The San Antonio Spurs are enjoying their longest winning streak of the season. If previous history is any indicator, they shouldn't have much trouble extending it.
The defending NBA champions shoot for their seventh straight victory when they visit the hapless Atlanta Hawks, a team they've beaten 12 of the last 14 times.

San Antonio beat Boston 101-89 on Friday, marking the 17th consecutive time they've beaten the Celtics. The Spurs, who own the best record in the Western Conference, have not lost since falling 106-99 to the Chicago Bulls on Nov. 25.

Tim Duncan, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, wasn't quite satisfied with his team's most recent performance. San Antonio led by as many as 16 in the third quarter, but gave up several double-digit leads.

"We played well for the majority of the time," said Duncan, who was averaging 21.2 points per game coming in, ranking eighth in the conference. "We had a little bit of ups and downs -- a little more than we wanted to."

The Spurs were allowing just 89.7 points per game coming in, ranking fourth in the league. They had a season-high 11 blocked shots Friday -- six by Rasho Nesterovic and the other five by Duncan.

The Spurs also improved to 15-0 when leading after three quarters.

"The blocked shots are the consequence of our defensive system," said Manu Ginobili, who scored 14 points. "We were trying to make some of (the Celtics) penetrate and we always want the bigs to defend them."

The league-worst Hawks lost their seventh straight Wednesday, falling 95-83 to the Utah Jazz. Joe Johnson scored 19 points and Salim Stoudamire added 15 for Atlanta, which committed 21 turnovers.

The Hawks are off to the worst start in team history. They opened 3-15 last season. Their only wins this season came in consecutive games against Boston and Indiana, respectively, from Nov. 23-25.

Atlanta ranked second to last in the Eastern Conference with just 90.4 points per game and third-to-last with 99.6 allowed heading into Friday's games.

The first two b2b losses were against a good mavs team and an Arenas on fire.
Duncan played 37 min, Bruce 35 min against Boston. Other players play less than 27 min and Horry is fresh. We should win this one against one of the worst team in nba.

I think he may have thought that he could turn them around. I don't think he realized that they'd be 2-16. It's one thing to know you're going to go play for a sucky team, I'm sure it's a different thing alltogether when you have to play for said losing team night in and night out. Especially after watching and experiencing the success of your former team without you. :lol

I don't quite understand what Mike Woodson is doing right now. You'd think based on the position they are in, he would give Josh & Josh quality minutes to build on their experience and confidence.

Whether it's a back to back/away game, Spurs have no excuse to lose. Our bench can take on their starting 5.

San Antonio (16-3) at Atlanta (2-16) 7:00 pm EST
ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks certainly are picking a bad time to run into the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs go for their seventh straight victory Saturday, while attempting to continue their recent domination of the league-worst Hawks.

San Antonio ran its season-best winning streak to six with Friday's 101-89 triumph vs. Boston. The Spurs, who never trailed, received 20 points and 11 rebounds from Tim Duncan and 14 points from fellow All-Star Manu Ginobili.

The Spurs, who have won 17 straight games against the Celtics, also are on an impressive run against the Hawks. San Antonio has won 12 of its last 14 games vs. Atlanta, including a pair of victories last season by a combined 31 points.

The Hawks are coming off their seventh straight loss, a 95-83 setback to Utah on Wednesday despite 19 points from Joe Johnson and 15 from rookie Salim Stoudamire.

Zaza Pachulia added 10 points and seven rebounds for Atlanta, which made just 20-of-31 free throws and committed 21 turnovers.

If Wednesday is any indication, the Hawks could be in for a long night against Duncan, as they were outscored, 52-16, in the paint against the Jazz.

That is sad if Atlanta is not sold out tonight. They have a chance to witness one of the greatest basketball teams ever asembled. Vegas would say you have to be about 15 to win a dollar if you want the Spurs. And we do not need to trade anyone on this team more at least 2 years. What is wrong with you? Can you not see how good this team can if if it stays healthy and survives a scary christmas? :rolleyes

The absolutely most frustrating part of this is not that they are struggling. It is not that they are struggling with a 2-win team. But when you are at 45% for FT and getting out-rebounded by a big margin, it means that you didn't show up to play. THAT is the frustrating part.

Um no. The Spurs decided not to much else besides walk into the gym tonight. They are making several mediocre guys look really good tonight.

Timmy has taken 1 shot in the second half, and only has 7 rebs despite playing 32 minutes. We have gotten ZERO production out of the 5 spot, other than putting them on the line all night long.

As much as I would like to give credit to the ATL for this one, I can't. Even if the Spurs can pull it out (meaning their heads out of their asses and winning the game), it was horrible effort, hustle and heart by this team.

If you don't have those same expectations, then you need to find another team to root for. Like ATL.

If I actually watched the game, I would most likely be at your level in terms bitterness on the lack of effort. All I saying is that a lack of effort is going to showed by the spurs once in a while. It happened many times last year. That's why we have pop to get on them about effort. We often start slow in that season like this and then get into it late in the year. It's fair to get on the player for lack of effort, but unfortunately the spurs are not going to win every game.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The NBA's longest losing streak and second-longest winning streak came to unlikely ends Saturday night when the Atlanta Hawks beat San Antonio 94-84 to deny the Spurs their best 20-game start in franchise history.

The Hawks snapped their seven-game losing streak, winning for only the third time this season and the first time since Nov. 25.

The Spurs saw their six-game winning streak end.

The defending NBA champion Spurs (16-4) were denied their first 17-3 start. They also were 16-4 after 20 games last season.

The Spurs have the most wins in the NBA, and the Hawks (3-16) had the league's worst record and have heard increased local speculation about the future of coach Mike Woodson. But the Hawks enjoyed a rare highlight, taking the lead in the fourth quarter and then pulling away late.

Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 22 points, and Zaza Pachulia added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Tony Parker led San Antonio with 20 points, Manu Ginobili added 17 and Bruce Bowen had 13.

The Hawks trailed 71-69 after three quarters but raced to an eight-point lead in the final period, the last time at 86-78 on a fast-break basket by Josh Childress.

After the Spurs pulled to 86-81, a jumper by Childress pushed the lead back to seven at 88-81. Following two free throws by Parker, Al Harrington's drive gave Atlanta a 90-83 lead with 55 seconds left.

Tyronn Lue, who had 16 points in a backup role, made three free throws in the final 40 seconds to stretch the lead.

The Hawks hoped to catch the Spurs, playing the second night of back-to-back games, with tired legs. Two of the Spurs' three losses have come in those second-night situations.

The Spurs appeared set to put the game away early, They led 23-15 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 14 points at 39-25 midway through the second period.

Johnson was 7-of-7 from the field in the second period, and his 14 points helped the Hawks finish the half strong as the Spurs settled for a 48-42 lead at the half.

The Hawks carried the momentum into the third period, finally taking a 57-56 lead on a fast-break basket by Harrington. The Hawks' last lead of the period was 63-62, but Bowen answered with a 3-pointer and the Spurs -- who are 15-0 when leading after three quarters -- led 71-69 at the end of the period.

Sorry to confuse some of you with numbers but in the first half, the lead went from 3 to 9 with Beno in and in the second half it went from 3 to even. The team was overall +3 with him in the game. Not saying he played great or anything, but the game didn't fall apart with him in there. That small ball Nazr line up didn't work so well. You have to run it with Tim or Rasho. And what was Nazr thinking with that pass!!

First, I would like to give props to Manu 20, loveforthegame and every one else is the game blog...Thanks!!! Bummer that we lost and didn't get to post stuff like 'that one handed slam dunk by Rasho was wicked/sic'. Oh well, NEXT!
Secondly,20 games down, 62 to go. :makemyday As I have just stated... NEXT!!!
Third, I think Pop was trying out some different lineups just because we were playing the Hawks(a 3-16 team). Perhaps viewing our weaknesses in a different venue ( meaning playing another team and not during practices/drills with each other) to bring the team to a different level of play, plus give the guys a chance to learn from this loss and improve. Just something to consider.

Which we hope the Spurs dont get, a team that has lost 7 in a row is scary. They are hurting for a win. And Spurs tend to play to the level of the competition sometimes.

Stunning win over Spurs snaps Hawks' seven-game losing streak

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks already had demonstrated that they could play with good teams -- for three quarters.

On Saturday night, they finally finished a game, snapping a seven-game losing streak by beating San Antonio 94-84 to deny the Spurs their best 20-game start in franchise history.

The Hawks entered the game with the NBA's worst record while the defending champion Spurs have the most wins in the league.

But the Spurs say they weren't surprised by the Hawks' strong game.

"Look at all their games," said Tim Duncan, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds. "They've been right in the cusp of winning a lot of games. They always play us well. They did when they came to San Antonio."

The Hawks led the Spurs by 13 points after one quarter on Nov. 15 in San Antonio, but they faded late in a 103-79 loss during Atlanta's streak of nine straight losses to open the season.

This time, the Hawks were stronger at the end, outscoring the Spurs 25-13 in the final period.

"We've had games early in the season when we were leading down the stretch," said Josh Childress, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. "This is a game we finished. We got the shots we wanted."

The Hawks (3-16) won for the first time since Nov. 25.

The Spurs saw their six-game winning streak end.

"It just happens," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "It wasn't our offense. Our defense was bad. We scored. We just couldn't stop anybody."

The Spurs (16-4) were denied their first 17-3 start. They also were 16-4 after 20 games last season.

The Hawks players have heard increasing local speculation about the future of second-year coach Mike Woodson.

"We've had a lot of adversity, a lot of stuff said about our team," Josh Smith said. "We've got to ignore that stuff. Coach is a great coach and we hate to see him go down that path. We're trying to play as hard as we can to prevent that from happening."

Woodson called the win "unbelievable."

"You play the best team in basketball like that, that says a lot for those guys," Woodson said.

"I hope this is a learning lesson for our young guys. ... Our defense was on the money. We moved the ball. We made shots when we had to make them. It was fun to watch."

Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 22 points, and Zaza Pachulia added 19 points and 13 rebounds. Parker led San Antonio with 20 points, Manu Ginobili added 17 and Bruce Bowen had 13.

The Hawks trailed 71-69 after three quarters but raced to an eight-point lead in the final period, the last time at 86-78 on a fast-break basket by Childress.

"They just kept coming at us and we couldn't match their energy," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "There were some poor performances on our end, but a lot of it had to do with the aggressiveness and energy that they brought. It was a really good win for them."

The Spurs appeared set to put the game away early. They led 23-15 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 14 points at 39-25 midway through the second period.

The Hawks' last lead of the period was 63-62, but Bowen answered with a 3-pointer and the Spurs -- who were 15-0 when leading after three quarters -- led 71-69 at the end of the period.
