I was picked last time and it was pretty cool. :nerd

Today sucked because I sat there until about 2:45 just waiting.

I almost read the entire War of the Worlds book, though. :fro

Oh, Gee!!

It's probably because you want to put everybody to death

Well I did a Mock Trial in Speech and I was apart of the Jury. It was pretty cool. I am good at getting clues to determine whether gulity or not-guilty. I was the one providing everyone with all these clues :lol they didn't really have an idea.

The last one I got picked for was a murder charge. On the second day of the trial the guy changed his plea (to guilty) and they sent us all home...but the experience was still pretty neat in a geeky kind of way. :)

Last year I was on a jury, ended up as foreman since nobody else wanted the job. I ended up persuading most of them to change their initial verdict from guilty to innocent. It was an assault with a deadly weapons charge, but the actions fit the exemption for self-defense. Fortunately, nobody got hurt in the incident.

I got called for Jury Duty but I had college the day of it so I couldn't go. I think that was when I could actually go in for Jury Duty, I just had turned 18 a few months earlier.

How can you beat $12 a day to sit and listen to testimony and look at exhibits in a commercial dispute or some sort of partnership quarrel?

Actually, I admire those who sit on juries and are willing to come back for more. I spend a goodly part of my time reading transcripts from trials and in many instances, have a hard time making it through, even while sitting in a comfortable chair with the option to go get a drink or doze off whenever I want to. I, somehow, have never served on a jury; but in the experience of reading those transcripts, I have developed a deep admiration for those who have and who take it seriously.

I also draft jury charges with some regularity and fight it out with opposing counsel about what should and should not go in a charge. Those things are intended to be easily comprehensible, but I've seen many that contain instructions that I can't understand, even with years of experience. I often wonder how I'll deal with that if I'm ever picked for a jury. Guess we'll see.

Anyway, good on you, SW for your disappointment at not getting picked. :D

I haven't been picked the last couple of times I have been summoned....I guess sometimes the lawyers don't want a Paramedic on the panel.

It's "book reading" day...

And fun to watch all the loozers scramble for excuses to get off... (I have no problem with mothers of young it's the other people making up fake shit to get off).

Now I used to work for the Federal Courts. So I would go downtown and could walk around the metal detector etc (with ID). BTW There is some nice art at the Fed Courthouse downtown feel free to come look anytime it's open to citizens. You have to pass the checkpoints of course to don't show up drunk etc lol.

My bad. I thought I heard one of our local civil district court judges talking about a $12/day stipend, but that must have been my imagination.

If you work for a decent company they cover the difference between your usual pay and the $6.

The last few companies I've worked for had jury duty bennies.

You could say that and hopefully get out of jury duty....I don't think that is something we all should do.
If I continue any further with this reply, this thread will end up moving into the politcal forum due to possible debate that quite possible would emerge from my views.... that is all...:D

I've been called 3 times and served once (Guadalupe county). The case I served on was Jerry Springer, come to life. It was a custody issue where the father only had the kid for Friday until the 3rd birthday. The kid was turning three over the weekend, so the dad thought he could just keep him for the weekend without any court action (wrong). The ex-wife's brother and the ex went to his trailer (I told you it was Springer :lol) and a melee ensued where the ex got his ear Tysoned by the brother. They were being tried separately, it was pretty cut and dried, and they were trying the ol' "blame the other one" defense. I have no idea why he didn't take a plea with the evidence that we were presented.

Just demand a trade to a different jury. Seems to be the popular thing as of late.

That's one of the key elements that makes us a civil society. A lot can happen with a trial. If you got hurt or something bad then you NEEDED a good jury then you may appreciate the system.

I agree with you there Vash. I just didn't want to start this into a political thread. I don't think we should try to get out of jury duty UNLESS you do fall into one of those categories that may be excused from duty. I was prior military, there are men and women protecting/fighting/dying for the freedroms WE ALL have thanks to The Constitution. And those same men and women are serving a purpose/role in protecting the freedoms that others have only recently been given. Those SOLDIERS,SAILORS,AIRMAN, MARINES, and you COASTIES( Coast Guard, you guys help out too.) protect our rights to have a jury of our peers judge our guilt or innocence. And for someone looking for any easy way to get out of jury duty because they think they have better things to do, just ticks me off. I think it is a slap in the face to our Service Men and Women, very disrespectful, very dishonourable. Just my opinion....which is another Freedom we have to be thankful for. * stepping off the soapbox now*
