Hey computer peeps help me out.

Hopefully someone can help me out with either of these issues...

Comp Specs
AMD 3000+
1500MB DDR RAM (just purchased another 1GB)
9600 Bravo Edition
2 IDE Drives (80GB (system disk) and 160GB (not powering))
300GB Maxtor SATA drive (just purchased caught on fire)
Asus A8V motherboard

Basically I got home with my new stuff. I'd never installed a SATA drive before but hooked up the cables etc. All cables in good, all right, power on. Smoking... wtf? All of a sudden it burning and im pulling out cables etc.

I put out the flames quickly and it seems to be relatively ok. Obviously I'm going to take this back but I was wanting to try to get it to work as well, it doesn't look all that damaged to me, maybe its worse than it looks I don't know nothings ever started burning on me before :) So it would be cool to get an indication on how messed up its likely to be.

Second problem and by far the worse of the two... I went back to my old setup, and now when 1 of my HDDs is connected the whole thing will no longer power up. I verified it was in fact the HDD and tested cables, different power plugs etc . I then tested the HDD in another PC and the same affect, it just powers down the system as soon as you hookk it up.

Has anyone ever had this problem before the HDD is a Seagate 160GB and is less than a year old. I'm just not sure I have the reciept anymore either so who knows what I;ll do there. It certainly wasn't dmaaged by the other ones flame either, so I'm extremely stumped.... i need this one back it has all my data :(

If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated, I origionally thought power supply but its running the whole sys now without a hitch.

Sounds like the 160gb HD got too hot. Try sticking it in the freezer for a few hours and maybe you can get it to power up long enough to move your important data before it dies for good.

You're screwed! But you may try calling for a quote from a data recovery place. There are a few here in town. It can get expensive but if your data is worth it then that may be your only route.

On a side note, I don't think it's all that good of an idea to plug things in while the system is running. Especially things that may be defective. Even plugging/unplugging PS/2 mice can fry your mainboard. I've never seen a fire in a computer before, but maybe one of your power cables has a short. Check the pins on the power supply's main power connector to the MB and then the 4 pin ATX cable. Always check that any cables you're connecting to the MB are lined up with the correct pins on the MB. Otherwise you have an expensive campfire.
