot, shot the good shot and let it go, without even thinking about it."

Washington has alternated wins and losses in its last five games following a five-game losing streak that slowed the momentum from the team's 5-1 start to the season.

"In a nutshell, it's knowing everybody's game," Hayes said when asked about the uneven start.
