Nuggets rookie guard Julius Hodge soon should join the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League.

Hodge said he asked Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe in the past week to be assigned to Austin after the team's current trip wraps up Dec. 18. Vandeweghe said it likely will happen.

"I just want to play," said Hodge, who has played in only one game for the Nuggets. "It seems like a good opportunity."

This is the first season teams can send players to the NBADL. Seven currently are assigned.

"To (request the assignment) was courageous," Karl said. "(Hodge has) gotten probably as much as he's got out of the team without playing."

Should be a good fit. The Toros are lacking length at the swing positions and Hodge's relative unselfishness could be a breath of fresh air to the often stagnant offense. It'll be interesting to see if he's gotten any stronger with NBA conditioning.

No existing team members should have to be waived to accomodate him.

This is a smart kid. You can't learn as much on the end of the bench as you can by constantly honing your skills by playing.

And don't think that GMs and coaches won't raise an eyebrow and appreciate Hodge's attitude.

Good luck to him. Still not sure why Denver didn't draft a long-range shooter instead.
