Anthony outshines Wade in Nuggets' win over Heat; Bulls honor Pippen

Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade put on a good show. The Denver Nuggets enjoyed it more.

Anthony scored a season-high 40 points to win a thrilling matchup with Wade, and Denver beat Miami 100-92 on Friday night, sending the Heat to their fourth straight loss.

On a night when the Chicago Bulls honored one of the NBA's great small forwards by retiring Scottie Pippen's number, Anthony showed why he has quickly become one of the best current players at that position.

Anthony was 13-of-30 from the field and 13-of-14 from the free-throw line, finishing one point shy of his career high.

"It was definitely fun to watch. ... Melo was spectacular," teammate Marcus Camby said.

Wade wasn't bad, either. The fifth pick in the 2003 draft -- two spots after Anthony was taken -- also had a season high with 37 points, but Miami's skid was extended when it couldn't hold a four-point lead with 2:01 left.

"It was a great game with two great players," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "When we went down four we kept playing, kept staying with it. Fortunately we figured out how to make Dwyane Wade miss a shot."

Speaking of great players, Michael Jordan and Pippen were together again on the United Center floor when the Bulls retired Pippen's No. 33 at halftime of their 93-80 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Pippen helped Chicago win six NBA titles by providing scoring, ballhandling, and defense at an All-Star level from the small forward spot.

"There is basically a position named after him," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "Everybody wants a Scottie Pippen-type three man. When they think of a three man, they immediately go to Pip's name. How many guys are that good that it happens that way?"

In other NBA games, it was: Philadelphia 119, Charlotte 115; New Jersey 109, Cleveland 100; Dallas 90, Memphis 83; San Antonio 101, Boston 89; Seattle 106, Utah 90; Phoenix 85, New York 81; Portland 98, New Orleans 95 in overtime; and Detroit 106, Golden State 103.

At Denver, Anthony had 16 of the Nuggets' 25 third-quarter points -- and he knew every one of them was needed since Wade was practically matching him.

"It was fun competition out there, him doing what he's doing and me doing what I'm doing," Anthony said. "At the end of the game, it's all fun and games."

It hasn't been fun lately for Miami, which hopes its struggles are about to end. Shaquille O'Neal, sidelined since spraining his ankle in the second game of the season, could be back Sunday.

"A lot of the games we've lost, we've been right in there," Wade said. "It's been down to the wire. So far, early in the season, the luck hasn't went our way. It's went the other way. Sixty-two games left. We're not down on ourselves."

After coming out flat, the Bulls rallied in the second half but could not pull ahead.

"At times, it seemed like we were playing in quicksand," Chicago guard Kirk Hinrich said. "For whatever reason, we didn't have it tonight."

Kobe Bryant scored 23 points and Lamar Odom added 19 as Los Angeles won its fourth straight.

Hinrich finished with 26 points and seven assists after missing Wednesday's victory at Orlando with a concussion.

Pistons 106, Warriors 103

Rasheed Wallace scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, Chauncey Billups had 29 points and the go-ahead basket, as visiting Detroit won its fifth straight and improved the best start in franchise history to 14-2.

Jason Richardson scored 36 points and Baron Davis had 14 points and 14 assists for Golden State.

Suns 85, Knicks 81

Steve Nash scored 19 points and Raja Bell had 17 to help host Phoenix win its NBA season-high ninth straight, moving into a tie with the Los Angeles Clippers atop the Pacific Division.

Former Suns guard Stephon Marbury topped the Knicks with 28 points.

Nets 109, Cavaliers 100

Vince Carter scored a season-high 38 points and Richard Jefferson added 18 as New Jersey won its fourth straight road game.

LeBron James scored 32 points and became the first Cleveland player to score 30 or more points in four straight games since 1981, but the Cavaliers dropped to 7-2 at home.

Mavericks 90, Grizzlies 83

At Memphis, Tenn., Dirk Nowitzki matched his season high with 35 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Dallas snapped the Grizzlies' six-game winning streak.

Marquis Daniels scored 18 points and added six assists for the Mavericks, who have won four in a row.

76ers 119, Bobcats 115

At Philadelphia, Allen Iverson scored 43 points and Kyle Korver tied a career high with 26, helping the 76ers end a four-game losing streak.

Iverson finished 15-of-32 to record the 64th 40-point game in his 10-year career.

Emeka Okafor and Kareem Rush each scored 15 points for Charlotte, which has lost six in a row.

Spurs 101, Celtics 89

Tim Duncan scored 20 points and remained unbeaten against Boston in his career as host San Antonio won its sixth straight game.

The victory was San Antonio's 17th in a row over Boston dating to January 1997, five months before Duncan was drafted by the Spurs.

Paul Pierce finished with 24 points for Boston.

SuperSonics 106, Jazz 90

Rashard Lewis scored 26 points and Reggie Evans grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds to lead visiting Seattle.

The Sonics' win was marred by forward Danny Fortson's ejection in the fourth quarter, when he had to be restrained by teammate Ray Allen, coach Bob Weiss and assistant Jack Sikma after receiving his second technical foul of the game.

Andrei Kirilenko had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, just 3-8 in the Delta Center this season.

Trail Blazers 98, Hornets 95

At Portland, Ore., reserve Juan Dixon scored a season-high 28 points and rookie Martell Webster made a go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime, helping the Blazers snap a six-game losing streak.

Speedy Claxton scored 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting and Chris Paul had 21 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Hornets.
